Middle East Tour Stage 1
mb2612
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/b077e005-90be-4d7b-9a26-bcf92bdd07b9_zpscc8d7c6f.jpg
Stage 1 dawns bright and sunny for the first, hilly, stage of the race. The inital route is flat, with just three sprint points to liven up the breaks afternoon. Then comes thre climbs in the closing 25km, with the final one topping out only 5km from the finish. The favourites for today are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Iglinksi, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Martinez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Pozdnyakov.

It's a nervous start, with the bunch pulling back the first few breakaway attempts.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0009_zps2f9c60f8.jpg

However, by the first sprint 3 riders have established themselves: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Athanasiades and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Passeron. Iglinski clearly doesn't want to put too much pressure on his team too early.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0011_zps2973b656.jpg

The order is the same at the second sprint, Kragh Andersen is comfortably the quickest of the three riders.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0012_zps37f1f5ec.jpg

And again, the third sprint finishes much like the first two. The break's lead is now down to 3 minutes with 30km to go. Passeron may not be much of a sprinter, but he is decent over the hills, and his job will be to ensure Maloja don't have to work for as long as possible.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0014_zpse757fed7.jpg

As the peloton enter the rolling terrain the gap has grown by another 30 seconds. Nordeus are being forced to do all the work.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0015_zps8e6d0a3b.jpg

The peloton hit the top of the first climb with 23 km to go and the gap holding steady at three minutes. Siam Cement have started to help Nordeus, but the pace still isn't enough for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Moinard and he throws in an early attack.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0016_zpsc388d93c.jpg

Eustalkel clearly have some sort of plan, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png R. Fernandez goes after Moinard.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0017_zps2faf738f.jpg

All Fernandez manages to do is neutralise Moinards attack, so now i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Zoidl tries his luck on the descent.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0018_zps840f5c48.jpg

Through 20km to go, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Milan and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Jumabekov try to go after him.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0019_zps3366ac9d.jpg

Nordeus and Siam Cement pull it all back together again though.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0020_zpsbc93260e.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Zoidl still thinks his best shot is in an early break so he attacks again.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0021_zps11c69ac8.jpg

The break are still working well together, and now with just 14km to go they hit the base of the days toughest climb. The gap is staying solid at 2'30". The peloton really need to gun it if they want to catch these guys.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0022_zps948ef2ae.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Athanasiades decides that their gap is big enough, and tries to leave his companions behind.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0023_zps13cd30ba.jpg

While at the base of the climb Zoidl is brought back for a second time, having done plenty of work solo on the flat.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0024_zps843b58bb.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Passeron has sat on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Kragh Andersen's wheel, watching i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Athanasiades build a thirty second advantage, but now he is forced to go after the Cypriot.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0025_zps15fe6ab7.jpg

As the break finally come into sight for the peloton, the gap at just 2'14", Zoidl and Moinard try to attack again.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0026_zpsc64987c6.jpg

With 1 km to the top Passeron has clawed his way back to Athanasiades' wheel.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0027_zpsf484585a.jpg

Moinard and Zoidl have a small gap, but this whole race seems to be coming back together.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0028_zpsaa005af6.jpg

Passeron is content to let Athanasiades lead over the top of the climb, and claim tomorrow's mountain jersey.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0029_zpsed62ce09.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Kragh Andersen comes over in third at +32"
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0030_zps8ee312c2.jpg

Then Moinard at +52", 10 seconds ahead of Zoidl.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0031_zpsb6d605a8.jpg

The peoloton is at 1'16" still being led by Nordeus. There are less than ten 10km to go, so it will all come down to the final climb.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0032_zps2b5a9f7d.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Kasa is flying down the descent, he's pulled back Zoidl and kept the peloton incredibly stung out. No big names have been dropped yet, but some gaps could easily appear, and plenty of pure climbers are further back than they should be.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0033_zps1efbb66a.jpg

As we say that 18 men go clear of the pack. Nordeus' work is paying off finally.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0034_zps4c35e86c.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Moinard has now caught i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, he's still 50 seconds behind the two leaders though.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0035_zpsd44d44a0.jpg

Luckily for everyone else i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Ringheim closes the gap to the Nordeus group as soon as the road straightens out.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0036_zps902ce8ea.jpg

Just 5km to go for our leaders, and Passeron is making Athanasiades do all the work.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0037_zpsdefabb12.jpg

Both i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Moinard and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Kasa are closing though. Will this come down to a bunch sprint, or will [PBD] Athanasiades pull i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Passeron to victory.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0038_zps9a06629c.jpg

Athanasiades is running out of steam, as is Kasa, but Siam Cement can replace Kasa with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Wu. If Passeron wants to win, he needs to help out.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0039_zps38bfc81f.jpg

With 2.5km to go Moinard has made the juncture. Passeron now has to win the sprint, or he will have handed Iglinski's rival 20 bonus seconds.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0040_zps3a6fd869.jpg

The peloton start to sprint, Pozdnyakov is in 5th place and should be the quickest over this final 2.5km
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0041_zps58c311db.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Moinard is pushing on at the front.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0042_zps9383be83.jpg

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Pozdnyakov is already across the gap, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodrigues is in his slipstream.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0043_zpse6c2323c.jpg

As i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Pozdnyakov pulls past i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Passeron, the Frenchman is surely thinking of the victory he gave up for his captain.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0044_zpsc88d698b.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodriguez is now trying to come past i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Pozdnyakov.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0045_zps687eb84d.jpg

Moinard is still just about holding onto his lead.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0046_zps427216d9.jpg

As i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Pozdnyakov and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodrigues are neck and neck trying to catch Moinard, a certain young German i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png is moving fastest of all.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0047_zps3caa480e.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Pozdnyakov looks to have seen off a now fading Rodrigues, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Moinard still has the lead, but look at i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Herklotz move.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0048_zps45d889bc.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Pozdnyakov has moved into the lead, but not for long.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0049_zpscb662ea7.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Herklotz flies past him, as Iglinski moves into 5th place.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0050_zps21f66b7a.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Iglinski weaves into third.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0051_zpscda8225d.jpg

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Hertlotz takes a shock victory to take the first yellow jersey of the race.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0052_zps07ca790e.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Iglinski justifies his team tactics with his second place, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Pozdnyakov should be kicking himself for sprinting too early, and hence just getting third. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodrigues and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Martinez round out the top 5.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0053_zps7d642fbe.jpg

i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/TME1-3/PCM0054_zps03feede1.jpg
More worrying for plenty of riders is the gap that opened after the 22 rider crossed the line. No one wants to lose a minute here stupidly, and luckily for them, the commissars allow the first 83 riders to be given the same time. This also allows Kragh Andersen to claim second overall, thanks to his bonus seconds.
