Benelux Challenge - Stage 1
Mresuperstar
i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/Profile.jpg

Sunny and warm, what more could you ask for? Should be a great opening day of the Benelux Challenge. The favourites for today's opening 173km flat stage are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Drapac, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Vanderaerden.

Let's head down to the start line as we are about to get underway!

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/1-1.jpg

There goes the gun! We are off! Will be interesting to see who tries to get into the morning breakaway early with a category 4 climb 13kms into today's route.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/2.jpg

A group of 4 attacks 6kms into the stage:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Sanikwathi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Stuyven,
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Carapaz
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Mayho.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/3.jpg

The peloton is unhappy with that group and quickly pulls them back.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/4.jpg

But the 4 of them go again, this time joined by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Kulppi and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Mundle.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/5.jpg

A good battle for the points at the top with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Stuyven taking the max 5 over i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Sanikwathi (3) and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Mayho (1).

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/6.jpg

Shortly after everyone up front is caught expect for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Stuyven and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Mayho,
the peloton is finally starting to ease up a bit, is this our breakaway of the day?

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/7.jpg

I would say so. 130kms to go, gap at 3'30" and growing.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/8.jpg

108kms to go at the 2nd cat. 4 climb. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Stuyven easily beats i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Mayho.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Bajadali takes the single point left out of the peloton.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/9.jpg

Approaching the final categorized climb today when... disaster strikes and our cameras missed it. Canadian i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Veilleux crashes with 91kms to go. He looks okay, but you never know. He does rejoin the peloton after 15kms of chasing.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/10.jpg

Back up front, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Stuyven goes 3 for 3 today on the climbs and secures the king of the mountains jersey for tomorrow. However, 79kms to go and the peloton is 3 minutes behind them.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/11.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Stuyven takes the only sprint point today as well with 35kms to go.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/12.jpg

Surprisingly, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Drapac sprint for the 3rd place when the peloton rolls through. The American gets it, but was it really worth the 2 sprint points and 2 bonus seconds?

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/13.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Stuyven has had enough of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Mayho as he attacks away with 24kms to go. It's highly unlikely he will make it to the finish on this solo attack with the peloton closing the gap to under 2 minutes but you have to applaud his effort at least.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/14.jpg

In a day that has seen multiple teams share the pace-making on the front it's i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Azteca - NBCSN, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Team Nordeus, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Bank of Ireland – Irish Cycling do all the work down the stretch. They pick up i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Mayho with 14kms to go and set their sights on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Stuyven a minute up the road.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/15.jpg

Chaos at the back of the race! 9 riders go down! No time to recap, but from our vantage point there are no big names on the pavement, the peloton is charging fast towards the finish line.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/16.jpg

Exactly 10kms to go and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Stuyven is caught. He will at least get the KoM jersey to wear tomorrow for his effort.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/17.jpg

5kms to go and no sprint trains have formed, it's all i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Bank of Ireland – Irish Cycling occupying the front of the race.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/18.jpg

Seconds later 3 trains emerge!
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.pngMillan
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.pngDuque
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.pngFarrar
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.pngBarclayi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.pngUugunbayar
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.pngHarrisoni439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.pngAlaphilippei439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.pngSweeting
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.pngDrapaci439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.pngStankovici439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.pngSutton
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.pngBole

Behind them deciding on which train to follow are:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Iglinski
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Wyss
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Selander
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Velits
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Aulas
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Averin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Vitoria

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/19.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar is looking at a clean run up with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Duque leading him out with 1.8kms to go while the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Nordeus and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Bank of Ireland trains sort of combine and mix.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/20.jpg

With the mix-up on the left side of the road i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Harrison decides to go alone leaving his captain i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Drapac behind. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar has to be loving what he sees. The only man he should be worried about now is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Uugunbayar on his wheel.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/21.jpg

Under the banner, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Harrison is putting up a strong fight but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar is just waiting to make his move and has dropped i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Uugunbayar off his wheel. Surely, he has this in the bag.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/22.jpg

Behind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar it's i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Stankovic, fading i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Uugunbayar, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Alaphilippe,
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Bole, and finally i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Drapac.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/7955a373-f8ac-4d8a-8b7f-8d57bfb70d4f.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar kicks but is somehow struggling to find speed, the line is in sight.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/24.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar literally has nothing left in his tank...

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/25.jpg

But it's i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar's teammate i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Leonardo Duque that saves the day and gets a very surprising win over i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Harrison and charging i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Bole who takes 3rd.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/26.jpg

The rest of the top 10 rounds out to a disappointing 4th for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar, 5th
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Sutton, 6th i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Stankovic, 7th i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Alaphilippe, 8th i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Sweeting, 9th late surging i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Iglinkski, and 10th i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Millan.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Benelux%20Challenge/27.jpg

Now sorting through all the riders coming in after the peloton and there are a few surprising names to lose time. Most due to laziness, others dues to being held up by crashes. The unlucky ones are:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Kolobnev
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Duggan
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Bugge
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Ostergaard
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Matzka

And a few other small names. Also worth noting i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Chan abandoned the race 1.4kms away from the finish line for no apparent reason.

Check the results below for the full list of cyclists to lose time. Heartbreaking for a few teams to have their leaders lose time by being careless on a simple flat stage. But, that's cycling. You win some, you lose some.
