After the prologue we meet the sprinters today. Despite the 3 climbs today the stage is considered to be flat and proper for a sprinter showdown. Ford is the leader. Can any of the fast guys grab enough bonus time to take the yellow? We’ll see about that
Lots of interest in the first breakaway of this race. The group that sticks is composed of 5 men. They are Silvestre, Hugentobler, Sparling, Tankink and Beyer. The Portuguese is both the fastest and the best well-positioned of them
At the first sprint Silvestre naturally takes honours in front of Beyer and Sparling. They have built a 4min advantage.
As we enter the first categorized climb of the day the difference has been reduced to 2min. The ones doing the chasing are Ford’s teammates.
Despite some attacks the break crests the first summit in a pretty organized fashion lead again by Silvestre. Tankink and Beyer pass next to him. Gap is 2’24
Silvestre takes yet another mid-stage prime. The KoM jersey is probably going to be his for tomorrow. Hugentobler is 2nd and Tankink 3rd.
The pack gets a bit disorganized in this last climb. There were no falls or punctures so we’re bound to conclude that this is due to pure lack of strength. The gaps look big enough to create some concern in the teams’ cars but it’s tough to analyse the race at this point.
Sprint#2
1st. Beyer
2nd. Silvestre
3rd. Hugentobler
As we start climbing for the last KoM prime of the day the pack has a 1’56 deficit and is lead by Gdhamsi. The yellow jersey is here.
A second huge group has just rejoined and now we have a 25men group led by Privatbank who has Fonte, Athanasiades and Tanovithcii doing the work. Guess who else? Yes you’re right Maksimov along with Renshaw and Gaywood.
KoM#3
1st. Beyer
2nd. Hugentobler
3rd. Silvestre
Gap sits around 2’30. Sparling is in difficulties
20km to the finish and Maksimov’s group has been dropped again. Not only him but also the yellow jersey wearer is finding some difficulties in coping with the pack’s speed at this point.
And with 15km to go the race leader is caught by Privatbank’s locomotive. They have almost 3min deficit to the bunch! Also Goddaert is here. Up front the escapees still have 1’40. It’s going to be touch and go for them.
Crash!! Oram, Perry, O’Shea, Tzortzakis, Bartl, Othamn and Astarloza hit the deck! I thought this stage was supposed to be boring…
WWE drop back to help their leader. They are all taken by the Yellow jersey group who seems to have given in.
With 10km to go. Iberia make the junction up ahead. Mass sprint it is.
Iberia are the only ones making a train. Everyone else follows them. We have:
Gallego
Moreno
Lay
Keough
Speirs
Polivoda
Cardoso
And then a blob made of Keisse, Crespo, Ciocan, Thomas, Ben Youcef, Soupe and Renshaw.
As Gallego peels off, Moreno launches himself in kamikaze style!
We pass the kite and everyone else starts sprinting as well. Moreno still holds a good gap but he has Cardoso, Soupe, Ciocan, Keough and Nardin on his heels. Lay has completely backfired.
Moreno can already see the line but the gap is reducing at every meter…
And it’s Soupe who takes it!!! Moreno just got swallowed in the final meters, what a let down for his team. On the other hand massive effort by the French to take the first flat stage here in Utah.
Oh and what’s this?!It looks like we had a late crash by Lieuwe Westra! Gazelle’s leader may have seen his GC aspirations crushed here. He loses more than 3min to the bunch!
With this triumph we see Soupe take not only the stage but also the yellow and white jerseys. Ford retains the points classification, Silvestre moves into the polka dot kit and Kenya Airways take the team’s overall. See ya tomorrow.
