[CT] Bank of Ireland - Irish Cycling {2014} - Sponsor Announcement

Welcome to the Headquarters of the next new CT team, Bank of Ireland - Irish Cycling. As already stated, we start in Cyclings lowest division, the Continental Tour. There we will be racing a varied calendar, but with clear focus on our home nation(s), Ireland (and GB). As of yet we don't have a jersey, but it is in progress. Of course our rider focus will be on Irish riders, of whom we have a few very specific targets, but more on that later. First, let's come to the sponsors:

Sponsors

We're being sponsored by one of the biggest Irish Banks, Bank of Ireland. They decided to take this step seeing how good Dan Martin and Nico Roche are doing at the top of the sport, and seeing Sam Bennett nearly take green at the Tour d'Avenir, they decided to step in and support a team to develop the sport at it's roots. They have big plans for the team, expecting it to promote to the PT at some point. However they realised that there simply aren't too many Irish that are good for this level - either they are too good or just domestiques. So they have given permission to sign other riders too, preferably from other English-speaking countries, like the UK, the US, Australia or New Zealand.

This is available for our Top 3 riders on average as of now, but we might expand it at a later point. I'll probably also add a few more categories, but at the moment the tables work well, so i'll see what exactly i can implement. As always, credit for the table goes to Alexkr00. Wink

Transfer Targets I

Ciaran Kelly

www.stickybottle.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/CK2-600x398.jpg

Ciaran has impressed all of us here at our young team in the season-ending Japan Cup, where he surprisingly managed to grab a Top 10 in what would be his teams last race. We believe he might not have what it takes to fully lead our team, but he's a very useful rider from our main country, and his abilities on the hills and in the mountains as well as his fast acceleration could prove very valuable to us. He has already expressed interest in joining us after it became clear that Vespa would not continue on to 2014.

Adam Petrie-Armstrong

cyclingulster.com/races/ll/armstrong.jpg

Adam is the second of the Irish duo that rode for Vespa last season, he is a beast on the flats. He didn't do much at PCT level last year, finishing in an obscure 555th place in the rankings with a total of only four points. He did however spend a great deal of the time in the breakaway groups, which is exactly where we'd like him to represent us too, when he's not working on the front of the pack for one of the leaders. He also has the acceleration needed to win if a breakaway group should succeed, and he can also attack on the downhill, where he is amongst the best in the world. As Kelly did, he also already expressed interest in riding for a team from his homeland, so i'm sure we can find an agreement come transfer time.

Urban Monks

pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/378800000366035592/d7dc8a8dd2042b61b5e0633df4f80d50.jpeg

Urban, once of 100% Me (now Jaguar-Eritel), has decided he wants to try and come back to cycling after two years away from the sport. We think he can still develop a fair amount, though the real question for us is if he can get fit enough in time for the upcoming season. Before his retirement, he was a typical breakaway rider with some strength on the cobbles too. We have no doubt that that would be exactly what he would come back to do, but we'll have to see.

Conor Dunne

cdn.media.cyclingnews.com//2013/05/20/1/751003_670.jpg

Conor is one of the few talents on this list, but he follows the "fighter" pattern. At the moment the only thing he's really good at is attacking and accelerating, and those are the skills we would train him on. He has the potential to become quite good at both of those, and could also improve in to a useful domestique for the flat races. He has not yet been involved in pro cycling, but we believe he is ready to take that step now.

Peter Hawkins

cyclingulster.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/pete-hawkins.jpg

Peter is pretty much the only sprinter on this list, but he is quite good at that. He has also been away from cycling for a few years, but after some good results in the domestic races, he seems ready to come back. He has a few problems picking up speed, but once he has reached top speed, he's a class act. That coupled with his general strength on the flats make him a perfect lead-out for another one of our targets, who will be revealed at a later point.

Spoiler
So, those were the Irish FAs i'm most interested in. Some more lists are to follow (F.E. Irish riders with a contract, foreign FAs, young talents, etc.) when i come back next weekend. Wink

Ollfardh - Yes, now both Irish Airlines are in Cycling. Smile
And somehow i'm not surprised you support the Aer Lingus-backed team. Smile

Five Riders join Bank of Ireland

Ciaran Kelly

www.stickybottle.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/CK2-600x398.jpg

Ciaran has come from the free agency, and was our first confirmed signing. Last year he rode at PCT level for the now disband Vespa team, where he managed to get a Top 10 at the season ending Japan Cup. He will mainly serve as domestique with permission to attack in the hilly races, where he will be a key supporter for our new team captain José Mendes, who will also be presented in this post. Besides that, he is also rather decent in the higher mountains, a terrain where we haven't secure anybody more capable than him so far.

Tobyn Horton

www.chrismaher.co.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/StocktonEliteCircuitSeries13_1125A.jpg

Tobyn is already easily one of the most talented brits at our level. His Sprinting is quite nice, but his real virtue is his acceleration, something he is already very, very good at. There's a chance he might be loaned out, but most likely he will stay with us to gain some more experience at this level. He is also very decent on the flat roads in general, and can handle the cobbles well enough to most likely make him leader for them.

Peter Hawkins

cyclingulster.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/pete-hawkins.jpg

Peter will be in for the sprints alongside Tobyn, with changeable roles. He might have been away from the Pro scene for a while, but after many good results in the domestic races, he's looking to come back now. He's been on our lists ever since he decided to take the step, and we've been closely monitoring the progress he's been making, so we decided we'd give him a chance to prove himself once again with the big boys.

Paidi O'Brien

0.static.wix.com/media/68dcd7_c1767363a89230333f1f7427d8e62428.jpg

Paidi is the first of our two transfers in. He mightn't be the best rider on the market, but him being this years road race NC, there's just no way we wouldn't sign him. He joins from the other Irish Team, Magna-Ryanair, for a mere 30k. He will ride all the big races for us, showing off his jersey with pride, but mainy he will be used as a domestique, of course always with the option to attack, for José. He's also quite all right on the flats, so you might see the Green, White and Gold jersey at the front of the peleton there too, working for Tobyn or Peter.

José Mendes

www.feltet.dk/octo_cms/files/Feltet.dk/Billeder/2013/Lob/Vuelta_a_Espana_2013/19_etape/Vuelta_2013_19_etape_Jose_Mendes_angreb.jpg

José is our absolute leader for this season. He spent last year at PCT level with the Portuguese team Prio-Porto, where his most notable results were a stage win at Vuelta al Tachira, Volta ao Algarve and USA Pro Cycling Challenge, as well as wearing the KoM jersey for 10 days at the Vuelta a Espana. He will naturally be at all the hilly races the division has to offer, including at least one of the races where he won a stage last year - the Volta ao Algarve.

steve smink
Mendes good signing!

Dippofix
Irish Trio arrive

Adam Petrie-Armstrong

cyclingulster.com/races/ll/armstrong.jpg

Adam is the flat beast in our team. He will be there at the end of the flat stages to bring our sprinter(s) to the front of the pack. He will also be getting in to moves a lot, where i'm sure he will show our jersey more than just a few times. He mightn't be a top sprinter in his own right, but he does have the kick necessary to win if a group makes it to the finish line ahead of the pack. He's also very happy he could be reunited with his old friend from Vespa-Aprillia, Ciaran Kelly, so i'm sure those two will link up great for us too.

Connor McConvey

www.stickybottle.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Connor-McConvey.jpg

Connor will be our leader in the mountains (probably), but that doesn't really say very much. Fact is he could get us a few Top 10s every once in a while, but it'll be hard to get anything more. He is however just as valuable an allround domestique, being nearly as good on the short, steep hills as on the longer mountains, and he is ever willing to attack, which might bring him and us a few nice results in mountaineous races.

Ryan Mullen

planetxireland.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/ryan-world-champs-TT6.jpg

Ryan is another very important signing for us. Many are seeing him as the future of Irish Cycling, since as of now he is easily the most talented rider the Emerald Isle has to offer. It's not fully clear yet what sort of a rider he might end up as. Though he is a time triallist now, he might develop in to some sort of a puncher too. It is clear anyway that he really has a kick to him, though he can't sustain it for a long time. So it seems likely he will be a TTist and a lead out once fully maxed out.
