Time-trialing time again here in the USA
Circa 20km of an up and down ITT which is set to prepare us for the more inclined stages. The gradient doesn’t go higher than 2% though until the intermediate point after which the riders face a nice descent.
First time of note comes from James Lewis Perry SA’s TT champion
Unfortunately for him, Miles Olman is just two men after him in the GC and takes 38’’ to his time. We might see some interesting gaps opening today…
Daan Rijntjes has taken 2nd place in the checkpoint, can he prove to be faster than Olman? No he can’t. 16’’ is the difference which gives him provisional 2nd place.
We’ve missed Rohan Dennis who has taken 3rd place at the finish. Fonte is 9th at the checkpoint, what’s going to be his final time… 3rd, 30’’ slower than Olman.
Sebright was losing 20’’ earlier, but he looks faster now. He dethrones Fonte of his podium place having wasted 26’’ more than Olman.
Can Athanasiades recover a podium spot for Privatbank? 28’’ deficit gives him only 4th place at the moment.
Goddaert’s turn now, he was one of the best at the intermediate point, and with 12’’ more than Olman he can be proud of his provisional 2nd.
But look who comes after him. It’s Ford! He already has the best checkpoint time with 13’40, can he strengthen Oz’s chances here? Hell yeah, 26’41, 11’’ faster than his mate Olman.
Gazelle try again with Westra who has already overtaken Tzortzakis and made quite and impression at the mid-stage check. But his time is only good to make him the best non-Oz rider so far 22’’ down on the leader.
Martinez is probably out of GC contention now but he may well be looking to improve his form today. His time is only good for 8th place 37’’ slower than the leader. Meanwhile his team mate Gdhamsi has taken fourth place 22’’ away from the leading time.
It takes long time before someone of note starts his TT. Silva could be an interesting bet but he’s just not among the best today
Rohregger’s TV time has arrived, and everybody is waiting to see what he can do today. He should be able to distance riders like Moreno while limiting losses to Larsson. His team manager breathes a sight of both relief and surprise as he sees the Austrian clock the 3rd best time so far today, 15’’ off the pace, only losing time to the Australians.
Last chance for Privatbank to make a stand today is named Mykhaylo Kononenko. The Ukrainian is a fair all-rounder and at this point a top5 candidate at least. Having used 25’’ more than Ford he’ll occupy 7th place
With almost all GC candidates on the road or having already finished let’s have a look at the time differences between the ones we haven’t been able to follow on the road:
Craig Lewis+ 48 Rafael Reis+ 49 Maky Roman+ 52 Mikel Astarloza+ 56 Francisco Perez Sanchez+ 57 Julián Rodas+ 59 Daniel Eduardo Silva+ 1'08 Eduardo Gonzalo+ 1'20 Daniel Moreno+ 1'22 Thiago Duarte Nardin+ 1'35 João Cabreira+ 1'50
Tough day for some of these guys.
But there’s still Gustav Larsson to add to the equation. The swede is quite an eclectic sportsman and will want to put in some time between him and Rohregger, but with the Austrian having such good legs today he may even risk losing time today. Shocked faces around OzCycling’s bus as they look at the time of the Swedish TT champion of 26’34, 7 seconds faster than Ford!!
And with that plot twist we just need to wait for the late finishers. Keough being the last of them and predictably not even being close to maintaining his yellow jersey.
We end this broadcast with news of yet another GC leader. Gustav Larsson is his name. He also shares the Points classification lead with Ford now. Gazelle is now the best team, while Fabio Silvestre adds the U25 classification to his KoM leadership
