Benelux Challenge - Stage 2
Mresuperstar
i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/Profile.jpg

Welcome to the 2nd stage of the Benelux Challenge. We are starting in Eschweiler, Luxembourg and traveling 176.5kms out to Diekirch, Luxembourg with a bunch of hills across the way.

After the surprise win on stage 1, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Duque gets to wear i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/yellow_zps6c2eea76.png.

The favourites to win today's stage and try to take yellow away from him are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Kolobnev, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Bole, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Wyss, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Gaimon, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Bugge.

The riders are ready, let's head out to the road. Enjoy today's coverage...

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/1.jpg

Because the cyclist sure won't. Rain, rain, go away.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/2.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Wu gets the morning attacks started 2kms in.

But a whole host of riders jump across and the peloton does like that, so
we are back to square one. The next to try is...

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/3.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Howes. He is followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Joseph, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Wu.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/4.jpg

Just when it looked like the gone from the peloton with a 1'25" gap, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Rosseler attacks.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/5.jpg

But the peloton is having none of that. And quickly reels i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Rosseler back in.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/6.jpg

No more attacks after that which means the group of 3 is your breakaway of the day. With 7 cat. 1 climbs coming, 1 of them is going to take away the i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/kom_zps3cc10dba.png from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Stuyven.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/7.jpg

The best climber in the group, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Howes and he has no problems winning the first climb.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/8.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Avery and i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/kom_zps3cc10dba.png Stuyven come out the peloton to pick up a few points. Can i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/kom_zps3cc10dba.png Stuyven pick up enough points this way to save his KoM jersey?

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/9.jpg

Maybe? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Howes mistimes the 2nd climb allowing i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Wu and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Joseph to go past him.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/10.jpg

3rd climb: 1st i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Wu / 2nd i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Joseph / 3rd i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Howes.

The American is making a mess of this. The current KoM standings look like:
1st i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Joseph (40)
2nd i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Wu (38)
3rd i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Howes (36)
4th i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/kom_zps3cc10dba.png Stuyven (30)

So, looks like the KoM jersey will be shifting hands. But to who?
With 79kms to go there are still 4 cat. 1 climbs to come.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/11.jpg

Well, maybe there won't be a new leader... i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/kom_zps3cc10dba.png Stuyven decides not to return to peloton right away after attack after the points. Is he going to try and go solo to catch the breakaway, who are 3'20" up the road!

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/12.jpg

As i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/kom_zps3cc10dba.png Stuyven rides into between the peloton and breakaway we get to the 4th climb. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Howes is completed gassed already. Updated KoM Standings:
1st i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Wu (54)
2nd i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Joseph (52)
3rd i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Howes (46)

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/13.jpg

53kms to go and the rain takes it's first victim: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Scarponi.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/14.jpg

A few kilometers later i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/kom_zps3cc10dba.png Stuyven is brought back to the peloton by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Azteca - NBCSN doing all the work for i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/yellow_zps6c2eea76.png Duque.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/15.jpg

That brings us to the 5th climb. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Wu just can't beat now. 48kms to go, the breakaway hold a slim 3 minute advantage.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/16.jpg

In what could be a brilliant tactic move, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Edmondson uses the 5th climb to make his move. He has i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/kom_zps3cc10dba.png Stuyven with him.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Team Nordeus sends men to the front recognizing this as a dangerous move. But the duo quickly pulls out a 40 second gap.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/17.jpg

The rain and slippery roads take victim #2: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Quintana. With 40kms to go he isn't going to be able to make it back as the peloton is at a quick tempo now. He joins riders already slipping off the back of the peloton.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/18.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Azteca - NBCSN puts the hammer down even further and drags back
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Edmondson and i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/kom_zps3cc10dba.png Stuyven with 34kms to go.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/19.jpg

The breakaway riders must be extremely tired because nobody even attempts to attack for the KoM points on the 6th cat. climb with 27kms to go.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/20.jpg

Victim #3... i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Farabaugh. Surprising not to see a huge wreck yet, but just single individual ones... wait... hope I didn't just jinx it...

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/21.jpg

Back to the front of the race, 22kms to go. Huge attack by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Dabrowski. Breakaway is still 1'20" up the road.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/22.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Edmondson joins him. We are also getting word i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Bugge has been dropped by the peloton. He and his team manager are going to want to forget about this race as soon as possible.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/23.jpg

More attacks! This time i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Fahnert and stage favourite i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Kolobnev.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/24.jpg

But those 4 can't work together in the peloton brings it all back, so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Kolobnev goes again. 16kms to go.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/25.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Kolobnev catches the morning breakaway. A chase group of 3 has formed behind him. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Fonte, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Fahnert, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Cioban.

With the breakaway caught they will not get a chance to challenge for the final cat. climb. So, who wins the King of Mountains competition because there are no more cat. climbs in the rest of the tour?

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Joseph and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Wu. They both finish on 80 points, we get a joint winner. Unless of course one of them is unable to finish the remaining 4 stages. Which I guess is possible with cobbles waiting.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/26.jpg

The attackers come together and stop working! So, the peloton wipes them all out! Back to square one once again. 11kms to go.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/27.jpg

It's i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Cioban that makes the next move with 8kms to go, attacking up the last categorized climb. Behind him are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Fahnert, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Fonte, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Passalacqua.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/28.jpg

5kms to go. Behind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Cioban there are now 3 groups of 3 riders each.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Wyss
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Fonte
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Passalacqua

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Fahnert
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Bole
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Selander

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Firsanov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Gaimon
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Appleby

Then the peloton with still 124 riders.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/29.jpg

The 2nd group catches the first chase group but then sit around and look at each other so the 3rd group catches them and then the peloton... wow.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Cioban is now your lone leader.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/30.jpg

However, the sprint opens up and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Cioban doesn't realize it. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Wyss and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Passalacqua get good jumps but did they go to early?

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/31.jpg

Yes, here comes everyone else now at full speed! This is anyone's victory now.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/32.jpg

Out of nowhere i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Sweeting storms to the lead. One of the few sprinters that survived the hills. He is getting challenged by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Barta, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Iglinski, and his teammate i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Aulas.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/33.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Iglinski to the lead! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Bole finishing fast as well, he could be looking at the yellow jersey.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/34.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Iglinski takes a peek and...

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/35.jpg

Celebrates because the victory is his!

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/S2/36.jpg

Behind riders are all over the place as those that were at the front with 700 meters to go were being overtake by the sprinters that timed their finishes better. The rest of top 5 ended by being i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Sweeting, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Bole, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Hamilton, and i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/yellow_zps6c2eea76.png Duque.

The top 10 includes a whole host of new names that stayed out of harms way and timed their sprint well: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Selander, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Schoonbroodt, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Zamri Salleh, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Velits, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Barta.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Duque keeps the overall lead but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Iglinski is on the same time and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Bole is in 3rd just 4 seconds back.

Numerous riders finished behind in the fast wet race. Mostly sprinters but a few cobblers slipped through the cracks. On the positive, no abandons even after having 3 brutal crashes today.

That will do for stage 2, thanks for watching.

Hopefully the weather will clearly up for tomorrow's stage.
