Down to 2 stages left. Today features 191kms of difficult hills and an uphill finish into Seraing. Lebris is holding the jersey over Sweeting and all the punchuers looking to gain some time back today.
Or at least get a stage win, the favourites are marked as:
Gaimon, Bugge, Kolobnev, Wyss, and Jumabekov.
That's enough for our pre-race coverage, let's get to the racing!
Some new faces start the attacks 4kms in.
Esmaeli (+7'53")
Stevenson (+7'53")
Both can hold their own on the hills and Stevenson can sprint a little as well. A rather dangerous duo.
2kms later and they are join by 2 more riders:
Alaphilippe (+13'27") and Bissinger (+20'42").
Both of them have very similar skill sets to Esmaeli and Stevenson.
5 more riders now want in on this morning breakaway.
Passeron (+11'06")
Bajadali (+16'31")
Tatarinov (+14'53")
Barta (+9'40")
Matteau (+7'53")
Surely the peloton can't let this strong group of 9 go away.
They put up a good fight but with 164kms to go they are caught by Team TomTom looking after Lebris.
Shortly after being caught this group of 4 gets away.
Bissinger
Bajadali
N. Van der Ploeg (+11'06")
Rosseler (+4'17")
2 returning faces and 2 new faces. Rosseler is rather interesting because of his good ride yesterday and with more cobbles to follow tomorrow. But, I guess he wants to try his chances today.
As they take in the view with 150kms to go we can now confirm they are our breakaway of the day with over 2 minutes ahead of the peloton.
50kms later and 100kms to go their lead has grown out to 7'45" as we race through the countryside. Team TomTom doesn't seem worried at all yet.
82kms to go and a flat for Renshaw. Not the best time as the peloton has just started to chase for real. It's going to be struggle for him to get back with no help from his teammates.
50kms to go and the breakaway's lead has been cut to 4 minutes by the help of Team Vontobel on the front with Team TomTom.
Renshaw can say his goodbyes to the peloton as riders (mostly the pure sprinters) are getting thrown off the back to join him for a casual ride to the finish.
39 riders are dropped by the fast pace being set by Team Vontobel.
Notable names include:
Wu (KoM Co-Leader)
Van Wyk (10th Overall)
Takenouchi (11th Overall)
Farrar (16th Overall)
Caethoven (20th Overall)
De Haes (37th Overall)
Tronet (38th Overall)
Bugge (Stage Race Favourite)
A few minutes later 4 more riders join them.
Leemoine (42th Overall)
Van der Ploeg (58th Overall)
Dupont (8th Overall)
Averin (25th Overall)
78 riders now remain in the peloton with 35kms to go. The breakaway still holds a very slim 1'45" advantage.
30kms to go and major mistake made by Team TomTom. They pushed the tempo so fast that they dropped the yellow jersey of Lebris! Now they all drop back to this latest group of riders dropped to protect him. Other names in this 30 rider group include:
Hamilton, Sobal, Harrison
Duque
Aulas (4th Overall), Paiani (9th Overall)
Joseph
Howes
Sutton (7th Overall)
Wow, Team TomTom makes up for their mistake by pulling the group back together with the lead chase group.
In all this confusion 3 riders attack away from the lead chase group:
Malle (47th Overall - +7'51")
Jones (137th Overall - +23'42")
Fahnert (28th Overall - +4'06")
26kms to go.
Their move is brought back quickly though, and they also bring back Bajadali and Rosseler from the morning breakaway.
That leaves...
Only Van der Ploeg and Bissinger up front.
But as you can see Van der Ploeg is on the attack with 17kms to go and going up the final incline before the one leading up to the finish.
Near the top of the hill a huge move by Wyss (5th Overall - +1'20")!
Bole (12th Overall - +3'38") is trying to counter.
Bole is joined by
Selander (6th Overall - +1'28")
Jelloul (26th Overall - +4'06")
Kolobnev (119th Overall - +17'30")
De Ketele (39th Overall - +4'06")
They hope to chase down Wyss who just shot out like a cannon ball.
5kms to go! All eyes are still on Van der Ploeg. Can he continue Eddie Stobart fantastic start to the season?
Behind the situation on the road looks like this:
+43" - Bissinger and Wyss
+1'29" - Bole, Selander, Jelloul, Kolobnev, and De Ketele
+24" - 69 Rider Peloton ( Lebris)
The peloton picks up the Bole group, but not Selander as he puts in another dig.
The peloton hits the final climb with 2.2kms to go and Jovanovic (77th Overall - +10'43") attacks. Looks like Bole has thrown in the towel.
... someone is approaching the 1km to go banner! Back to the front.
Van der Ploeg is just peddling away, showing very little signs of fatigue at the moment. Something must be in the water at Eddie Stobart Pro Cycling because they are looking at another win.
Wait I might have spoke to soon. Wyss is powering across the gap after dropping the persistent Bissinger off his back wheel.
Another solo attack out of the peloton: Schoffmann (84th Overall - +11'06")
But everybody is watching the chase at that front. Can Van der Ploeg hold off the charging Wyss?
Yes! Rack it up. It's another win for Eddie Stobart Pro Cycling. This time from Neil Van der Ploeg.
28 seconds later comes Wyss for 2nd. He needs over a minute to claim the yellow jersey.
A few seconds later comes Bissinger for a podium finish after a long day in the morning breakaway. Great result for him.
The peloton is under the banner.
Selander and Jovanovic have a small gap over Schoffmann and
Kolobnev.
Then it's the peloton with Millan, Fahnert, Cioban, and Bole leading them to the line.
Selander 4th, Jovanovic 5th, and Kolobnev 6th.
18 second gap back to Schoffmann just holding onto 7th in front of
Gaimon, Appleby, and Schuler.
But everyone is most curious about the time gap from this group to Wyss and who will get to wear yellow on the final cobble stage.
But first, give credit were credit is due as Team TomTom recovered from their early mistake to drag Lebris to the line in the main group. Hats off to them.
But, the gap was just big enough! Wyss moves into the jersey by 32 seconds over Lebris.
Sweeting retains the green jersey as Bole dropped off at the end to finish 27th. Joseph and Wu still share the KoM prize with no checkpoints remaining in that competition. Harrison is holding off Cioban,
Pranata, and Schoonbroodt as best young rider. And finally,
In-n-Out Racing Powered by Auchan is running away with the team competition.
That about does it here for stage 5. Just one more stage to go.
