The U23 riders take on 5 laps of the Varese course, instead of 8 that the Elite take. The favourites are Hagen, Bellis and Leezer, but many other riders will fancy their chances.
The break:
Reckweg, Armstrong, Medvedev, Kalichmann, Munro, Seyfert, Lavoine
Their lead maxed at 7 minutes before dropping downwards again. On the main hill of the circuit on the penultimate lap, Bellis attacks! Mollemma, Hagen and Machado counter.
Machado and Mollemma cant keep up but Bellis and Hagen pass the break, with Bellis taking a solo lead. Gautier (France), Hermans (Belgium) and Pluchkin (Moldova) also get away.
31km and 1 lap to go, Bellis leads over Hagen. Hermans, Gautier and Pluchkin have been caught.
5km later and Hagen has caught Bellis.
Colombia and Netherlands led the chase but disaster for Colombia as Uran crashes!
They reach the main hill for the final time and Gautier, Hermans and Pluchkin attack away once again.
A furious charge from Colombia brings Uran back in contact with the front group but he has no reserves to even attempt an attack.
4km to go, Hagen and Bellis are together, while Hermans, Gautier and Pluchkin stretch out.
Hagen suddenly pulls away from Bellis!!
And Edvald Boasson Hagen is the World Under 23 Champion!!
A brilliant 2nd for Jonathan Bellis, who will hopefully sign for a British continental team and develop into an even better rider.
Hermans fades in the last kilometre and Pluchkin takes advantage, sprinting past him with 200m to go to take the Bronze medal.
Hermans 4th, Gautier 5th.
Tom Leezer takes 6th ahead of Van Stayen.
