AMEXpc is entering their 3rd season in the ManGame. In 2012, then called American Express, the team was dominated by three strong climbers. Carlos Ospina on the Hills, Tareq Esmaeli on the Mountains and Anthony Colby. Ultimately we finished 2nd to Het-Nieuwsblad and won promotion to the PCT in 2013.
2013 was a very difficult transition. We carried over only a handful of riders from 2012 and assembling a new team during your first full transfer season is extremely hard. The make of the team changed completely as the focus shifted from uphill to the Cobbles and the Sprints.
The early season was strong as both Bernhard Eisel and Matti Breschel we strong on the cobbles. After the Spring season AMEX's momentum sagged, the became mired and ultimately stopped. Our sprint squad was never able to get untracked. We found so many ways to loose it became laughable. Danilo Kupfernagel took most of the blame and heat for not even reaching a single podium all season, but the reality was we planned poorly and we did not have the right sprint support riders.
By the end of the season we had slipped to 23rd in the 30 team PCT. Enough to avoid relegation but not impress the sponsor or the fans. AMEXpc has agreed to sponsor the team for 2014, but better results are required no more 5 year plans.
Going into the 2014 Transfer season AMEX has a small core of good riders and several key support riders. The Cobble season will need to be evaluated as several new cobblers have joined the PCT. Matti Breschel will stay but Bernhard Eisel may move.
Without having any uphill riders in 2013, AMEX was a non-factor in way to many races. They will have to decide on a true leader on the Hills as Sylvain Chavanel and Carols Barredo are not the answer. It does not look like AMEX will challenge on any of the mountain stages/races again in 2014.
That leaves Time Trials to Patrick Gretsch and Aggrey Sebright.
The #1 decision AMEX must make in the transfer season is what to do about their sprint squad. Many are convinced that Kupfernagel has already been written off, not that he does not have the talent, but because in the sponsors and fans eyes he was the key failure of the season.
The AMEX team manager and trainers are not convinced that Kupfernagel is incapable of PCT success. They see this as and issue with his training and support riders. AMEX has three young German sprinters and that is one too many, Look for Klemme to be offered around the CT.
The following riders have been signed for 2014 but maybe available during the transfer season:
Sylvain Chavanel - A veteran of many campaigns and still strong enough to be a key assistant on the hills in the PCT or a leader in the CT. Wage 80K A CT Leader Steal.
Bernhard Eisel - May no longer be leader level for PT or PCT teams but his skills and speed make him a very valuable asset for a #2 cobbler. Wage 200K
Tyler Farrar - The team is undecided on his future but if the do decide to keep Kupfernagle, Farrar may be available. SP/79, AC/77. wage 75 very under valued sprinter.
Maher Hasnaoui - Still developing Lvl3/31, Pot5, He will develop to be a CT stage racer or a solid tour domestique in the PCT. Wage 50K
Daniel Klemme - Lvl2/1, Pot 5 he is a sprinter who can top out at SP/78. wage 50K
Danilio Kupfernagel - He needs a team who has the funds to invest in developing his skills with training. He has the speed: SP/80 AC/80. Wage down to 175K
Carlos Ospina - He is a CT level Punchuer HL/72 with a 50K wage.
Aggrey Sebright - A TT/PL guy both rated 75 but he is still Lvl 4/13. He needs a PT team to give him a shot. 50K wage.
Fabien Taillefour - I very solid #2 cobbler CB/78, and FL/77 He could be a #3 in the PT, a #2 in the PCT or a Cobble leader in the PCT - Wage 150K.
Not all of these riders will be moved, but some will. Some will be expensive and others maybe available for less than you might expect.
Look at our whole roster NO RIDER is UNTOUCHABLE, but some would require really strong offers.

Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.............
AMEXpc headquarters has been very busy this past ten days with a whole parade of Free Agents meeting with AMEX staff. Many of the riders are Americans and well known in the Salt Lake area.
Joey Rosskopf, Chad Haga, Tim Duggan, Larry Warbasse, Jacob Rathe and Nathan Brown all met with AMEX. A couple of well know American Free Agents were surprisingly missing. Joe Dombrowski who lost his team when the disbanded, will be sought after by many teams, but AMEX does not appear to have made and early contacts.
Hilly domestique, Tim Duggan, a long time fan favorite in the Salt Lake area, was expected to on the AMEX short list, but he has also be a no show at AMEX HQ.
Unconfirmed reports have a Young German also visiting but it was not one of the elite new riders. On the transfer front AMEX pushed Wikipedia hard last pre-season about Danny Summerhill and one of their hilly guys, expect that interest to continue.
Most of the media reporters have already sent Kupfernagel packing and want AMEX to go after a Free Agent sprinter to replace him.
When confronted with the Kupfernagel question, team manager, Martyn Haly was a bit vague.
"He did not have a good season for us last year, but it was not all his fault. He is fast and he is quick. We need to utilize him better and to surround him with different leadout men. All that of course will come after we see what the other teams feel he is worth. He might be moved if we can secure a rider on our short list."

Tyler Farrar is on our very short list of transfer targets. As a Washington based team we would be interested in bringing him across as our sprint leader

AMEXpc has confirmed just this morning the first wave of transfers. Team Manager Martyn Haly released:
Our first step was the sale of veteran Sylvain Chavanel. This move was mutual as AMEX need to add some younger talent on the Hills and Sylvain wanted to remain a leader. Chavanel was sold to In-n-Out Racing a new team in the CT.
The next move was to sell veteran sprinter Tyler Farrar. Farrar's trip to his new team was eventful. First a deal was tendered where Farrar was headed to Boeing-Bulgaria Pro Cycling (PCT), Azteca - NBCSN (CT) arrived late but with a better offer that sent Tyler closer to his home.
AMEX's first trade of the transfer season was competed next sending unhappy cobbler Fabien Taillerfour to Kazzinc ProCycling (PCT). In return AMEX secured the services of veteran punchuer Fabio Taborre. Fabio is several years younger than the exiting Chavanel.
When asked about future moves Haly stated: "We are looking at a small group of Free Agents and possibly another trade." When asked for details he answered:
"Not while we are still negotiating. As soon as any transactions are finalized they will be released."
The biggest news of the release is that sprinter Danilo Kupfernagel is still on the roster. The Rocky Mountain News has confirmed that he was re-signed. The question is will they allow him to return and ride or is he still one of the moves to come.
The Rocky Mountain News will continue to follow all of the teams actions during the remained or the transfer season

New Look for AMEXpc
After two seasons in their original jersey, it was time for a change. AMEXpc reached out to graphic designer Miggi133 for the new design.
Moving away from the Light Blue as their primary color, AMEXpc wanted a bold almost tribal appearance, thus Black as the primary color with Gold lettering as a link to American Express' world famous Gold credit card.
The Red, White and Blue trim is for our teams nationality of record, the USA.
Oakley Sunglasses and Navigon, the German subsidiary of Garmen, have signed on as a secondary sponsors.
Looking forward to getting them on the team and racing.

A small error: Chavanel went to In-n-Out, while I picked up Hasanoui and Ospina.

Kump is a great signing, and you should stay up easily. However you do have a fair few aging riders that will need replacing. |

Kump is an awesome signing, although expensive one. Still he's an amazing prospect, although it's a shame he's not likely to progress to next level this year.
Tabbore and Mehr Wenige are nice punchy duo although might struggle to bring great results, should be reliable scorers.
Grillo is a good replacement of Kupfernagel, although might struggle with so many 80+ in the division
And nice to see a Tour winner in your team

AMEXpc is not poised for a promotion run this season. We were able to save some Budget for training so we may get a small boost with that.
Every Free Agent is over priced in my opinion. It is the nature of the beast with so many teams competing for riders. Hopefully we can stay middle of the PCT pack for 2014 and move towards a promotion after that.
If I thought I could stay away from relegation without Kump, I would have tried to Loan him out, but I did not have that confidence.
Hopefully AMEXpc.
Some choices are difficult.

Jonas Koch [25 June 1993] German
Jonas has just signed his first pro contract (10,000 Euros). He is a punchuer with 5 potential. He should max out at HL/76 with a ST/72. His future appears to be as a hilly domestique. In 2014 he hopes to open his Pro career at l'Avenir. He is already lobbying for a position on the Bayern Rundfahrt squad if he is not selected for l'Avenir.

Jack Wilson [10 Aguust 1993] Irish
Jack Wilson grew up idolizing the legendary Irish cobbler Sean Kelly. Like Kelly he is a cobbler with grit and heart. When he matures he should max out with a CB/74 and a ST/77. Not podium quality but his strength will play well in the stamina sucking long cobble races. In 2014 he looks forward to riding in the Cigar City cobble classic in the USA.

AMEXpc talks about their 2014 GOALS
Two of the PCT previews have been released and AMEXpc was touted for 16th place in one and 17th place in the other. Management's view is just slightly better than those two assessments, but both are very realistic.
Our personal goal is to stay in the top half of the PCT standings. Our focus on 3 cobble races for team goals are all reasonably reachable. We have top five (5) goals at the Tour of Battenkill (HC) and E3 Prijs (HC). Our win goal is the Tour of Avila (C1) and that appears to have been a wise decision as only a dozen (12) teams have entered. Avila conflicts with the 5 Jours de Dunkerque (HC) and our hope was it would pull away some of the PCT talent from Avila.
The Tour of Avila is a 246km long flat cobble race. There are 17 short sections of cobbles. AMEXpc's Matti Breschel was the 2013 winner and we hope he can repeat that feat in 2014.
E3 Prijs was also won by AMEXpc's Bernhard Eisel. A top 5 finish should be reachable on this flat 203km course with 9 cobble section and a downhill/flat finish with the potential for a small group sprint ending.
The Tour of Battenkill is a hilly 204k race in North America. In 2013 Matti Breschel finished 2nd and Bernhard Eisel finished 7th. We hope that one or both of these riders can secure another goal for the team.
Our last race goal falls late in the season (October) 5 day Tour of Beijing. With 2 flat stages and 3 hilly stages We are hoping that some of the PCT punchuers will have used up their race days by then and that Dieter Mehr-Wenige and Marko Kump can pull of a top 5 finish for us.
Our toughest goal of the season will be our team standings goal of finishing in the Top 10 of the PCT standings. Our team lacks the consistency to expect that we can achieve a top 10 standings finish, but we are not ready go give up the hope with some more focused race planning we just might sneak into that top ten placement.
As you can see we are not a promotion threat in 2014, we see this season as a building year. AMEXpc spent 1.5 million Euros on training for Matti Breschel (CB from 76 to 77) and Dieter Mehr-Wenige (HL from 77 to 78). If we are able to obtain 3 or 4 of our goals (last year we were shutout on all of our goals) then in 2015 we can continue to strengthen our rider base and still continue to spend a sizeable amount on training.
The team has also set some secondary goals that we hope to help keep us focused on improving. One is to have two (2) sprint stage HC/C1 podium visits. Our support sprinters are stronger and Paride Grillo should have a slightly easier time than Danilo Kupfernagel did last season. We also plan to turn Marko Kump loose to chase the Green Jersey and to chase stage wins on a few of the PCT's smaller tours.

AMEXpc Team manager, Martyn Haly, gave the following interview after the Tour of the Battenkill.......
AMEXpc had scheduled 10 cobble races for 2014 and with 8 completed, I have to say we are very pleased with our success. Going into this season we planned to have a shared leadership role with Eisel and Breschel sharing the workload. Matti spent a good deal of his off season in Belgium improving his cobbling skills. That work has paid off not only for him but for Bernhard Eisel as well.
Having a dual threat makes it very hard for opponents to know which rider to mark. In the last two HC cobble races, the E3-Prijs and the Tour of the Battenkill, Eisel and Breschel have dominated the podium. Eisel won the E3 and finished 3rd at the Battenkill. Breschel won the Battenkill and was 3rd in the E3.
Earlier in the season Bernhard Eisel also won the Dwars Door Vlaanadaren race. In the five HC/C1 cobble races the AMEX duo have 5 of the 15 podium spots.
This season was also AMEXpc's first invitations to Pro Tour races. While we raced well we are not yet ready to challenge the best cobblers in the world. We did show well;
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad: We struggled with Eisel a team best 23rd
Rhonde Van Vlaandaren: Breschel finished 9th
Paris - Roubais: Breschel finished 16th
Two cobble races still remain on our 2014 calendar: The Avila Classic and the Pro Tour Stradia Appia Anticia.
Avila will be a very big race for the AMEX cobblers. Three of our seasons goals fell on their shoulders. The first two have been successfully completed. We had a Top 5 finish goal for the E3-Prijs and we finished 1st and 3rd. We also had a Top 5 goal for the Tour of the Battenkill and again we finished 1st and 3rd. (maybe we should get double credit for those two goals.
The Avila is a Win Goal and with Eisel and Breschel in top form we have a chance to win 4 of the 6 HC/C1 cobble races.
All of the teams in the PCT know we struggle on the major tours and at best can marshall a few points on the Hilly classics and the sprints, so the Cobble season was so very important for us.

AMEXpc continues to flirt with the top 10 in the PCT standings. After a run of three very successful HC classics we reached 7th place, but subsequently we have dropped back to 10th.
The AMEX team is still not multifaceted. We rely too heavily on our cobblers. The 2nd half of the PCT season will need to have success from our Punchuers and Sprinters for us to maintain our top 10 status.
The upside is that some of our young prospects have shown flashes of the future. Jan Dieteren won a race out of a breakaway by riding away from the rest of the break in the final kilometer. Robert Bush, a cobbler, took a 3rd out of a breakaway. Both of these riders should make big strides this off season. Bush should end up a level 4 rider with a COB/76. Dieteren will also be a level 4 rider next season and he should be a HL/72.
Theo Reinhardt should also progress to level 4 and be SP/76, ACC/82 and Rudiger Selig will be level 4 and SP/77,ACC/79
Only Marko Kump will not make a level jump. Kump was offered for loan last off season, but a deal could not be worked out. Depending on how many points he needs to earn to max out will determine if he will be loaned out next season.
Two riders trained last off season Matti Breschel (COB/75-76) and his work has resulted in success on the track in 2013. Deiter Mehr-Wenige also trained hard after his signing HL/76/77. He racing schedule has been heavily backloaded so the 2nd half of this season will see if his off season efforts prove worthwhile.
Stijin Devolder had been expected to produce more than he did in the cobble season and at 35 years old, it is unlikely that AMEXpc will offer him a new contract for next season. Like wise Carlos Barredo's skills have deteriorated with age. Should he choose not to retire a move to the CT would be his best option.

You seem to have the same situation as me in terms of lots of level 4 riders next season without the means to get them leveled up, on to the actually racing it would be nice to Mehr Wengie doing what Breschal did and making use of his training and getting some big results. |
