The first mountain stage caused some gaps, and now to cause more, Stage 5 is a 17km individual time trial. This will favour the stage racers, but hinder the pure climbers in the field.
A strong early start was Ludovic Bret. His time of 25'37 was tough to beat.
Estonian Gert Joeaar came close, just 1 second down.
Also 1 second down was Daan Rijntjes - despite being 1 second up on Bret at the checkpoint.
A little bit slower - but not far off - were Hacecky, Marque and Athanasiades.
Of the 10 riders who started the stage 1'05 behind Marzano, one of the fastest was Yasmani Martinez. 4 seconds slower than leader Bret, it is enough to keep him in 5th overall.
But with a blistering ride, the best time triallist in the field duly delivered. Gustav Larsson took the lead, 11 seconds faster than Bret, as he aims for a podium position overall.
It was damage limitation for Mestre after a strong climb yesterday. He loses 35 seconds to Larsson, and just slips 3 seconds below him on GC.
Austrian time trial champion Thomas Rohregger has his eyes on the leaders jersey, with only an 8 second deficit to make up. His time is 12 seconds down on Larsson - 5th on the stage just behind the 3 best early starters.
That just leaves Marzano. 43 seconds slower than Larsson, 31 behind Rohregger.
So Kappa lose the race lead for the first time in the race, as Rohregger takes over! A 23 second lead now on Marzano means the Italian will need more than just time bonuses on the upcoming queen mountain stage.

Ebsen beat Dahlberg by 1 second today, not quite enough in this internal Vattenfall battle.
