After 2 very interestint, to say the least, stages behind us, we're now in front of 3rd stage of Tour of South Africa, the 2nd one rated as "flat". 3 circuits around Woodside and finish on little hill, which should, but doesn't mean it have to make a problem to some classic sprinters. There may be few attacks aswell, as this is definitely all but pan flat terrain.
The first breakaway group was created pretty early and it was a strong one! Sambris, Rodriguez, Eiberg, Ngock Ngue, Hung and Lahsiani were all there. They got the points from the first KoM checkpoint and it looked like this:
KoM 1 1. Lahsiani 2. Sambris 3. Rodriguez
However, teams that didn't have their guy in front, especially Karcher Adira couldn't just let that go. After 20 kilometers of chasing, they caught this pretty strong breakaway group.
Sambris however decided to play with luck a bit and made a move once again. No one decided to follow him, so peloton let him make the breakaway "group".
As that was normal, Sambris basically won next 2 KoMs and Sprints without even sweating. There was some action behind for KoM points, actually.
KoM 2 1. Sambris 2. Pirazzi 3. Sakalou
There were only 3 teams chasing Sambris today, but it was reasonable. No one wanted to help Team Gazelle as they do have a race leader and Monfort here. Allianz and Kazzinc were chasing there, also.
Sprint 2 finished with Sambris winning it and few guys from peloton taking 2nd and 3rd.
Sprint 2 1. Sambris 2. Siskevicius 3. Minnard
In the meantime in peloton, few favourites placed an attack around 60 kilometers to go. Konovalovas, Bobridge, Skujins and Oss were there, but that was easily caught by Allianz and Kazzinc . These guys are betting high on final sprint finish, it seems.
The riders were in front of last KoM and Sambris couldn't keep the pace and stay in front of the peloton, so he drops.
But then, once again, sneaky move. Monfort is making a move! Bobridge and Ben Nasser are trying to follow that. It's heating up!
To make thing even worse for peloton, Jonathan Bellis attacks only few seconds after previous three guys.
These 4 guys decided to co-operate and created a group in front. 8 kilometers to go and they're only 20 seconds in front of the peloton, but as they're very strong, everything can happen. Kazzinc is giving their all to catch that, from behind.
Riders in front passes the 5 kilometer banner and they still do have few seconds of advantage, but it's melting away. However, teams on the front of the group, mainly Kazzinc are exhausting their leaders, Mezgec in this situation. It can be two edged sword for them.
Despite the fact that they still didn't catch the riders in front, peloton sprinters makes the first train. It's not one team's train, but more something mix. Siskevicius and Lee are in front of Mezgec and clearly setting up a sprint for him. McEvoy is securing the position of Davis, while Haussler and Gatto are on their wheels. Skujins, Oss, Proni, Mandri and Frohlinger are also there, just behind.
3 kilometers to go and thanks to great pace of Kazzinc's guys, 4 riders that were in break were caught. They're now trying to stick up in that mini-group and maybe do something at the end.
And now, this is the situation from a helicopter camera. Siskevicius done his job and sprint officially starts. 2 kilometers to go.
McEvoy Lee Ben Nasser Davis Mezgec Bellis Gatto Haussler Bobridge Oss Monfort Richeze Skujins
Vastaranta and Proni are there also, but they finished out of this image, unfortunately.
1 kilometer to go and McEvoy is the first one to start sprinting. This is an unbeliavable acceleration, everyone's struggling to catch that, even their main sprinter, Davis!
Riders behind now passes under that 1km to go banner and Davis / Mezgec duo is now on the top of that group.
There are few favourites stucked from 13th position and behind. Hoffman, Felline, Konte are just some of the names.
What's happening here? McEvoy is getting even bigger advantage. Seems that his all-around abilities finally pays of, as there are only few hundred of meters and he just can't lose this now.
Riders behind are fighting for the podium. Davis , Mezgec, Haussler are are all on very top. Meanwhile, Oss and Bellis are seriously accelerating from behind. 500 meters to go for them. Vastaranta and Mezgec are seriously loosing the speed now.
Nothing new in fight for Top 10 behind, as Hoffman, Felline, Ben Nasser, Monfort, Skujins are still there.
Last 100 meters for the guys on top and Oss is having his own show. The guy accelerates abnormally and manages to get on the top of that "mini-group", just behind McEvoy. But can he now overtake him?
At the end, it looked like no! McEvoy concentrated on final few meters of sprint instead of celebrating and that was definitely smart decision. Great win for brit! He finishes in front of Oss on 2nd and Bellis on 3rd.
Unbeliavably bad race for Mezgec, who finished on very bad 15th place, after having such a great leadout. Seems like the high pace of his team killed him.
Only 87 guys finished in peloton today. These bumpy hills are definitely making huge problems to some teams, especially Hornbach, who are having some serious problems here in this race.
That was finish of Stage 3 - Tour of South Africa 2014 edition.
