As with many of the other national championships held this year, the route is hilly and well over 200 kilometres. That makes of course for a unpredictable race of course, and there are many different candidates for the blue, white and red tricolore.
We begin with the road race. Amongst them are Roy (Alstom), Levarlet (Bouygues) and Roux (Bacardi).
The full startlist:
Early on, we get the first action with Camier (Bouygues), Jeandesbosz (WWE), Mainard (Evian), Geniez (Vueling) and Mourey (Pendletons) getting in the break.
Their gap is regulated over the day, so we don't see a scenario like in the smaller NC's with the gap spiraling out of control. Alstom, Bacardi and BPost contribute to the pace.
Moving into the final 30 kilometres of the race, Gautier (BPost) decides to launch an attack, the first of the favourites to do so! Following him are Talabardon (Allianz), Chavanel (Amex) and Moinard (Simply).
They are reeled back in though by an Alstom-lead peloton though relatively quickly. Nearing the final 20 kilometres, just Geniez and Camier are left off the front, the only remains from the break.
They are caught, but Geniez doesn't give up there! The Vueling rider decides to launch a final attack with 15 kilometres left, going or glory once more.
He manages to claw out a 30 second advantage as the final climb is hit! Surely he can't hold off the charging peloton?
Sadly for him, he can't. A brave effort nonetheless. Into the last six kilometres, we'll need a big attack now to avoid a bunch sprint contesting the win inside the leading group, which still contains 58 riders.
Nearing the final couple of kilometres, the reduced bunch sprint seems nailed on! BPosta and Alstom hit the front.
As the sprint is opened up, Levarlet makes an early bid for glory! Coppel (Milka) gives chase behind, ahead of some of the other favourites like Roux and Gautier.
Entering the pivotal stages of the sprint, Levarlet is tiring and Coppel is now leading. Roux, Roy and Gautier are coming as well though!
It looks like it's Gautier that's got the speed!
Cyril Gautier is the French Champion! The BPost rider stops the rot after a horrible season and ends the season on a high. Could this be the break he needs to secure his status as a top classics rider?
Roux and Roy have to settle for second and third in the end, not their year this time around.

Now we have the ITT, a 40 kilometre flat race against the clock. One clear favourite today: Coppel (Milka), who will be hard to stop especially as he will probably be determined to win after coming so close in the road race. We'll see if anyone can pull off a surprise and take the national title.
The first very competitive time is set by Bernadeau (Festina), who clocks a time of 53'16". We'll see how that holds up against the other strong riders here today.
Mottin (Bouygues) is one of the contenders today, but can't beat Bernadeau's time today. He finishes 45 seconds down at the finish, and sits in provisional second.
The Festina rider still leads as the penultimate rider finishes. But last off is the big favourite Coppel though, and as expected he crushes the best time, stopping the clock on 52'20". That's 56 seconds ahead, which means he's the national champion!
