Tour Alsace - Stage 6
SportingNonsense
A big stages lies ahead, and the race is still up for grabs.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-1.jpg

A break of 2 went clear: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Porsev and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/abc_zps288913e0.png Taubel.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-2.jpg

They fought over the King of the Mountains points, while Magna picked up all major points behind - Demare taking 3rd in the intermediate sprint, then their domestiques picking up KoM points as there was no interest peloton, not from either of Olsson or Trosino, the joint KoM leaders.

On the Cat 2 climb, some 40km from the finish, 3 climbers attacked the peloton. i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh498/Hiiam2412/Barclayskenmicro_zps52dc0de5.png Ndbri, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Gonzalo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Gallego. It's a bit of a gamble with so much flat in between here and the final climb of the day.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-3.jpg

Porsev won this climb as the break just held off the 3 counter attackers. It is not enough to secure the KoM jersey though - that goes to Taubel, since the Austrian had picked up 10 points earlier in the race as well.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-4.jpg

The two groups came together, and Ndbri was able to win the intermediate sprint. The lead peaked at 2 minute behind, but there was further action in the peloton with the likes of Marzano, Mestre, Larsson, Martinez and Feillu all attacking despite being on minor slopes.

Magna-Ryanair controlled everything though, preventing any attacks working, and bringing back the breakaway prior to the main steep climbing of the day - a wasted effort for Ndbri in particular then.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-5.jpg

Talabardon is the first to attack, followed by Rodriguez, Ndbri and Rudaskov. Magna keep them in check, but when Marzano attacks Rohregger knows that he has to respond!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-6.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ken_zps45e45b07.png Marzano is a level above the rest today though, and gets a gap alone!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-7.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Menchov now attacks, and looks to close down the gap.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-8.jpg

But the Russian cannot sustain the same pace, and falls away again. Its a 24 second lead for Marzano with 3.5km to go.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-9.jpg

Just 8 are left in the chasing group: Rohregger, Mestre, Martinez, Menchov, Naibo, Larsson, Rodriguez and Talabardon.

That is further reduced when Rodriguez and Talabardon are dropped, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Rohregger engages diesel mode in a bid to close Marzano down.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-10.jpg

And he does it! Fantastic climbing. He doesn't even need the help of teammate Naibo, who has done well to make this elite group.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-11.jpg

1.2km to go and i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh498/Hiiam2412/Barclayskenmicro_zps52dc0de5.png Martinez fancies the stage. Off he goes!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-12.jpg

But Rohregger draws back up to him, can anything stop him today?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-13.jpg

It seems not, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Thomas Rohregger wins the stage to seal a well deserved Tour Alsace triumph.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-14.jpg

Martinez takes 2nd place, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/vtf_zps1d97281a.png Larsson wins his battle with Mestre to take 3rd on the stage and also in GC. Missing those time bonuses is even more annoying for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Mestre, as he falls behind Martinez in GC as well.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als6-15.jpg

2nd in GC goes to Marzano, who went for broke with a promising looking move, but just couldnt beat Rohregger today. Menchov will be disappointed to not figure strongly enough in his 6th overall, while Naibo did very well to get 7th on both the stage and in GC - and it is enough also to help Magna-Ryanair steal the teams classification win from under the nose of Kenya Airways.

Lasca takes the Points jersey, Taubel the KoM jersey - great race for Austria, and Dahlberg is the best young rider.
