Bajadali remains numero uno in the GC. Let’s see if today’s Ordino-Arcalis agrees with that.
We have reached Coll de Canes, our first summit of the day, and no break just yet. Schofmann (Miche) beats Pulido (America Móvil) and Mercado (iBanesto.com) to take it. Huizenga (van Merksteijn) was fourth which is enough for him to recover the polka dot jersey.
Mercado takes the opportunity and distances himself in the descent.
Five men bridge up to him near the sprint. Mercado is first Banihammad (Fuji) takes 2nd and Lesvenan (BNP Parisbas) 3rd. Wilman (Zoegas), Bulgarelli (Millenium) and Trautmanis (Kalev) make the rest of the break. More riders try to leave the pack who rests about 2min behind Mercado.
Ben Matoog (Argos Airways), Arekejev (Katusha), Pulido (America Móvil) and Cappelle (Elextrabel) also join the break. Mercado is the best positioned in the Gc with +3min. But he is a talented climber so look out for him. The advantage has grown to 3’30
As we pass Port de Collada de Tosses the gap has widened to 7’30. Cappelle is 1st, ahead of Banihammad and Trautmanis.
.
The gap peaks at 9’00. 7-eleven and Rucanor do the work in the pack. The yellow jersey is well positioned and looks pretty well.
The intermediate sprint is won by Mercado, Banihammad and Lesvenan follow. The descent has proven to be fruitful for the pack. The advantage has been reduced to 4min.
Meanwhile as he has done yesterday, Mazet (SFR) goes for another mid-stage attack
We approach the last intermediate sprint when Leontenko (Commonwealth Bank), Montiel (Coldeportes) and Svab (LKT) try to getaway. Noval (Eroski) follows shortly after.
That doesn’t stick but Schofmann (Miche) goes after with Svab and Montiel.
Mercado proves he the seriousness of his escapade by winning yet another sprint. Banihammad and Wilman make 2nd and 3rd. Mazet has already joined the break. 2’30 is the distance to the pack. Schofmann’s group has a 50’’ advantage to the bunch. Collet de Montaup (1st cat) is about to be tackled.
With 6,5km to the top the groups have already merged! Schofmann, Pulido and Svab made quite a fast climb. On the other direction goes Banihammad who loses contact. The difference is 2’45.
Schofmann makes the rest of the climb seem like a formality to him. He absolutely demolishes the group and powers his way through to the top. Pulido and Mercado are the only ones daring to follow him. At the summit he waves them goodbye. Can this be the prelude for an epic win?
In the pack Bajadali himself does the chasing, all of his team has already been dropped. The peloton has been reduced to 46 riders. He is able to catch the rest of the breakaway but he must be worried about Schoffmann surely. As they are about to start down-hilling the gap is 2’30’’
Despite the farewell the trio get together in the lead up to the final climb. The gap has shrunk to 1min. Only Arcalis awaits them now.
The cat and mouse games start at the front. Mercado is the first to accelerate. Schofmann follows but Pulido gets dropped. In the pack Dyadichkin (KazMunayGaz) and Leontenko are the first to try something, they get nothing though.
10km left and the climb gets in its tougher segment: 10 % gradient here. Schofmann digs in and tries to leave his companions behind. On the back Bajadali has been pulling since the beginning of the climb! Where are his team mates? The gap to Schofmann remains one minute.
Diyadichkin, Leontenko, Casar, Nose (Node4-Giordana) and Taberlay (Commonwealth Bank) try to get clear as Pulido and Mercado are swept over.Dyadichkin though is the only one to get close to Schofmann with 8km to go.
They join forces at the front. Next serious attack comes from Sabido (Millenium), Shiferaw (Standard Bank) and Cohnen (Rucanor). Bajadali sticks to his never-ending pulling tactic. It’s super effective!
A few moments after another group has a go at it: Saedi Tanha (KazMunayGaz), Pulido (America Móvil) and Sibila Romero (iBanesto.com). None get a gap. 5km and 30’’ to the leading duo.
Taberlay, Cohnen and Matzbacher (Kalev) try as well with 4km. No success.
3km to the finish line and Bajadali keeps trying to control things, but he looks like he is starting to fade. The gap has grown to 1min again.
Pulido, Mate, Chu and Montiel try before the last km,all to no avail. Final kilometer in sight for the front trio of Schofmann, Dyadichkin and Didi.
What’s this? Dyadichkin seems to have finally broken Schofmann’s resistance.
But Schofmann recovers has we’re about to enter the barriers they’re side by side
Schofmann opts for the inside route
And it’s he who takes the victory. Unbelievable job from the Austrian. He finally gives reason to the ones pointing him as #1 favourite. He doesn’t take the jersey here but he definitely has made himself noticed. Also he takes the KoM from Safadarzeh.
