4th stage of ToSA 2014 should be definitely the one that makes the gaps. The profile is just made for some GC action and I am sure some of the guys will find the way to change the current GC. 6,5 laps around Silvermine Loops with some serious climbs and hills. Very, very interesting. Anyways, nothing to wait for, so let's just start!
No one really had any doubt about the breakaway on this kind of profile, so as the race started, we saw few guys attacking. Chaves, current KoM leader Santambrogio, Konte, Gerrans and Eibegger were there. All of them are really good on hills and mountains, so this should make one really strong break group.
They had a pretty good tactic, as each one of them won at least one KoM checkpoint, which was great for Santambrogio who almost secured his KoM now. That was a co-operation!
Riders of Karcher Adira were really active today. It can't be anything else but McEvoy feeling good. As a team with yellow jersey, Gazelle also helped alot.
Riders in front got huge advantage and the pace in peloton started getting really high. Shusehoin, the Kazzinc leader here was the guy who had a flat in probably worst moment, just when the pace was abnormally high, at around 60 kilometers to go. There was no way back for him and GC story is over for him now.
42 kilometers to go, the riders already passed 5,5 of 6 laps and the situation is now getting more and more interesting. Few really strong guys attacking now. Hatanka, Konovalovas and Weening. They can make serious problems if peloton lets them go now and it looks they're doing it!
10 kilometers after, on the final climb, after the riders that attacked previously already gone, few leaders attack aswell! Ben Nasser, Skujins, Oss, Monfort, Gautier were all there.
They easily got some acceleration and quickly caught Hatanka, Konovalovas and Weening, as well as the first guy that dropped from break, Santambrogio.
Back behind, it's getting faster and faster. Riders who missed to attack, Bobridge, Bellis Zaini and Vastaranta on the top are now setting some deadly pace. Not a day for weak guys, definitely!
However, on the top of the climb and at the end of 5th lap, something that everyone expected happened. Oss couldn't really keep the pace of race favourites and are slightly dropping. Luckily, there's huge downhill after this for him to recover, but there's a bit question mark if he can keep the jersey after this stage.
The last lap and final 20 kilometers starts! This is the current situation on the field:
Break group Group 2 (+25) Group 3(+20) Group 4(+33) Konte Ben Nasser Bellis Roy Gerrans Skujins Bobridge Dowsett Chaves Monfort Zaini Eiggeberg Gautier Vastaranta ... ... ...
2nd group has a great co-operation. All of the guys are going on their turns and it looks like they're unstoppable now.
Big problem for 3rd group. Bobridge and Bellis has to do all the work, as all the other riders are exhausted. However, this tires them even more and probably gets them out of the winning gamble.
How sad for Roy and Dowsett. They're in pretty bad form here and looks totally uninterested. Brit makes a move tho and is now trying to get 3rd group, while Roy just seats and makes this race even worse for his team. Such a shame.
Konte attacks and 10 kilometers to go, he's in absolute lead here. Few groups are behind him tho, his chances are not so high, but at least he's showing some great form.
In about the same time Bobridge and Vastaranta attacks and joins the 2nd group. They're tired, but at least they're now with favourites which should motivate them more. Bellis and Dowsett are still behind.
5 kilometers to go and first group is now looking stronger than ever. All the favourites, including Ben Nasser, Skujins, Monfort are on the top of the group. Hatanka, Konovalovas and Weening, as well as few other guys are still in that group. They now caught Konte and are first group. This is current situation on the field.
Break group Group 2 (+17) Group 3(+50) Ben Nasser Bellis Dowsett Skujins Oss Roy Gautier McEvoy Lloyd Bobridge Kelderman Monfort Vastaranta Hategeka Konovalovas... ... ...
Konovalovas finds some energy and he's now trying to attack! However, guys behind reacts quickly and catches that. It's really, really heating up at the moment and the race winner is probably going to be decided now.
As expected, favourites really needed to get ride of the guys behind. 3,5 kilometers to go, and Ben Nasser, Skujins Gautier and Bobridge attacks! Bobridge is the first one to sit. Looks like his previous attacks and relays took off some of his energy. Monfort is still sitting there behind. He must have some master plan to stop this, seriously.
Hatanaka is the next one to react and attack. Pretty surprising to see him fresh and some of the race favourites and leaders struggling behind.
Anyways, first group now enters last 3 kilometers, the banner zone. Bobridge is more and more behind, as the 3 guys in front are co-operating and setting up some really nice pace.
Monfort behind is out of his seat, also. It looks like he's attacking there! His move is followed by Zaini.
Meanwhile, Bellis recovered and is now getting close to Group 2. I am afraid that it's too late now.
2 kilometers to go and this is the situation on the road - Ben Nasser, Skujins and Gautier are on the top of the race. Bobridge is struggling alot, but he's still there. Down the road, we can see Hatanaka on 5th, Monfort and Zaini on 6th and 7th provisional. Rest of the group is still compact. Looks like they're planning to finish together.
1 kilometer to go and riders in front starts their sprint. Ben Nasser is on the top of that group and he's the guy with highest SP here. Can he get it, or Skujins and Gautier or even Bobridge are going to make some surprise?
Only few hundred of meters left, the order is still the same. Everyone looks like they're going on same tempo and rhytm. Is this the win for Ben Nasser? Can Tunisian prove himself after being signed this transfer season by Kenya? It's all to be answered in next few seconds.
And at the end, totally yes! What a great win by Ben Nasser who even created some gap on Gautier who finished on 2nd, Skujins who finished on 3rd and finally unlucky Bobridge on 4th.
A minute after Hatanaka finishes as 5th, in front Monfort and Zaini who finished as 6th and 7th today. Pretty solid result for some of these guys.
Konovalovas is the next one to finish, as he've beaten Hategeka and McEvoy in that sprint. Kelderman finishes few seconds behind, as well as Bellis. Not a good result for 2011 winner.
Roy and Dowsett are definitely losers of the day, as they finishes on 21th and 25th positions, more than 4 minutes behind.
That was all for 4th stage of Tour of South Africa 2014! See ya next time.
