Tour Alsace - Stage 2
SportingNonsense
Stage 2 is much harder than Stage 1, and should see some gaps start to form.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als2-1.jpg

But it is only hard if the riders choose to make it so. No attacks on either of the day's 2 big climbs early on. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ken_zps45e45b07.png Kappa relay as they have the race leader, and they mop up a lot of KoM points!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als2-2.jpg

Demare won the first intermediate sprint, ahead of Lasca and Giacoppo.

Finally attacks! On KoM #3 it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Gallego, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/vtf_zps1d97281a.png Dahlberg, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Olsson and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Cardoso.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als2-3.jpg

Olsson had managed to be well placed earlier in the stage to pick up some KoM points, but his hopes to use the later climbs to take that jersey were undone by only taking 3rd at both the 3rd and 4th KoMs. It takes him to 20 points - but Kappa's stagiare Trosino has 22 points, and is the first King of the Mountains of the race.

These 4 attackers have aspirations for the stage, but the peloton are keeping them close.

4 becomes 3 as Gallego is dropped, and they lead the peloton by 1 minute with 20km to go.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als2-4.jpg

2 climbs left, a shorter one followed by a longer - before a descent into the finish. And already on the shorter one we see an attack from the peloton - it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/abc_zps288913e0.png Kirchen.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als2-5.jpg

He catches the break but can't stay away from the peloton, as the race moves on to the longer climb. So the Luxembourg veteran tries again. The breakaway trio Dahlberg, Olsson and Cardoso all to follow - as do GC riders i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Rodriguez Oliver and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ken_zps45e45b07.png Marzano!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als2-6.jpg

Persistence pays off, and Kirchen has a gap! He carries a handy 40 second solo lead into the final 10 kilometers.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als2-7.jpg

Who is going to chase? Magna and Risa lead the reduced peloton of 43 riders. In theory it would be a good finish for Magna's Demare, except he is having a bad day and is amongst the dropped. Gap still 40 seconds with 5km to go.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als2-8.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Risa-Ergon are lining up Brice Feillu it seems, with Ziesler as his lead out man. Race leader Lasca follows as few others take an interest. The gap is dropping, but so is the distance to go. Can Kirchen do it?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als2-9.jpg

Yes he can! A well deserved stage win.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/als2-10.jpg

Alas, no time gap gain for him as the peloton really closed him down in the closing stages. Feillu takes 2nd, ahead of Failli, Rodriguez and Lasca - who defends the race lead.
