The Front Seat

Hello!

No matter how dedicated a cycling fan you may be you probably won’t know me (yet).
My name is Alan Greencastle and I’m a 27-year old cycling fan. Until December 2013 I was a cycling fan like so many others, but then I won the lottery!

Knowing how relatively few money is actually needed to run a cycling team and with the current unemployment rates in mind I decided to quit searching for that elusive job and start my own cycling team.

As of now I have nothing except a budget that should allow me to sign about 15 riders for a CT-team on one-year contracts allowing them to better attract attention from the big teams as I highly doubt I’ll win the lottery again to be able to fund the team another year.

I guess I should also be looking around for some kind of sponsors to help with the logistics and get a proper name for the team.

I have some thoughts, but any pointers to potential partners and interesting (contract-free) youngsters will be welcome given that I'll have to start signing riders to be ready for the start of the 2014 season.

I'll share my own thoughts with you in a short while.

A very nice intro, Alan Greencastle seems like a good guy. He sounds a bit green so he might need some experienced people to help him run the team. Wink

After I read that first sentence, for some reason, I thought this would be a story about a crazy who destroyed the GC battle in a GT after running into a favourite in the mountains. Pfft

all: Wow, thanks for all the early support - I hope I'll be able to keep your interest!

admir: Thanks. A new game warrents a new story Wink

Ian: Hopefully it'll be able to stand on it's own. At least thelong term plan is different...

sgdanny: Thanks. I hope you'll feel the same way in a couple of pages time Wink

Shonak: In the fall it was my big dream that someone would win the lottery and give the needed funding to Euskaltel - most top lottery prices would have covered their budget gap Sad

sutty: Thanks. Good to see you here as well Wink

Marcovdw: Well it felt empty playing a career without a storyline so I had to

Ollfardh: Thanks!

The Rider: He is very green in deed as you will see in the upcoming bio about him!

maxime: Thanks. Gallopin is a bit out of my reach for now though, but thanks for the suggestion Smile

Martial1: Thanks, I hope it will be!

Getting Started

After all the interest my announcement have mad I figured I’d better make a proper introduction of myself.
I have been a cycling fan since as long as I can remember. I tried a bit in my young years, but never quite found the time and motivation needed to become the best on the road – and probably not the talent either…
I have previously been working in the agricultural sector in both Ireland and Denmark, but due to the bad economy in recent years I have not been able to find quite enough employment the last 1,5 years. A big problem for a lot of guys around the countryside!

So after 1,5 years of unemployment/short temporary positions I suddenly won the lottery with a ticket bought for money I found lying around on the street.

People always say that if you can’t get a job you have to make a job. I have always loved cycling and followed it closely and all the talk about the kind of money Euskaltel – Euskadi needed to keep running made me realize how cheap it can be to run a cycling team. So I figured I’d give it a go!
www.healthedeals.com/Media/Default/images/Unemployed-Insurance-COBRA-Temporary-Health-Insurance-01-20-11.jpg

Since most teams and riders have found each other already I’ll have to look to riders who, just like me, lack proper employment.
I think I will need to kind of riders:
1) Young riders on their way up towards greatness. I consider talent/skills much more important than nationality.
2) Seasoned veterans to help me and the youngster settle in the world of pro cycling. Former Euskaltel – Euskadi riders would be the obvious choice since I will be hoping to recreate the same kind of family atmosphere as they had. Also I always loved that team and it hurts me to see some of the riders left unemployed after they folded.

The list for 2) is fairly short, but suggestion for youngsters are welcome as there is so many interesting riders to pick from. Of course I have some ideas as well, but my list is not quite long enough to fill a team yet and I can’t expect everyone to take me up on my offer either…

Mühlberger is on contract with Tirol and Konrad with Gourmetfein. They have to be unemployed in this DB. I've attached my slightly edited (new teams mainly) version of Daily's latest DB should anyone be interested Wink

First Riders Signed!

Good news everyone!

Last night I sent a mail to former Euskaltel-Euskadi manager Igor Gonzales de Galdeano asking if he could supply me with some contact info for some of his old riders. Guess what – not only did he respond to me, but he even made a few calls beforehand and I am extremely proud to now be able to announce the first three riders, with a combined experience of 28 seasons on top level!

www.arueda.com/images/stories/competicion/entrevistas/2008/gorka_verdugo/verdugo_a.JPG

Gorka Verdugo (35) have been a good helper on Euskaltel-Euskadi for 10 seasons, but for us he will be in a leading role in mountainous terrain. He still haven’t actually won a race, but he has a lot of good results – especially in GC’s incl. an 11th place in Vuelta a España (’12) and a 7th place in Paris – Nice (´08).

www.orbea.com/img/blog/large/Ruben_Perez_entreno.jpg

Rubén Pérez (32) will be riding his 10th pro season with us having spent almost his entire career on Euskaltel – Euskadi. He is a strong addition on both hills and in sprints so he will have a lot to teach the young riders we hope to sign.
He only has one win on his palmares (a stage in Bayern-Rundfahrt), but has some good results in races like the vuelta a España as well.

cdn.media.cyclingnews.com//2012/09/15/1/pablo_urtasun_wins_with_sanchez_behind_600.jpg

Pablo Urtasun (33) is another hilly sprinter though better on hills and worse in sprints than Pérez. He will also be going into his 10th pro season riding for us, but has “only” spent 5 years on the Basque squad.
He has four wins in his record sheet, but has some great results in slightly hilly classics as well.

These three riders have also agreed to take on the duties of supervising the training of the youngsters to their best ability. Hopefully I’ll be able to send one of them to every race we will go to as road captains keeping things organized also in races without radios.

Hopefully these three additions will help us to attract some interesting youngsters as they will now know that they won't be completely left on their own.
