The final flat stage of the tour is pan flat and at 192kms.
The sun is back but the storm-like winds are still swirling around the area.
The favourites are marked as Farrar, Drapac, and Sutton.
Interesting to see the top stage favourite is on the same team (Azteca - NBCSN) as the yellow jersey holder Duque. Who is the team going to ride for?
Reaching the 1st sprint point a breakaway of 5 holds a 40 second gap.
They cross over the line in this order:
Sanikwathi (+20")
Verhelst (+20")
Wu (+14")
Mundle (+6'09")
Mortensen (+3'13")
The peloton lets off the gas and this becomes our breakaway of the day.
Azteca - NBCSN is in charge of the pace making. There are given some help from Fletcher - Garneau and Risa - Ergon from time to time.
So far a simple and relaxing race 50kms in.
It continues to stay that way as the breakaway reaches the 2nd sprint point 70kms out from the finish. This time it's Wu over Sanikwathi.
Verhelst takes 3rd.
Their lead is already down to 3'45". It's not looking very good for them.
Moving onto the final sprint point:
Sanikwathi, Wu, and then Verhelst.
Now everyone's focus is on the finish, 37kms away. The breakaway is holding onto a slim 2 minute advantage.
Mundle goes solo with 20kms left. With the peloton going full throttle and only a minute back, this looks like a wasted effort.
The other 4 breakaway riders are caught with 14kms to go. Mundle does well to keep his advantage at slightly over a minute.
Just when we thought we would get a normal stage crosswinds pull the peloton apart. 83 riders are able to stay in the front group. Key names behind are:
Stuyven
Richeze
Uugunbayar
Rasmussen
Joseph
Renshaw
Ostergaard
Rosseler
Kolobnev
Avery
Takenounchi
Duggan
Lemoine
Stevenson
Howes
With the split happening at 11kms it looks unlikely for them to rejoin.
Back at the front of the race Mundle is caught just past the 10kms to go banner.
More and more riders are getting thrown off the back. The latest causalities are: Dahlberg, Veilleux, Wu, Bugge, and Matzka.
It's certain now, anybody that is getting dropped is going to lose time.
Just past 5kms to go and the first sprint train forms.
Horton
Barclay
Drapac
Bole jumps on Drapac's wheel wearing the jersey.
Horton pulls off with 3.2kms to go. Behind Bole more teams are getting organized.
Jorgensen leading out Sutton.
Gene and Millan leading out Farrar.
Behind them looking for a train to follow are:
Iglinski
Aulas
Stroetinga
Jelloul
Gaimon
Sweeting
Tronet
Meenhorst
and... Duque.
2.5kms to go and Risa - Ergon's train goes to the lead. Also Iglinski cuts right into Farrar and bumps him off Millan's wheel.
Jorgensen is powering away from the field for Sutton! Everyone else has now abandoned their trains to chase down Risa.
Sutton goes with 1,500 meters left. And it's Millan not Farrar giving chase on the far side. Farrar has lost all momentum after being cut off.
Under the banner! Both Sutton and Millan have hit the wall. They have gone too soon, can they hold on or will somebody steal it from them?
Bole, Tronet, Meenhorst, and Sweeting are closing fast.
This going to be close...
Iglinski, Jelloul, and Friedman with a late push for the line.
Sutton can't look over his shoulder now.
Bole to the lead! Sweeting and Iglinski are right there as well.
Sweeting moves alongside Bole. 200 meters to the line!
Robert Sweeting takes it on the line!
What a fantastic finish. Bole takes 2nd, Iglinski, Tronet, and
Friedman get around Sutton to make the top 5.
The rest of the top 10 finishes out with Stroetinga, Jelloul, Aulas, and Gaimon.
Crosswinds are going to be the major story of the day as it takes one last victim right before the finish line: Dabrowski.
This race is seriously up for grabs as we head out to tackle the cobbles for the 1st time tomorrow. And with bonus seconds gained today, Sweeting is the next wearer of the . Just barely taking it away from Bole (+4"),
Iglinkski (+4") and Duque (+12").
