The third stage shares many similarities with the second one as it features a hilly mid part as well. This might well be the most crucial section for Stannard to survive in order to keep the chance to stay in yellow until the end.
Cameron Meyer will certainly try to gain more time back on the Brit as he started to do yesterday.
The early break is, in contrary to the last stage, not reeled back in, and so 5 riders are allowed some leeway without a lot of effort required.
Pranata is happy he isn't chased down again, and he is joined by Veilleux, Lindau, Mas and Bauhaus.
In the peloton, Fletcher shares the early work with ASDA who make sure Stannard is at the front at all times.
Which is a good thing, because just a few metres later and a few positions further back, Henao crashes.
Luckily, he doesn't take anyone with him, doesn't seem hurt and rejoins the bunch soon.
While the break enjoys the flowers, Stannard is faced with the first of many rises in the road today.
Up front, Veilleux is the only rider from the break interested in the first mountain points. The gap to the peloton rose to 6 minutes in the meantime.
KoM 1: Veilleux Lindau Mas
At the second and third red banners across the road on today's ride, the Canadian repeats his performance to take the maximum points available today.
With Earle doing the same yesterday, he'll still fall short of receiving the jersey this evening though.
KoM 2: Veilleux Lindau Mas
KoM 3: Veilleux Mas Pranata
Behind, Stannard's hands get slightly sweaty as Kohler ups the pace on the last serious incline, it's a good strategy of Michael Schär's team to let a strong puncheur relay here.
Even though the field streches a bit, Stannard keeps contact to the relaying train all the time though and makes it over the last KoM rather easily.
The gap slightly melted to 4:15 in the meantime.
Veilleux is really on fire today, he takes the only bonus points available on the route today as well.
Bauhaus and Mas take the rest.
Int 1: Veilleux Bauhaus Mas
The rest of the riders cross that point 3:30 in arrears.
Considering there are only 32 kilometres left to ride, this might well become very exciting again!
TomTom and Vontobel do the most work though, so teams like Ameriabank and Fletcher should have some forces left to take over.
And soon, exactly those teams hit the front and really stretch the field. If there was any significant wind today, this could've easily be mayhem.
At least it means the break is well in sight with around 6 kilometres to go.
We already have some strong trains forming, with surprisingly BoI looking best so far.
Popov Petrie-Armstrong Hochmann Dearden Hawkins Serebriakov McLay Drapac Rowe Haller Matthews Meyer
Manarelli, Fonseca and Awang are close to Meyer.
Suddenly, both BoI and Fletcher slightly collapse with Ameriabank surging to the front on the far left.
As the sprint starts, we can see Pranata and Lindau still lead in the background, but Popov just accelerated and brings his train very close.
Drapac is gone and Meyer does face a decent gap to close as well, but the latter at least has Haller left on his side.

Rowe
Awang
Haller Manarelli Meyer Fonseca
As Hochmann takes the lead, Meyer is blocked by a fading Veilleux in cooperation with his own team mate Haller, and it looks like the front 6 or 7 are quite at an advantage at the moment.
Before Serebriakov can come around his leadout, Rowe starts his sprint on the left, dragging Awang and Manarelli with him.
Lindau is meanwhile the second to last breakaway rider to be caught. Pranata is still further ahead though!
Haller now enters the picture as well, but where is Meyer?
There he is! Somehow Hochmann couldn't keep the speed at a level where the huge gap meant game over for the points leader, and Drapac returns as well.
At the flamme rouge, we see that Pranata is not going to make it.
But it looks like Serebriakov, from the perfect position, isn't either! Drapac leads the sprinter bunch on the right, and Meyer flew past everyone thanks to Haller's massive effort.
Rowe already fades on the left, while Fonseca and Matthews hope to overtake the Russian as well.
Drapac now goes past Pranata while Serebriakov finally leaves the slipstreams.
Forero, from nowhere, is now level with him and Fonseca and looks to reach Drapac.
The Australian came from too far back though, and Meyer is looking good up the middle.
Forero has the highest speed of all riders here and catches up to Meyer while keeping off Serebriakov.
Not far further back, Vingerling enters the fight for the podium.
The Colombian is trying to go around Meyer, and Matthews leaves Serebriakov behind him in the shadows while Vingerling benefits from everyone fading, too.
But Cameron Meyer proves again that he's probably the strongest sprinter in this race by winning the stage.
Forero did well to finish second, while Vingerling just outsprints Matthews for the last podium spot.
Many riders have to be disappointed today though as we had lots of faces at the front throughout these interesting 3 kilometres.
