Welcome to the 2nd stage of the Benelux Challenge. We are starting in Eschweiler, Luxembourg and traveling 176.5kms out to Diekirch, Luxembourg with a bunch of hills across the way.
After the surprise win on stage 1, Duque gets to wear .
The favourites to win today's stage and try to take yellow away from him are:
Kolobnev, Bole, Wyss, Gaimon, and Bugge.
The riders are ready, let's head out to the road. Enjoy today's coverage...
Because the cyclist sure won't. Rain, rain, go away.
Wu gets the morning attacks started 2kms in.
But a whole host of riders jump across and the peloton does like that, so
we are back to square one. The next to try is...
Howes. He is followed by Joseph, and Wu.
Just when it looked like the gone from the peloton with a 1'25" gap, Rosseler attacks.
But the peloton is having none of that. And quickly reels Rosseler back in.
No more attacks after that which means the group of 3 is your breakaway of the day. With 7 cat. 1 climbs coming, 1 of them is going to take away the from Stuyven.
The best climber in the group, Howes and he has no problems winning the first climb.
Avery and Stuyven come out the peloton to pick up a few points. Can Stuyven pick up enough points this way to save his KoM jersey?
Maybe? Howes mistimes the 2nd climb allowing Wu and Joseph to go past him.
3rd climb: 1st Wu / 2nd Joseph / 3rd Howes.
The American is making a mess of this. The current KoM standings look like:
1st Joseph (40)
2nd Wu (38)
3rd Howes (36)
4th Stuyven (30)
So, looks like the KoM jersey will be shifting hands. But to who?
With 79kms to go there are still 4 cat. 1 climbs to come.
Well, maybe there won't be a new leader... Stuyven decides not to return to peloton right away after attack after the points. Is he going to try and go solo to catch the breakaway, who are 3'20" up the road!
As Stuyven rides into between the peloton and breakaway we get to the 4th climb. Howes is completed gassed already. Updated KoM Standings:
1st Wu (54)
2nd Joseph (52)
3rd Howes (46)
53kms to go and the rain takes it's first victim: Scarponi.
A few kilometers later Stuyven is brought back to the peloton by Azteca - NBCSN doing all the work for Duque.
That brings us to the 5th climb. Wu just can't beat now. 48kms to go, the breakaway hold a slim 3 minute advantage.
In what could be a brilliant tactic move, Edmondson uses the 5th climb to make his move. He has Stuyven with him.
Team Nordeus sends men to the front recognizing this as a dangerous move. But the duo quickly pulls out a 40 second gap.
The rain and slippery roads take victim #2: Quintana. With 40kms to go he isn't going to be able to make it back as the peloton is at a quick tempo now. He joins riders already slipping off the back of the peloton.
Azteca - NBCSN puts the hammer down even further and drags back
Edmondson and Stuyven with 34kms to go.
The breakaway riders must be extremely tired because nobody even attempts to attack for the KoM points on the 6th cat. climb with 27kms to go.
Victim #3... Farabaugh. Surprising not to see a huge wreck yet, but just single individual ones... wait... hope I didn't just jinx it...
Back to the front of the race, 22kms to go. Huge attack by Dabrowski. Breakaway is still 1'20" up the road.
Edmondson joins him. We are also getting word Bugge has been dropped by the peloton. He and his team manager are going to want to forget about this race as soon as possible.
More attacks! This time Fahnert and stage favourite Kolobnev.
But those 4 can't work together in the peloton brings it all back, so Kolobnev goes again. 16kms to go.
Kolobnev catches the morning breakaway. A chase group of 3 has formed behind him. Fonte, Fahnert, and Cioban.
With the breakaway caught they will not get a chance to challenge for the final cat. climb. So, who wins the King of Mountains competition because there are no more cat. climbs in the rest of the tour?
Joseph and Wu. They both finish on 80 points, we get a joint winner. Unless of course one of them is unable to finish the remaining 4 stages. Which I guess is possible with cobbles waiting.
The attackers come together and stop working! So, the peloton wipes them all out! Back to square one once again. 11kms to go.
It's Cioban that makes the next move with 8kms to go, attacking up the last categorized climb. Behind him are Fahnert, Fonte, and Passalacqua.
5kms to go. Behind Cioban there are now 3 groups of 3 riders each.
Wyss
Fonte
Passalacqua
Fahnert
Bole
Selander
Firsanov
Gaimon
Appleby
Then the peloton with still 124 riders.
The 2nd group catches the first chase group but then sit around and look at each other so the 3rd group catches them and then the peloton... wow.
Cioban is now your lone leader.
However, the sprint opens up and Cioban doesn't realize it. Wyss and Passalacqua get good jumps but did they go to early?
Yes, here comes everyone else now at full speed! This is anyone's victory now.
Out of nowhere Sweeting storms to the lead. One of the few sprinters that survived the hills. He is getting challenged by Barta, Iglinski, and his teammate Aulas.
Iglinski to the lead! Bole finishing fast as well, he could be looking at the yellow jersey.
Iglinski takes a peek and...
Celebrates because the victory is his!
Behind riders are all over the place as those that were at the front with 700 meters to go were being overtake by the sprinters that timed their finishes better. The rest of top 5 ended by being Sweeting, Bole, Hamilton, and Duque.
The top 10 includes a whole host of new names that stayed out of harms way and timed their sprint well: Selander, Schoonbroodt, Zamri Salleh, Velits, and Barta.
Duque keeps the overall lead but Iglinski is on the same time and Bole is in 3rd just 4 seconds back.
Numerous riders finished behind in the fast wet race. Mostly sprinters but a few cobblers slipped through the cracks. On the positive, no abandons even after having 3 brutal crashes today.
That will do for stage 2, thanks for watching.
Hopefully the weather will clearly up for tomorrow's stage.
