New Zealand Cycle Tour - Stage 2
cio93
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/Stage2_zps2151d38f.jpg

Slightly cloudy sky awaits the riders for the second stage today.
The undulating terrain in the middle of the stage might prove crucial to drop a few riders like Stannard or some sprinters if ridden hard by their opponents, and the wind is strong as well.

There is no established breakaway until the first intermediate sprint, but four recent attackers just did that early enough to catch the sprinters off-guard.

INT 1: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Veilleux i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Van Poppel i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Wu

Those three and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Pranata in fourth do not enjoy much time at the front as they're reeled in quickly.
Shortly after, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.pngEarle attacks alone and does get a nice gap rather easily.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0004_zpsb0b1500f.jpg

He wins the first KoM sprint with an advantange of more than 3 minutes to the bunch, where i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Affonso soloes through the banner as second. He does not continue his attack though.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0006_zps10637ab8.jpg

The same game for the next two sprints: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Earle obviously comes across the line first and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Affonso takes the runner-up spot twice, though he was challenged by Knees at the third KoM.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Earle meanwhile enjoys the ride through the countryside and did not have to fight a lot to maintain the gap so far. It's 4:25 minutes with 60k to go.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0009_zpsdd0d4507.jpg

Behind, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png ASDA slowly starts to utilize their helpers to reduce the gap now.
Soon later, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Ameriabank, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Fletcher-Garneau and BoI help their cause.
The last KoM is uncontested.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0011_zps89d2472e.jpg

KoM 4: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Earle i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Kimmince i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Avetisyan

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png ASDA really lays down the hammer on the flat after the KoM, and the field splits!

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0014_zpsaaab675c.jpg

Caught behind are no significant TTers, but some sprinters didn't make the cut in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Westling, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Manarelli, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Drapac and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Awang.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0013_zpscc56abf5.jpg

Under the 10k banner, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Earle is going sufficiently quick enough to still keep a slight gap, but it's down to less than 50 seconds while the trains start to form behind.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0015_zps27a2f9e0.jpg

It's i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Fletcher and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Ameriabank fighting for positions with a few sprinters latching on to the trains.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png McLayi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Popov

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Meyeri439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Serebriakov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Matthewsi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Rowe

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0016_zps711fb374.jpg

A few metres later, Ameriabank collapses though, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Serebriakov is forced to close the gap to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Matthews himself to regain some slipstream.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Rowe has been accompanied by a file of riders behind, namely i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Fonseca, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Haedo, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Vingerling and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Polivoda.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0018_zps49e50f4b.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Haller as the last leadout peels off rather quickly, but at least he distanced all but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Meyer, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Matthews and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Serebriakov up until that point.
Nevertheless, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Meyer has to go with about 2k to go.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0019_zps75205a00.jpg

But could this be only for second place? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Earle still leads with enough of a gap to not even see the sprint behind yet! He has more than a minute and is really close to the line already.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0017_zpsd5e162f5.jpg

The sprinters behind the trio struggle to close the gap and see their chances of bonus seconds getting smaller.
Under the kite, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Matthews and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Serebriakov still use i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Meyer's slipstream, although waiting that long means there doesn't seem to be an intention to still catch the Aussie up front.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0021_zpscd1a892b.jpg

And indeed i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Earle takes the win today! A massive performance being alone out front all day, and while this is certainly the fault of the peloton as well, he did great to keep the chase away when the sprint preparation was going on.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0022_zps6766a656.jpg

The sprint is surprisingly uneventful with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Meyer retaining his lead all the way to the line, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Serebriakov could only overtake i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Matthews in the end.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0023_zps49990024.jpg

Positions 5 and 6 surprisingly go to leadout men in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Haller and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Popov ahead of the ASDA duo i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Brammeier/i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Avery. The rest of the sprinters struggled a lot to close the gap to the front and lost too much energy to at least be the best of the rest.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/NZ2/PCM0024_zpse6231c40.jpg

A pretty strange stage in the end, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Stannard keeps yellow as even a 50-second gap for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Earle is not enough to claw back the TT losses.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Meyer however started his task of getting into yellow decently with 12 bonus seconds, which put him only 25 seconds back and obviously into green for now as well.
