PT Rankings Update

As well as the addition of the Tour of Northern Europe and Copenhagen-Malmo TTT, I have had to fix some errors from the previous rankings. The 5 One day races after Liege-Bastogne-Liege and before Copenhagen-Malmo had mistakenly been awarded Monument ranking points, while I have also checked that team totals were correct for all races - an issue that came up recently in the PCT standings.

The standings are definitely correct now though, and with 3 races to play for, some very tense battles await.

Wikipedia lead by just 264 points as for once, the battle looks set to go right down to the wire. Can the American squad hold on, faced with a chase from two of the least active ProTour teams - Pearl Adidas and former winner Koenigsegg. The Tour of Tasmania could be critical, as Taylor Phinney will set out to try to put his team over the line.

Milka are a safe 4th, with UBS edging clear in 5th but Vesuvio - who have (unfortunately!) been the lowest scoring team since the Tour de France, bar Santander, have been caught by the chasing trio of Lotto-Cervelo, Pokerstars.com and Simply Red Bull. 3 ProTour debutants all looking good for a Top 10 finish.

Not far behind them is another incredibly close fight for 10th and beyond. Festina are just in front, but barely ahead of Aker-MOT and Project 1t4i.

Those who havent kept pace with this midfield pack are finding themselves thrust into danger. Santander have slid out of the Top 10 but look like they will just have done enough to scrape through. Wiggle can't be so confident right now, after a great season start, they have slipped to less than 300 points clear of safety. They have to really perform well now else will be right in the battle below. Simone Ponzi is in all remaining races though, and that could be crucial.

The big battle at the moment though, remains Team B&O and Team Puma-SAP. Team B&O made the biggest pre-season gamble by opting to use money on training, and therefore not even spend 3 million of their salary cap - and that might have paid off if not for a cruel turn of events at the Tour de France for Pluchkin. Since then it has seemed inevitable that Puma would overtake them, and indeed they did do so after the Flat Classic and Colombia. But B&O have fought back over the last 5 races, topped by a 113 point gain at the Tour of Northern Europe, and they have move back into that safe 16th spot! Next race brings the opportunity back to Puma though. A victory for Bennati there could still be a killer blow.

In the final 3 spots, Heineken, Bacardi and Venchi can pretty much start planning for PCT - but Heineken in particular have fought hard over recent races to ensure they will not end up far from safety at least. And who knows, if Pozzato can win in Praha versus low Puma/B&O scores, it might not be over for them.

Racing in the TTT did not do Taylor Phinney much good as his team could not support him, but with Tasmania to come versus Boonen and Bewley's Praha, it is looking good for the Individual title. Newly crowned World Champion Edvald Boasson Hagen is the only ride in the Top 20 to participate in the last few races, as he closes out the year in his Norwegian champions kit. If he got really lucky, he could even win all 3!

Hmm, great position for SRB to be in, but it could be tight for us to hold onto a top 10 given that we do not have great prospects in the last three races.

Lombardy we will likely be low scorer baring a fluke. In the other two we do have a hope of something Cancellara goes to Tasmania and JvH sprints in Praha.

I'm really thrilled to be in the Top-5, I would have never expected that in the beginning of the season. With leaders in all the remaining races, it should be secure as well.

That's more than you get for 9th place in Praha. I really really hope Praha is a more standard flat classic, but the profile doesn't make me trust it at all.
Let's just hope Heineken doesn't get back into the fight again as well with another Pozzato surprise...

ToNE was ridiculously shit for us, and B&O scoring so much there wasn't on anyone's plan.

Just as last season now. Bennati has to get us above the cut, but Croket's Faso of 2012 will be VDB's Tasmania+Lombardia now.

Or a dramatic change of storyline: Ponzi and Ignatiev underperform and Wiggle goes down...

Did not expect to be there after getting a better team than last year. Only real regret is letting Ricco ride 2 GT's, but that was clearly not the only problem.

50 over the course of several months obviously.

Maxing riders and creating competitive rosters while staying within salary cap and budget, trying to get a realistic approach for both by calculating possible wages and transfer fees with experiences gained from past seasons threads and rankings.

Basically that. I have 27 satisfying rosters right now.

Woah! That fight for 10th place is just amazing. Top 10 is a goal, and we need Boasson Hagen to perform his best in the remaining races to succeed.

Though, rumour has it he was heard shouting "Noch ein Bier, bitte" too many times in Stuttgart after the World Championships. But the team trusts him anyway, and we can't really say he doesn't deserve those beers.

Team B&O needs a "hilly" race in the Czech Republic, which isn't out of the question. Riders like Ponzi and Boasson Hagen should at least try something. That's at least my hope, as it's our only chance at a great result.

This is probably the time when you see just how decisive Pluchkin's unlucky loss of points in Tour de France is. Add 600ish points and B&O are inside the top 10 with three races to go.

Thinking of my post in the C-M thread, 56 points in favour of B&O certainly makes it more exciting than 8 points in favour of Puma. Exciting stuff.

I do believe Wikipedia must be somewhat safe at the very top. 264 points to Pearl with arguably the biggest favourite racing in their colors in Tasmania. But with a big score in Prague for one of the two chasers it's wide open again.

Thanks for the update! It's certainly very nice to have close fights all over the table.

2 transfer seasons full of talent hunting were enough. If I manage to replace my ageing leaders, my age average is somewhere around 25, and that's definitely the lowest I can go before being not competitive enough.
If we stay PT, 3 or 4 signings should do.

I mean if I were to sign no new riders and stick to my selling plans, there would be no trainable main stat higher than 74, all better riders are either too old or not eligible yet!

Well, of course I try to find solutions to fit Herklotz in somewhere, but only if he is a stage race talent, I have plenty of puncheur ones

Interesting.

However, with the squads I'll be fielding in the coming races, I believe I should be secure. Even if my top leader doesn't perform, my second is stronger than some other teams' leaders.

Caruso came 2nd in Lombardi once. Ignatiev and Ponzi double up for the three dayer, and the flat race, well, it's anyone's guess!

Plus I have no real qualms about demoting, I'd keep my squad as it is, rid myself of Ignatiev (after a few tears) as he's pretty much a dead weight of salary cap, and go about demolishing the PCT.

I have a bigger cushion left than I expected at this point. I would feel a little more comfortable, but for being chased by the likes of Bakelants and Trofimov.

Very interesting fight at the bottom. Levi's certainly had a bit of a resurgence, but still needs something of a miracle. All of the managers involved seem very capable of bouncing back up.
