[Mini] Vuelta a Andalucia - Stage 2
Bikex
Today we have a flat stage, probably being contested by the sprinters.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/56dcdf6c-abd4-47e4-86f8-678d326165c0_zps2020f182.png

The punchier sprinters like KazMunayGas's Ivan Stevic or Ezzedine Lagab (ArgoAirways) are probably being favoured, though, as the finish lane goes slightly uphill. A morning breakaway will most likely fight for the first mountain jersey.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02001_zps1be9e305.jpg

Just after the race was given free William Clark (Commonwealth Bank) is the first to attack this race.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02002_zpsb9bc3474.jpg

But his attack wouldn't be successful. The spectators see a very nervous beginning with a lots of attacks. Here one led by Thomas Rabou (Rucanor). The riders following are Howelynck (Dexia), Northey (7-Eleven), Orozco (Coldeportes), Pulido (América Móvil), Cappelle (Elctrabel) and Kolessov (KazMunayGas).

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02003_zps978e8a11.jpg

BNP Paribas is the team to neztralize all those early attacks. They obviously set high hopes in their leader Justin Jules for today!

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02004_zps63888f86.jpg

In the end a group of five was allowed to set themselves free. They are Cappelle (Electrabel), Orozco (Coldeportes), Kolessov (KazMunayGas), Hovelynck (Dexia) and Northey (7-Eleven), with Orozco being the best placed rider in GC being 12 seconds behind and 42nd.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02005_zpsd2f3b585.jpg

That didn't mean the attacks out of the peloton would stop, here we see Kimmince (Commonwealth Bank) with a late attempt to bridge the gap to the break.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02006_zpsad83f6b8.jpg

But in the end none of these late attempts wer successful and it became clear that the five previous mentioned would contest the first mountain sprint.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02007_zps2558bbc8.jpg

Contest was the wrong word for that what happened, in the end nobody seemed interested to take the first Mountain points and so Northey takes it in front of Cappelle and Orozco.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02008_zps0586da66.jpg

On top of the hill Stefan Cohnen jumps out of the field and is eager to get to the front of the racing.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02009_zps6e314222.jpg

He closes the gap just before the next mountain sprint.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02010_zps8b4bc613.jpg

Also Tunesian Ben Matoog is trying to get his luck by escaping. He is 45 seconds behind the break and 34 seconds in front of the peloton at the moment.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02011_zps7c0d6438.jpg

Nobody cares for the next mountain sprint as well, so it is again Northey taking it, this time ahead of Orozco and Cohnen.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02012_zpsd1d6a02d.jpg

Ben Matoog soon closes the gap to the front when we see another lonely rider trying to bridge the gap. Bekeart of Van Merkstijn is that, although being the from the team of the leader, Van Merkstijn obviously has different priorities than the leaders jersey. In the backgound we see also Pereira of Eroski attack.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02013_zps58b5d9e3.jpg

Bekeart gets to the front group, but Kolessov feels that a break of eight would be to much for the teams of the favourites and the attacking once again starts from the beginning.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02014_zps421b3711.jpg

he crosses the last mountain sprint of today as the first closely followed by the remainder of the break, led by Orozco and Hovelynck, and the peloton. 7-ELeven's Northey will be dressed with the polka dot jersey tomorrow.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02015_zps1b870400.jpg

The peloton catches the break shortly after, Kolessov is once again punching out of the field.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02016_zps6c1bd77b.jpg

Kolessov is joined by De Winde (Electrabel), Pauriol (SFR) and Bernucci of Miche, who was listed before as an outside favourite for the stagewin today. So finally after 90 kilometres of racing we got the BotD!

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02017_zpsa67b1f59.jpg

Meanwhile, Van Merkstijn takes on the burden of defending the leaders jersey.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02018_zpsd0d8ea64.jpg

At 75 kilometres to go the break has an advantage of 5'38'' to the peloton. Kolessov had to pay the toll for his many attacks and is already dropped by the break, now he is 54'' behind.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02019_zps8b605a81.jpg

With 50 kilometres to go Pauriol takes the intermediate sprint in front of Bernucci. The lead is at 3'53''. Kolessov is already almost swallowed by the peloton.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02020_zps5ae466b9.jpg

The peloton moves with an incredible pace and with 20 kilometres to go and a lead of 1'31'' it doesn't look good for the trio in front.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02021_zpsa5338c61.jpg

But the break can secure the majority of it's lead until the 10 kilometres mark, where they are still a minute in front. It looks to get exciting now.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02022_zps2b72e898.jpg

It wasn't meant to be a day for the break, the peloton only needed 3 kilometres to close the 1 minute gap, It's a race between the sprinters now!

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02023_zpsa6379737.jpg

then we see sprint trains forming, Fuji with Masahiro and Banihammad leading out Pierzga being in the best position at the moment. Behind them we see Rangel of América Móvil.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02024_zps3a85a2d7.jpg

Then the gradient began to raise and Node4 catches up, on the wheel of Hawkins we see Lagab (ArgoAirways), Aarbia (Standard Bank) and Pacheco (iBanesto) the BNP Paribas train for Jules is also coming to the front. Race leader Huizenga is also contesting the sprint and not being in a bad position.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02025_zps6be8822f.jpg

1 kilometre to go and Piezga is in a good position, also Hawkins, Aarbia and Jules have launched their sprint.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02026_zps1f563cc3.jpg

And then it's Lagab with a turbo, the others fade and he is coming very strong and now in front. Now also Frazer (Coldeportes), Pacheco and Delgado (both iBanesto) and Tarqui (Millenium) are coming!

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia02027_zps93d4fe48.jpg

It's the Algerian! Great effort, Frazer second and Jules third. Lagab also takes the overall lead and will be eager to defend that in the coming hills!
