[Mini] Tour d'Andorra - Stage 5
Gustavovskiy
Last chance for anyone to break Bajadali. There are no KoM primes or intermediate sprints. There’s only the stage and GC to fight for.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/stage5.jpg

Today we have a circuit composed of 3 climbs to be completed 3 times. That’s a total of 9 climbs. The lengths of the mountains to be tackled vary from 15km to 8km and they’re all monstrously tough.

As we get under way, it gets clear that 7-eleven will try a more direct approach setting themselves as the pack leaders.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-1.jpg

Also unlike the previous days the break forms rather easily. And what a break! 15 riders, some of them quite familiar, are willing to commit to a long distance bid for the win. They are: Benucci (Miche), Sakellaridis (Airgo Airways), Perichon (SFR), Banihammad (Fuji), Pulido (America Móvil), Yanes (Eroski), Magalhães (Millenium), Shpilevski (Katusha), Obiang (Standard Bank), Wilman (Zoegas), Blekevicius (Kalev), McNally (Node4-Giordana), Mercado (iBanesto.com), Safarzadeh (KazMunayGas) and Huizenga (Van Merksteijn). They build a 4’15 advantage in 10km.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-2.jpg

The gap peaks around 8’45 at the end of the first circuit. A grupetto has started to emerge as we now see Rucanor and Dexia commanding the peloton. Rodrigues and Cohnen must be feeling good today.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-3.jpg

The descents all look quite dangerous which is proven by Rodriguez Parra’s (Coldeportes) crash. Fortunately for him and his team nothing comes out of it as he manages to recover. But the GC contenders are now advised.

As we start tackling the last third of the race, the gap has been reduced to three pretty manageable minutes. You start to feel the tension in the pack. Bajadali as always is showing his colours at the front. Only 70 riders are present in the bunch at this point.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-4.jpg

We crest the first summit by the last time and still no attacks. The gap remains 3min.

Reaching the penultimate climb the first attacks appear. It’s Bonnafond (BNP Paribas), Leontenko (Commonwealth Bank), Casar (Peugeot), Rubiano Chavez (Coldeportes) and Svab (LKT).

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-5.jpg

7-eleven’s Kirsch reels them in in a blink of an eye though.

Rubiano Chavez doesn’t conform to this and launches himself again.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-6.jpg

Another set of attacks goes after him. Bonnafond and Casar again with Taberlay (Commonwealth Bank) and Orozco (Coldeportes). Colombia seems to have saved everything for today. With all these attacks the gap to the front group is melted down in a pretty fast pace.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-7.jpg

But they are all brought back by each other including Rubiano Chavez and Perichon who was dropped from the leading group. The front men have less than 2min now as Banihammad and McNally have lost contact as well

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-8.jpg

More attacks come but the mountain finishes early enough to concede Kirsch the chance to catch everyone. The chasing duo is about to get caught as we enter the descent. 1’20 to the front.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-9.jpg

Sabido tries a surprise attack in the descent

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-10.jpg

But he goes nowhere. The road is about to go up again.

And as soon as that happens Swift-Metcalfe (Node4-Giordana), Schofmann (Miche), Svab (LKT), Orozco, Bonnafond and Rubiano Chavez try their luck yet again.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-11.jpg

But they can’t even get a gap!

Meanwhile at the front Mercado pounces. Magalhães is the only one trying to follow. The rest of the group is in trouble. 17km to the finish now.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-12.jpg

Orozco makes another go. Where has all this Colombian prowess been the rest of the week?

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-13.jpg

He quickly gets the wheel of the fading early attackers, but the pack is just behind them.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-14.jpg

Aaaaaaaaaaaand they’re caught…

But wait a minute a group of 4 seems to have found the right moment it’s Sabido, Sibila Romero (iBanesto.com), Orozco and Taberlay. Can they make this stick?

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-15.jpg

The summit has been reached meanwhile. No major gaps have been created. Only the descent now to be the decider. Here’s the situation:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-17.jpg

Mercado – 30’’ - Safarzadeh, Obiang, Yanes, Magalhães and Blekevicius- 48’’ Sabido’s group – 15’’ - Pack

There are 12km to the end of this race.

Predictably the last attacks were caught, but now we have Mazet on the run!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-18.jpg

Casar follows the same strategy.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-19.jpg

Back at the front Mercado is about to enter last km

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-20.jpg

And he wins it. Brilliant triumph from the Spaniard. He had already tried previously but now he made it count in a bold move. Kudos to him.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-21.jpg

The pack comes shortly after losing a few seconds to the myriad of groups that had formed in the meantime. None of them able to endanger the ever safe yellow jersey.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/andorra/and5-22.jpg

Andrew Bajadali may have benefited from the lack of selection in the last stages, but you have to give him credit for his behavior on the road. Congratulations to he and his team
