At last the mountains make their mark here in Utah. Five categorized climbs will torment many people’s legs today, but we’re looking for a great day of racing.
Big breakaway today, 9 men are willing to try it long distance. Among them Silvestre who’ll be looking to conquer enough points to confirm his KoM jersey. However with Beyer and Tankink also here that task might prove to be complicated. With them are Alafaci, Routley, Pate, Westra, Vink and Olman. Their gap quickly reaches 4min.
Silvestre wins the first KoM battle ahead of Beyer and Vink.
Routley takes the first Sprint. Silvestre and Alafaci are 2nd and 3rd there. The break’s advantage is 6’20 now.
At KoM#2 Beyer takes revenge on Silvestre and overtakes him for maximum points. Tankink comes next. The Portuguese leads by 6 points at the moment.
The 3rd KoM prime of the day grants another victory for Beyer. Routley takes 2nd while Silvestre is only third, which reduces his lead to 2 meagre points. There are now 60km to the finish and the gap has been shrunk to less than 4min now.
Meanwhile the first attacks come from the pack. Alizadeh has initiated the hostilities. Abrekov has also decided to get away from the peloton.
Gonzalo and Pantano Gomez bridge up to Abrekov. They quickly get 1’40 on the bunch. Alizadeh has joined the early escapees who have 1’18 on the chasers now.
Last sprint of this race is taken by the dominant Beyer. 2nd goes for Alizadeh and 3rd for Alafaci
News come from behind. Another crash for Kenya Airways. This time is only Kaliliwhatever but he has chosen a bad time, since we’re going up again. Barcelona’s De la Cruz had punctured earlier but his team mates have just brought him back as you can see in the rear of the pack.
Having reached the penultimate climb, the bunch has decided to start pressuring the escapees. At the front Alizadeh has taken command and as a result KoM leader Silvestre has been dropped and caught by the chasers along with Tankink and Olman. He can kiss goodbye to his polka dot jersey…
Alizadeh rips the whole group apart and starts building a gap with the stage win in mind. He naturally takes this 1st. category climb. The rest passes one by one after him: Gonzalo, Pantano Gomez, Abrekov, Westra, Vink… and only then Beyer , which means…
*damdamdamdam*
He and Silvestre are now tied in the KoM classification at 38 points, and it’s all to be decided in the final climb of this race!!
But before that, time for an acceleration by Rodas!
His effort is good enough to catch some of the chasers but as soon as the final climb starts the bunch makes the junction. Only Alizadeh in the front now. His advantage? 2min. There are now only 15km to the end of this Tour, and they’re all uphill.
13.7km left marks the second attempt of Rodas.
And look what the Colombian has provoked. A major split has occurred in the pack with a group of 9 breaking free from the rest of the bunch. These are:
Galta
Schrangl
Rohregger
Nieve
Toribio
Perez Sanchez
Boily
Larsson
Reis
They catch Rodas with 9km to go. Alizadeh still holds 1’14. Behind them it’s Kononenko who leads the chase. The gap isn’t greater than 40’’.
Boily is the first to get dropped from the main group. Reis, Toribio and Galta also struggle.
But look at this. With 5km remaining Kononenko has almost caught the main group! Monstrous work from the ukranian.
4.5km to go and Alizadeh is about to be caught as well. After another brave attempt, Sauber seems to have lost another stage-win chance.
Nieve is the one doing the pace in the front group and this gives us the final selection. Only Rohregger, Larsson and Rodas can follow his wheel.
And as soon as Alizadeh is caught, Nieve goes for glory. Kononenko’s group is a minute behind them. We can see a good number of Adira-Isq’s and Mobil-Castrol’s jerseys there
With 3.5km to go Nieve, Larsson and Rohregger have decided it's time to leave Alizadeh and Rodas behind. The gradient is 12.5% at this point.
…indeed they’ve conquered a decisive gap. 2km to the summit.
Last km for the front trio…
… Larsson makes his move…
… Rohregger goes after him…
…but he just doesn’t have enough to pip the swede in the final sprint. Victory for Gustav Larsson!! The Swedish all-rounder never really looked in trouble and being able to cope with the best climbers he takes advantage of the yellow jersey superpowers to edge his Austrian opponent for a second stage-win which also seals his GC triumph.
Nieve’s audacity sees him relegated to 3rd.
Behind them Rodas finishes a good day with 4th 1’27 down on the winner. The men of the day Kononenko and Alizadeh finish together at 1’57 in that order, while Roman leads a group of six at 3’05 where Perez Sanchez, Cabreira, Silva, Anthony, Monsalve and Galta also feature
So to conclude this race we have Gustav Larsson as the GC and Points overall winner. Fabio Silvestre believe it or not actually ended up winning the KoM classification. Adira-Isq top the Team ranks after a brilliant last day, while Hossein Alizadeh also profits from today’s efforts to besiege the U25 class
