As promised I start again a story where we will make the decision together. This time, I have clearly increased the challenge to its maximum (or so I do think).
The goal remains the same as in “You are the Hero of the Game”: start with a poor team and thanks to our common decisions, become the best team in the world, win all races.
Except this time I set a few extra rules to increase the challenge:
- I will play with difficulty “Extreme”,
- I’ll start with hard career management but more importantly with a custom team,
- I’ll take maximum young i.e. minimum budget i.e. 40k EUR/ month
- I should hire only young riders (25 years old max) at the minimum salary i.e 2,000 EUR/month,
- I should hire what I think is the minimum number i.e. 12 riders (two sub-team of 6),
- I keep my sponsor for 2 years.
Doing so, I will have no strong riders to start with but hopefully some strong potential(s) that we will see evolving over the years. I will have a limited budget for year 1 and 2.

So what would our 1st season look like?
El Equipo
I took the shirt PCM Rules posted for the Partner Cup. If he reads those lines, thank you! I tried first with the winning shirt, but it didn’t look so good in the game, this shirt is really nice and recognizable, I like it a lot!
The banner, the shirt, yes you’ve guessed right, I choose to create a Colombian team. Because there were not enough good Colombian young riders or with a 2,000 EUR salary, I have decided to open the team to other Latin countries riders. And here is the squad for our first season!
As for the 1st season, I’ll go fast because I will struggle to get some results despite participating only in cat 2.2 races… Here is the calendar of the first 4 months:

Oh my looks like real tough challenge you set yourself there. To have Barguil in the squad is awesome!

I was expecting someone like George Bennet or Sam Newley in the team but Mingez will turn into a great Spanish climber.
Good luck with this mate

@ welker: I guess it will take more than 3 seasons indeed, if one day we succeed...
@ sutty: hope you will help us to go somewhere interesting
@ Shonak: Yes, I like Barguil too, can't wait to see how good he can develop
@ Jakstar: Thank you, Minguez is our best rider so far but potential is random and we will keep only the best as the team progress. Wait and see if he can be part of the adventure all the way to the Top
Here is the team that will race the first 4 months of the year:
Warren Barguil with 63 in MO, 62 in HIL and 63 in TT will be our leader.
Aureliano Dal Compare with 64 in MO can become the leader deending on the race evolution.
Salinas Quiroz with 59 in MO and 60 in HIL will be our free rider and could possible challenge for the KoM.
Peter Adamus, Francisco Talavera and Andy Casas will be team mates but can cease any opportunity might one occurs!
Key Stages
Stage 3 – Hills
Quiroz finishes 10th and last of the break but with 2’35 on the pack.
Stage 5 – Hills
More than 200km, we tried but failed to control. A strong trio got 7’25 on the pack: Craven wins the stage and takes the yellow. Alarcon is second, Romero 3rd. Both Barguil and Quiroz makes it in the chasing group. Quiroz is now 5th in GC.
Stage 10 – Hills
Another hard stage to end this Vuelta. Few riders make it to the end. Barguil ends up 11th in GC losing just a bit too much. Quiroz gave up more than 3’30 today but saved a Top 10.
Stage 1 | Jake Keough | UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling | Stage 2 | Robert Förster | UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling | Stage 3 | Dean Windsor | Rapha Condor - Sharp | Stage 4 | Robert Förster | UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling | Stage 5 | Dan Craven | Rapha Condor - Sharp | Stage 6 | Robert Förster | UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling | Stage 7 | Ignacio Sarabia Diaz | Movistar Team Ct | Stage 8 | Ignacio Sarabia Diaz | Movistar Team Ct | Stage 9 | Alexandr Pliuschin | Leopard - Trek | Stage 10 | Alexandr Pliuschin | Leopard - Trek |
Final GC

Points - Robert Förster
KoM - Gavin Mannion
Key Stages
Stage 1 - Hills
Sutherland, Rabou and Alarcon impose themselves as favorites today. Dal Compare gets a nice 4th place but was creditd with no time gap on the chasing group.
Stage 2 – Hills
Sutherland is getting the lead and Alarcon is the only one having a chance to challenge him. Barguil has built a solid lead for KoM. Dal Compare is again in a reduced chasing group.
Stage 7 – ITT
Dal Compare lost his top 5 today. Barguil had won KoM for a couple of days already. Sutherland confirms again his superiority here.
Time to admire our new equipment

Decent enough start from the team, Barguil already shows what he is capable of doing. Sutherland beastly in GC though.

@ Ian: I was hoping for a bit better, but playing in extreme proves to be more difficult than I tough. Don't know how you manage to get Henry such results
@ sutty: Warren loves the KoM, hope there will be more to come
@ Shonak: yeah, it looks like in extreme, he stats are limiting the number of surprises. Sutherland imposed a total domination as he was the strongest
Key Stages
Stage 2 - Mountain
Big competition here with Moren Bazan and Duarte and a long mountain stage (190km). In the penultiame climb, Dal Compare manages to stick to the favorites. And he is lucky enough that Moreno Bazan gets a team mates to maintain the gap in the descent and flat.
When the last climb arrives Dal Compare stays as long as possible until the attacks are launched with 4 km to go. A great 3rd place for our rider both for the stage and in GC where he gets 1’45 advantage on Sevilla who is ranking 4th.
Stage 5 – Hills
De Maar attacks from the bottom of the last climb and Dal Compare cannot follow. He will loose the wheels in the sprint and his 3rd place for 15’’.
Stage 1 | Robert Förster | UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling | Stage 2 | Javier Moreno Bazan | Movistar Team Ct | Stage 3 | Juan Pablo Forero Carreno | Colombia - Coldeportes | Stage 4 | Robert Förster | UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling | Stage 5 | Javier Moreno Bazan | Movistar Team Ct |
Final GC
1 | Javier Moreno Bazan | 18h43'54 | 2 | Fabio Andres Duarte Arevalo | + 40 | 3 | Marc De Maar | + 5'37 | 4 | Aureliano Dal Compare | + 5'51 | 5 | Oscar Sevilla Ribera | + 7'01 | 6 | Victor Hugo Pena Grisales | + 7'10 | 7 | Gregory Juel Brenes Obondo | + 7'22 | 8 | Lucas Euser | + 7'34 | 9 | Alexandr Pliuschin | + 8'41 | 10 | Ben Jacques-Maynes | + 8'56 |
So let’s anticipate a bit for the transfer period and ask you what we should do: we have 24k to be used and I doubt any 20+k salary rider will be interested by our team. So what to do with these 24k?
First question:
- How many riders in the team for next year?
Second question, I see a choice between 3 options:
- A. Recruit a strong leader (~13k) AND a second leader (~8k)
- B. Recruit a strong leader (~13k) AND a sprinter (~8k), letting the 2nd leader role to one of our current rider (hopefully stronger than today)
- C. Recruit 2 leaders (~8k each) AND a sprinter (~8k)
Which one you would pick or do you see another option?

I think C might be the most fun since then sprint stages will also be interesting for the team now and then. Otherwise A looks good too.

Would it be possible to get a sprinter that could also backup your leader?

@ sutty: yes 14'' what a pitty
@ sammyt: Nope, decent sprinters available (72-75 in our price range) are all very poor in MO even for a 2.2 race
@ all: 1 vote for B, 1.25 vote for C and 0.75 vote for A, not a clear option yet
So I'll come back to you asap with actual names for the 3 options, you then can vote for both the option and the riders
But first things first:
Key Stages
Stage 1 – Hills
Dal Compare is with the best in the final climb. Bernabeu justifies his status by winning the stage.
Stage 2 – Hills
Barguil goes in the break to compete for the KoM and in the last climb he isolates himself at the front and decides to continue alone. Bingo: 1st win for the Team.
Dal Compare manages to stay with the yellow jersey and is now 4th in GC.
Stage 1 | David Bernabeu Armengol | Andalucia Caja Granada | Stage 2 | Warren Barguil | EL EQUIPO | Stage 3 | Sergio Miguel Ribeiro Vieira | Barbot - Efapel |
Final GC 1 | David Bernabeu Armengol | 14h06'15 | 2 | Victor Hugo Pena Grisales | + 36 | 3 | Radoslav Rogina | + 1'43 | 4 | Aureliano Dal Compare | + 1'46 | 5 | Sergio Sousa Ferreira | + 2'29 | 6 | Warren Barguil | + 3'43 | 7 | Javier Chacon Quesada | + 3'49 | 8 | Adrian Palomares Villaplana | s.t. | 9 | José Alberto Benitez Roman | + 4'20 | 10 | Matija Kvasina | + 4'22 |
Points - Warren Barguil
Mountain - Warren Barguil
Key Stages
Stage 2 – Hills
Quiroz gets in the break. He is too poor a sprinter to hope for anything, but the yellow jersey as he is the best placed in GC. He’ll manage to save a Top 3 for 2’’ in the final ITT.
Stage 1 | Kevyn Ista | Accent.jobs - Willems Veranda's | Stage 2 | Gil Suray | Lotto - Bodysol Pôle Wallon | Stage 3 | Kevyn Ista | Accent.jobs - Willems Veranda's | Stage 4 | Francesco Van Coppernolle | Jong Vlaanderen - Bauknecht | Stage 5 | Kevyn Ista | Accent.jobs - Willems Veranda's |
Final GC 1 | Kevyn Ista | 17h39'31 | 2 | Dmytro Grabovskyy | + 1'52 | 3 | Salinas Quiroz | + 2'00 | 4 | Sebastian Lander | + 2'02 | 5 | Gil Suray | + 2'15 | 6 | Caleb Fairly | + 2'18 | 7 | Yoeri Havik | + 2'22 | 8 | Kévin Van Dyck | + 2'24 | 9 | Aureliano Dal Compare | + 2'25 | 10 | Erki Pütsep | + 2'27 |
Points - Kevyn Ista
Mountain - Peter Adamus
