So, at last, the Winter Olympics are here again, and the opening ceremony is set to kick off in just over a day. However, some events are already getting started in a few hours time!
It is known that a vast majority of people just see the Winter Olympics as a hockey event and nothing else, but nonetheless, here is the thread!
Feel free to comment below your medal predictions, thoughts and comments, as well as any inside information you may have on any bombings that could take place in the near future.

I think USA and Canada vie for top of the medal count, with Canada getting most golds, but USA gets most medals. Canada won't win Hockey, and there will be some form of terrorist attack

Don't think there'll be much from the terrorists, just empty threats imo. In terms of the actual sport, hoping for some good performances from Australia, with a few golds to go with it.

Just as a hockey event? Nah. Hockey should be one of the sports that I don't really care about, along with Curling

Good one.
I don't give a shit about the Winter Olympics at all or any of the sports there. However, I am enjoying following the various news items coming out of Sochi. For example the various journalists live-tweeting the terrible conditions at their hotels:

Read the article, it is hilarious.

There, corrected that. No one cares, learn a real sport rather than making up your own one and being surprised when you're the only country that takes it seriously.
Except Russia and Scandinavia, who are better than you at it anyway...
Also, the Miracle on Ice is a joke. Just figured out what it was a few days ago. It's laughable how much you care about beating Russia once, when they've smashed you hundreds of times.
And stop being so patriotic.
Other than that...

Canada topping the medal count? I think you have never seen winter olympics.
Russia will top the medal count, cant see it otherwise in their home country. With USA coming close and Germany/France/Norway to be after them.
I am looking forward mainly to ice hockey, biathlon and cross country skying.

Aah, curling. What a sport. The Scots love it for some peculiar reason.
Anyway, not a big fan of winter sports for obvious reasons but I do like that crazy event where they race down a course together. Ski-cross? I remember that woman at the last Olympics who crashed on the final jump and threw away the gold medal. Whoops.
Also, speed skating. Basically, any event that can end in a mass pile-up, I'll watch.

Yeah, Russia will top medal counts for sure. Hopefully Austria will get the gold medals that count the most though (for me), meaning Skiing, Ski Jumping and basically anything involving Skis, Snowboards & Mountains.
I actually think France will get lots of medals this time around, at least Fourcade is my guess to become the star of the olympics as well. That guy is just a beast.

Seriously? Hockey is for the winter olympics what football is for the summer olympics, it's just something that is... there.
@brewers: Yes, that's Skicross.

Exactly my thought. Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing some of the stuff we rarely get to see such as the skicross (which I loved 4 years ago).
And in Denmark the center of winter olympics is actually the curling tournaments as that is the only place we have the slightest chance of a medal (and where we got our so far only winter olympics medal). Apart from the curlers only two Danes have qualified

The Snowboard events are always kick-ass. Slopestyle Qualifiers today were sick with some huuuuge ticks in the mens comp (highlight for me being a 1400 front side).
Boardercross and Halfpipe events always bring some big moments.
Like the skiiing events aswell, Super-G Slalom + Downhill.
From a GB perspective it's mostly about Skeleton/Luge but frankly i don't really care. Only interested in the Snowboard and Skiiing

The movie was based on the 1988 Calgary Olympics where the Jamaican bobsled team showed up at the Olympics without proper equipment but were eliminated in the qualifiers.
The team is managed by Dudley Stokes, one of the original 1988 team and now general secretary of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Federationand. They have described themselves as "Cool Runnings, The Second Generation."

As to medal counts, Canada had a home field advantage last time and pulled off 16 golds I think.
A distinctive record as most golds by a host country which off-sets the the 1988 games where we became the first host nation to not win a Gold
I think that Russia has the home-field advantage chance, especially after hearing the story about the new growth-hormone developed there.
In Canada we look at how many medals the US has won and divide by 10 to determine if we had a successful Olympics. (1/10th their population).
For me, I am excited to watch the biathlon events, always cheering for Norway and Denmark here. |

majority of people I just freaking love it when people state their opinion or just think that because that's the case in their country they are facts.
Spoiler I also like that almost all of these people are american
not saying that the hockey final last time wasn't great (which was amazing I heard) but Hockey is in no way the highlight of the olympic season (and I can't tell you which is because I would say a speed skating event but I feel that's is only really populair in a select few countries)

home advantage, usually countries that hold the olympic usually get more medals then other times. the medal count will most likely be won by Russia for that reason, if not russia I think the US, Germany or Norway will win
