The first of two consecutive flat stages and this first as maybe the easiest day for the sprinters. No real difficulties and a flat finish with wide roads will favor even the worst climbers amongst the fast guys.
So the fastest here (Drapac) should be mentioned as the top-favorite, though he may fear the local heroes (Haedo, Haedo) as real threats. Also Schinker deserves a mention in this short preview.
Three riders went right from the start, later accompanied by another to make it a 4-men-breakaway group trying to establish a gap:
Sepulveda, Mager, Bravo and Uwizeyimana
It's still a rather high pace in the peloton as the four escapees are given a hard time to go for a bigger gap than a minute with 140km remaining.
A moment of shock for Mobil, as Ferrari hits the turf. He's brought back to the bunch by his teammates though.
It took the race a while to settle down, but it did a few kilometres later.. so the early escapees go for the break of the day.
Halfway through the race - 82km to go - the peloton starts to chase, facing a 4'45"-gap on the leading group, with teams like In'n Out, Nordeus and Bank of Ireland showing it's colors.
The breakaway reaches the two Intermediate Sprints a few minutes later and Sepulveda unsurprisingly takes both ahead of Mager and Bravo:
Sprint #1 Sepulveda Mager Bravo Sprint #2 Sepulveda Mager Bravo
Bank of Ireland and Nordeus though keep a high pace up back in the peloton and the gap is down to 2'45" with now 46km remaining.
You may also notice the bunch being stretched. Heavy crosswinds (46kmh) make for a tough day now, so every rider with ambitions has to take care of his position in the pack.
17km to go and still the same picture at the front of the peloton: Nordeus and Ireland lead the pursuit and the gap to the escapees is at less than a minute in the meantime!
10km before finish, a first group (20 riders) lost contact back in the bunch! No GC-favorite involved, most notable names might be Joeaar, pure climber Orozco or pure TT-specialists like Cruz or Oba. Joeaar though might have hoped for a decent GC-result.
Almost at the same time, the early escapees are swallowed by the peloton - so 10km before finish, the journey is over. Will we see the expected bunch sprint or will the wind favor a late solo move?
The wind keeps being a factor, but again for more riders being dropped: Bandiera can't follow anymore! Quite a surprise, as he was considered as one of the favorites for the sprints!
Also Ospina and Golas are amongst this 8 riders losing contact. Both dropped groups won't fight back their way to the front.
Where we see the first trains being built 4km before finish..
Parisien/Crespo/JJ Haedo
Di Gregoria/Butts/Rousseau/Sweeting
and in between Kasa (who might have tried to bring Schinker into position)
The Azteca-train powers into the final 3km, even establishing an 18"-gap on the bunch! Parisien obviously with great legs today, he crushes the competition so far..
And as the Canadian has done his work, there's still a huge gap between the Azteca-trio and the following bunch sprint, which kicked off in the meantime! Let's have a look at who's in the mix there:
Still Butts/Sweeting (with Rousseau now falling behind), now with LS Haedo and Dupont head-to-head!
A few metres behind Drapac, Schinker and Kulhavy.
Paulinho/Araujo, Hawkins a bit behind..
JJ Haedp won't give a damn and leaves Crespo's slipstream with still a comfortable gap on the bunch..
..where Dupont opened up a small advantage on Sweeting, while Drapac moved forward in the meantime. LS Haedo though seems to suffer and loses ground.
But it ain't about winning for those guys anyway, as Azteca simply dominated this "bunch" sprint to complete a 1-2-3 in San Luis' opening stage! Local hero JJ Haedo takes out the first stage and slips into the leader-shirt for tomorrow!
The best news for the other sprint-contenders may be that there's no gap rewarded for the trio (as Parsien suffered from his effort to somehow close this gap):
Dupont lungs in for 4th ahead of top-favorite Drapac and his strong finishing teammate Hawkins. LS Haedo hangs on for 7th, while riders like Sweeting (9th), Schinker (13th) or also Vitoria (23rd) couldn't do anything special today.
