Background

Cycling in Azerbaijan hasn't been the most popular of sports. In a country whose National Teams are far from the best maybe it is time for this country put its National flag on the world stage of Cycling. With the country having its first cycling race the Tour of Azerbaijan it is time for its first ever sponsored cycling team, Synergy Baku.

The team have some young riders from the home nation but most of the success that they hope to get will come from riders like Maksym Averin, Matt Brammeier and Markus Eibbeger. There is a hope here that one day this team will achieve World Tour status. But that all depends on whether the Sponsors stay after the first season and only results will determine that!

Nice team for a story!

You might want to go to User Settings -> Albums and disable 'Link back to Albums'. It's a bit more friendly for the reader(If you want to click on a screen to look better, you won't have to go to the photobucket site)

Team Leaders

Maksym Averin

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/Averin.jpg

Averin at the age of 28 is our main sprinter this season. The Ukrainian will be hoping to grab a few stage wins and help the world to see this new team Azerbaijan become well known.

Matt Brammeier

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/Brammeier.jpg

Brammeier is the current Irish National Champion. The Liverpool born 28 year old will be hoping to get back to his best after a season with Champion Systems. He will want to show why the now defunct HTC Highroad team signed him to bring him to the top all those years ago.

Phil Lavery

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/Lavery.jpg

Lavery will be hoping to finally bring success to a stop start career so far for the Irishman. He will be a strong ally for Averin in the sprints but will be given the chance to ride for himself.

Race Report

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0010-16.jpg

Today's break took over 40km's to establish after a number of attacks. But it was Korevaar who went clear of the peleton.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0011-13.jpg

Vini Fantini seen the danger of the peleton not managing the lone break. With Korevaar in danger of taking the stage Vini Fantini upped the pace of the peleton.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0012-11.jpg

This caused a huge split in the peleton as only 44 riders remained in the lead group with 15kms to go.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0013-8.jpg

But they could not catch Korevaar who takes the stage win and the leader's jersey. He know has a lead of 1"06 in GC.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0014-8.jpg

Maksym Averin won the sprint for second. The Ukrainian moves into 2nd overall. But it will be a difficult job to overhaul Korevaar now.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/NZstage3.jpg

Race Report

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0016-2.jpg

After a number of attacks 3 men went clear, they were Hnik Claeys and Romero.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0017-4.jpg

Hnik had taken the first KOM points at top of the category 4 climb after no attacks from any of the riders.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0018-2.jpg

Claeys attacked from the 500m mark to beat Romero and Hnik to top of the first category 3 climb of the day.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0019-3.jpg

He also attacked to take the third climb and wrap up the points on offer on today's stage.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0020-2.jpg

But the break was caught with 10kms to go, after Korevaar's win yesterday the peleton were determined to reel the break back in.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0021-2.jpg

Race Report

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0023-2.jpg

There were 6 riders in today's break. Silva, Hoelgaard, O'Shea, Duyn, Benoit and Di Battista.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0024-1.jpg

The first KOM points passed by uncontested with Di Battista riding over at the front to take the points.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0025-1.jpg

However that changed for the second category 4 climb as Benoit shot out from the group to take the points at the top.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0026.jpg

With the break caught it was onto the sprint finish and it was a close call between Averin and Anderson. But Anderson pipped Averin on the line to take the win.

Stage 5- Palmerston North Circuit

Today is the final stage here in New Zealand. This will be the last chance for those sprinters who have yet to get their win here. Averin will also be looking to defend his sprinters jersey.

Race Report

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0028.jpg

Segers, O'Shea, Souza, Topchanyuk all made it into the final break of this years race.

O'Shea took both KOM points in today's stage further adding to his tally from yesterday's stage.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0029-1.jpg

But with hungry sprinters wanting the stage win the break was soon caught.

i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu204/Ste117_2009/PCM0030.jpg

Unlucky Averin became the nearly man of this tour as he was once again pipped on the line. This time Gavazzi pipped Averin to take the final stage.
