Tour de France Stage 15

imageshack.com/a/img822/6154/xm7o.jpg

The 15th stage of the 2013 Tour de France will see the peloton climb the famous Mont Ventoux. We should see some contenders for yellow eliminated from contention today, and Janssens needs to gain some time today before the hilly TT coming up.

In case you've forgotten, here is the pre-stage GC. All of the top 5 riders in the GC are over 30. The oldest of course being Jurgen Janssens, who is riding his last Tour de France this year.

The Race

imageshack.com/a/img802/9315/s2u6.jpg

We have a very strong breakaway today with many teams sending a strong rider to the fore of the race. Andy Schleck is in there for Radioshack. Voeckler is in there, as well as Ulissi of Lampre. There is also Devenyns, who is the teammate of the third place in GC Janssens. Izagirre is there for Euskatel, Caruso for Cannondale, and Nocentini of AG2R.

With 100 km to go, the peloton trails the seven man escape by 6 30. Time for some football, as Spain takes on Belgium in a Friendly. We will see you again for the conclusion of the stage.

imageshack.com/a/img560/5791/yx1o.jpg

Welcome back. With 25 km to go, the breakaway’s gap has been reduced to 2 24 by the Movistar-led peloton. The GC men will surely pick them up on the climb.

As the break hits the Ventoux, Voeckler flies the flag for France as he darts away from the rest of the escapees. The gap still holds at around 2 25.

Back in the peloton, White jersey holder Quintana is rapidly reducing the bunch as the peloton hits the slopes of the Ventoux.

With 15 km to go, a little group has jumped away from the peloton. The group has Nicholas Roche, Tejay Van Garderen, Laurens Ten Dam, and Thibaut Pinot. They trail the Vockler and now Schleck by 1 45. The other breakaway riders are all over the mountain in the middle of the two groups.

After a few kilometers of Movistar pacing setting, Purito has finally decided it is time to go chasing those eleven seconds.

imageshack.com/a/img819/5836/voy4.jpg

10 km to go and Purito and has left everyone except Valverde. Jansses is bridging across and it will soon be a group of three.

With 7.5 km to go, Schleck is the lone leader 40 seconds of a seven man group consisting of the top three in GC and breakaway riders.

imageshack.com/a/img823/8715/uu512.jpg

With 4 km to go, Valverde has ridden everyone off his wheel except Rodriguez. Janssens is 15 seconds back and is watching victory in his last tour slip from his grasp.

imageshack.com/a/img835/6575/u0sr.jpg

Rodriguez has cracked! Valverde has finally ridden his countryman off his wheel! Behind Janssens is dying our there and the gap is flying up.

imageshack.com/a/img824/1158/nau4.jpg

What a beautiful win for Valverde as he riders the Tour de France off his wheel! Purito crosses the line 20 seconds later utterly exhausted, and he is hooked up to an oxygen mask. Hopefully he will be fine.

Janssens finally stops the clock 1 09 after Valverde crossed the line. Froome takes fourth around 10 seconds later.

-What a day on the Mont Ventoux! It was a beautiful ride from Valverde! Purito tried his best, but he was no match for his countryman today. Jurgen Janssens finally showed signs of aging, and it will take the time trial of his life to get make into contention for the yellow jersey. Van Den Broeck had a terrible day, and he loses 4 minutes and a GC spot because of it. He is probably out of contention for the podium in Paris. See you tomorrow (not really tomorrow Friday) for stage 16

Tour de France Stage 16

imageshack.com/a/img843/2394/c9sx.jpg

The Tour de France's 16th stage features the Col de Manse and it harrowing descent to the finish. I would expect Jurgen Janssens to launch a move today, considering he prefers the shorter steeper climbs to the big mountains. Rodriguez will also have to go today before the time trial, where Valverde is superior to the others.

Race Coverage Provided by Sporza

Here is the day's breakaway. It consists of: Barguil of AG2R, Chavenal of Omega Pharma, Cunego of Lampre, Kessiakoff of Astana, and Taaramae of Cofidis. We will see you for the conclusion of the stage.

imageshack.com/a/img856/3792/zkeb.jpg

Welcome back. There has been attack of seven riders at the 30 km to go mark. The main riders are Voeckler, Uran, and Roche. They are 1 30 down on the break, and lead the peloton by 1 20.

imageshack.com/a/img843/4849/q0zs.jpg

With 20 km to go, the and the break has hit the foot of the day's big climb. They lead the chase group by 1 25, and it is another 2 minutes to the peloton.

imageshack.com/a/img203/563/wgfa.jpg

We've only been climbing for 3 kms, and the bunch has split. A group of 3 Omega riders and 6 Movistar riders have ridden away from the rest under the pacing of Costa and Velits.

imageshack.com/a/img513/7144/seok.jpg

And there goes Janssens! The Belgian makes his move and Valverde is boxed in! The polka-dot wearer has his teammate Chavenal, and the Frenchman has sat up from the break to help his leader.

imageshack.com/a/img812/4097/b4kd.jpg

Meanwhile up front, Kessiakoff has ridden away from the rest of the break. Janssens has around 30 seconds to Valverde and Rodriguez.

imageshack.com/a/img691/8206/7jmi.jpg

The Belgian has only 5 more km to ride, and the yellow jersey is nowhere in sight! It looks like Janssens will be taking a large amount of time from Valverde! Up the road, Kessiakoff has around 20 seconds to the Cunego and Barguil.

imageshack.com/a/img585/3512/8mde.jpg

A beautiful win for the Swede, and his second in this year's Tour after he taking the 4th stage, also from a solo attack. Cunego crosses the line for second ahead of Barguil.

imageshack.com/a/img801/1818/dw4f.jpg

A couple of seconds later, Jurgen Janssens crosses the line for 5th on the stage. Valverde is some 750 m back, and the Spaniard will lose a large chunk of time today.

Post Race Interviews

Jurgen Janssens

I'm very surprised and happy to see that the race officials gave me a gap of one minute over Valverde. I will hope to limit my losses in the upcoming time trail. Who knows, I might come out with a good performance, considering the amount of hills.

Fredrik Kessiakoff

I'm very happy to take this stage win, and my second in this Tour. I definitely didn't expect two stage wins when I showed up at the start line on day one.

Alejandro Valverde

Those damn officials! There was no way that there was a gap of one minute! Nothing I can about it though, I will just have to defend my jersey with one less minute to spare.

Tour de France Stage 17

imageshack.com/a/img856/2342/f07w.jpg

The seventeenth stage of the 100th Tour de France is a hilly time trial featuring two cat 2 climbs. Expect someone who can climb and descend to take the stage. The GC battle will be in full swing, as Janssens looks to pull some time back on his favorite terrain; the hills.

Race Coverage Presented by Sporza

imageshack.com/a/img163/3080/q0ik.jpg

Before we get to the live action, a few highlights of the stage so far. Maciej Bodnar
of Cannodale set the best early time at 55 32. However, he would fly down the leaderboard as the day went along.

imageshack.com/a/img809/7835/sw8t.jpg

Sylvain Chavanel was the first man to best the Polish Champion. The French Champion in the Time Trial finished with a time 53 05.

imageshack.com/a/img37/2848/q8vw.jpg

The Frenchman lasted a few hours on the top before his teammate bested him. Michał Kwiatkowski set the new best time at 52 09.

imageshack.com/a/img855/2121/q6s1.jpg

We are live at the start with polka-dot jersey wearer Jurgen Janssens. If there was ever a time trial he could do well in, this is the race for him. He needs around 1 25 on Valverde to take over the yellow jersey.

imageshack.com/a/img163/1023/3jkde.jpg

At the first split, Valverde has already lost 52 seconds to Janssens and 14 seconds to Rodriguez! The Spaniard will surely lose his yellow jersey at this rate.

imageshack.com/a/img534/9583/kqp9.jpg

Janssens goes through the second time check, and race radio cracks "New best time, Janssens: 38 18."

imageshack.com/a/img607/3907/yepr.jpg

Valverde hits the second check, and he has lost 1 47 to Janssens and 18 seconds to Rodriguez. The Belgian is in the provisional yellow jersey!

imageshack.com/a/img835/1407/osx5.jpg

Janssens crosses the line with a time of 51 57! That is good enough to unseat Kwiatkowski, and the Belgian is in position to actually win a time trial!

imageshack.com/a/img577/5876/i6wx.jpg

Purito hits the line, and he has lost 1 21 to Janssens. That puts him into third in GC for sure. A few minutes later, Valverde hits the line with a time 1 26 behind Janssens. The big question is, who will wear yellow tomorrow up Alpe D' Huez?

Post Race Interviews

Alejandro Valverde- I admit I'm disappointed to lose this much time on a course I thought suited me well. Janssens is a very good puncher, and he used those skills well on those short, steep climbs. I hope to increase my lead tomorrow on Alpe D' Huez.

Jurgen Janssens- I'm very excited to take my third stage win of this wonderful race. I am determined to take those two seconds in the next three stages and win my final race as a rider.

Joaquim Rodriguez- I'm not too concerned with losing my second spot to Janssens. All I'm concerned about is lowering that gap to whoever is in first place. I'm only 27 seconds back, and I will attack tomorrow.

We wanted something special in the 100th Tour de France, and we have got exactly that. We have three riders within 27 seconds of each other as we enter the Alps. This is anyone's Tour and this is what the organizers wanted. See you tomorrow for Alpe D' Huez.

Tour de France Stage 18

imageshack.com/a/img833/5650/hkpm.jpg

The 18th stage of the Tour de France features a double ascension of Alpe D'Huez. With the top three so close, expect a day filled with attacks.

Race Coverage Provided by Sporza

imageshack.com/a/img822/9969/1npb.jpg

Here is the day's breakaway. It contains Vannedert of Lotto, Ulissi of Lampre, Santaromita of BMC, Fredrigo of FDJ, and Nordhaug of Belkin.

imageshack.com/a/img850/8850/v793.jpg

We have got another group that is riding away from the peloton. The main riders are Rolland, Roche, and Nieve.

imageshack.com/a/img829/673/va01.jpg

Diego Ulissi takes the KOM points ahead of Nieve at the top of the Alpe. The front group is down to seven, with most of the early break dropped by the second attacking group.

imageshack.com/a/img844/434/0xdl.jpg

At the foot of the Alpe for the second time, it is still 8 riders at the front. They have 3 min to the peloton.

imageshack.com/a/img546/6645/9cdw.jpg

With 8 km to go, the gap is down to 2 minutes under the pace of Omega-Pharma Quickstep. The front group has lost Peraud and Ulissi.

imageshack.com/a/img547/3115/rz11.jpg

With 5 km to go, the top 5 in the GC are all in a group at the front along with the five who were leading three kilometers earlier.

imageshack.com/a/img845/9629/1nn8.jpg

There goes Froome! Rodriguez and Hesjedal immediately respond, but Janssens and Valverde seem content to ride at their own pace for the moment.

imageshack.com/a/img208/908/lb61.jpg

There goes Janssens chasing those 2 seconds to get into the Maillot Jaune! However, Rodriguez is 35 seconds up the road, and in the virtual lead.

imageshack.com/a/img819/6276/bxu8.jpg

Janssens has cracked Valverde with 1.5 km to go! The Spaniard is watching his yellow jersey slip from his grasp after 10 days in the lead. Rodriguez is now only 20 seconds ahead of Janssens, and Froome leads Purito by 15 seconds.

imageshack.com/a/img856/5019/uiln.jpg

A brilliant ride from Froome today, and he inches closer to the podium today after a disastrous first week. Purito manages to hold off Janssens for second. 50 seconds after the Belgian hits the line, a dejected and beaten Alejanrdo crosses the line for 4th on the stage.

Post Race Interviews

Chris Froome- I've been riding really well in the last few days, and I'm really happy that I could take the win on such a beautiful climb. I hope to sneak onto the podium in the next two mountain stages.

Jurgen Janssens- I think I rode perfectly today. I didn't go too early, like Rodriguez and I'm very happy to take over the lead in my last Tour. I would like to increase my lead tomorrow, as I don't fell like 25 seconds is a very safe lead.

Joaquim Rodriguez- I was so close today to getting the yellow jersey. I was only caught in the last 500 meters, and I think Jurgen was the strongest today. I will attack, and I will do my best to get that yellow jersey in Paris.

Alejandro Valverde- I'm most certainly disappointed to lose jersey today. I had a bad day, and I paid for it. I'm still less than a minute down, so it isn't the end of the world, but it will be hard to get yellow back. I will do my best as always.

Wow, it looks like a movie: you just come into a story during the action. Nothing previews, just starting here. Good to see Jürgen took yellow, Smile It'll be interesting how this will continue. Wink
