New Zealand Cycle Tour - Stage 1
cio93
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Stage1_zpsa239f540.jpg

A basically pan-flat time trial of 20 kilometres starts the racing in New Zealand, and without an intermediate checkpoint giving us a decent idea of the strenght of the favourites and sprinters, we have to wait at the finish line to sort the riders by effort as they pass through and clock out.

Starting the C2 stage racing season is actually a PCT rider in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Wu.
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0001_zpsaf88a8da.jpg
He is decent against the clock and gives us a first indication of the course characteristics on this sunny afternoon by taking 28'25" to complete the course.

Shortly behind him, in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Rousseau, the first rider with a shot at a Top 10 or possibly better goes off the ramp.
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0002_zps1b1e7f4f.jpg
He is clearly faster than i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Wu and takes the lead with a time of 27'50". Everyone still starting can guess pretty well what time should be expected to be in the mix today.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Michael Schär is a Top5-favourite for today and it took him less than 26 minutes 30 to go under the kite.
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0004_zps12d00610.jpg
He keeps the speed up and smashes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Rousseau's lead by another 22 seconds.
27'28" is now the time to beat, and we can already assume not many will be able to go lower today.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Zoidl and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Renäng are two riders who should come pretty close at least, and indeed they do.
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0007_zpsbf74a5fb.jpg
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0009_zps636776d9.jpg
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Zoidl has to settle for temporary second spot though (+17" ), while using i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Paiani's slipstream doesn't help i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Renäng much further. He does beat i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Zoidl though and gets 4 seconds closer to the Swiss leader (+13" ).

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Gerd Joeaar should be in a similar league to the two formerly mentioned riders, but all attention is now drawn towards i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Ian Stannard who leaves the starting house and starts to put down the hammer!
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0011_zps9ff9b90b.jpg
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0012_zps6af4d706.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Joeaar proves he's worth of that evaluation and comes home only 9 seconds slower than i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Schär.
It's not worth too much though now that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Stannard crosses the line!
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0013_zps9952dedb.jpg
He looks back at the clock and sees 27'04" there. 24 seconds faster than i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Schär and really tough to beat for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Elijzen and the others yet to ride.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Sam Horgan is possibly New Zealand's best chance for a good result today, but he has to be content with 7th (+40" ).
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0015_zps5b80a1c5.jpg

The Swedish champ i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Lindgren is 3 seconds faster and takes a provisional 5th spot (+37" ) behind a surpisingly fast Brazilian in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Oyakaua, who equals i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Horgan's time but gets the nod by split seconds.
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0016_zps310b5c44.jpg

Possibly the only rider left to challenge Stannard for the win on a good day takes the first turn now, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Michiel Elijzen certainly should be motivated here.
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0017_zps32ee7b7a.jpg
He cannot fully live up to the expectations though and even is 6 seconds slower than i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Schär. Only third place for the Dutch specialist today (+30" ).

Meanwhile, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Hochmann gives us the first indication of what time loss sprinters will have to live with today. He scores a respectable 28th place so far, but is already 1'36" down on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Stannard.
Definitely too much for him to challenge, but there are a few sprinters present that possess stronger TT abilities and should be able to take more bonus seconds.

The Cyprian champ i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Athanasiades sports a beatiful NC today, and there is another reason to show his performance for the broadcaster: He overperforms massively!
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0019_zpsd579f373.jpg
It is s.t. as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Elijzen, only 30 seconds behind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Stannard, but the officials rule him lower than the TomTom leader. Nevertheless, a great ride by the PCT rider.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.pngTimothy Gudsell finishes right behind and it has to be assumed that there was a slight change in wind direction this afternoon as he is the fastest Kiwi clocking a good 27'39" which is enough for 6th so far, ahead of riders like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Renäng or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Zoidl who are already done showering.

Now is the moment every manager of a decent TTer feared today, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Cam Meyer looks really determinated leaving the start.
He is by quite a bit the best against the clock from the batch of sprinters present, and looking at the time gaps, possibly the only one able to overcome the deficit from today in the coming days.
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0022_zpsc89c01ca.jpg
And he does deliver today!
The board shows 27'35", one second off the podium. 31 seconds to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Stannard is certainly possible to claw back if i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Meyer performs in the sprints.

With everyone on the course now, there are only sprinters left as the DS of all teams decided to let them ride last today.
Noone does particularly impress, though i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Awang goes best of the rest in terms of sprinters 1'13" slower than i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Stannard.
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/PCM0026_zps75577494.jpg
That is still more than 3 stage wins away from overall victory for the Malaysian and already more than two behind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Meyer.

To conclude the day, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Stannard takes a rather easy win followed by quite some surprises in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Schär being faster than a slightly disappointing i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Elijzen and the rider of the day i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Athanadiades to take second, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Cam Meyer's impressive ride leaves him with the favourite role for the overall though now that Stannard can most probably only hope for favourable splits or a successful late attack to gain time on anyone.
