Jelajah Malaysia - Stage 3
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-1.jpg

After yesterday’s tough mountain stage we return to the flats for what is on paper a sprint stage. The major complication comes in the large category 1 climb inside the first 40 kilometres that might hurt some legs. There are 16 mountain points on offer here – not enough to take the mountain jersey on its own but still an attractive prospect.

We get some early attacks today from several names. Things are started by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Gregory Hugentobler.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-2.jpg

Other names look to join him:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Kristian Dyrnes
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Jonathon Tiernan-Locke
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Zico Waeytens
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Chan Jae Jang
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Philip Lindau
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Michael Vink (9 mountain points)

However, not all of these riders can get away and so our break is formed by:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Gregory Hugentobler
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Kristian Dyrnes
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Jonathon Tiernan-Locke
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Chan Jae Jang

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-3.jpg

This group forms at the base of the climb and it becomes clear at the summit that none of them are really going to fight for the points. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Jang leads the group over ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Hugentobler. With only four riders in this group there are still some extra points on offer. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Seo attacks out of the bunch and beats i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Bakhin to the summit to mop these up. This brings i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Seo to a total of 12, still not close to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Rusli’s 20.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-4.jpg

The gap at the top is 8’20” with 127km still to ride. The guys up front don’t contest the sprints as none of them stand to gain from the time bonuses. Seeing the gap beyond 8 minutes several teams start to work – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png MTN, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png BNCR and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Iberia chief amongst them.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-5.jpg

With these teams putting a real effort in the gap comes down. With 70km to go the gap is down to 5’08” and with 20km to go the gap stands at only 1’36”. The break are still working together well but time is running out.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-6.jpg

With 10km remaining the gap is down just under 30” and the infighting in the break is started by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Tiernan-Locke. Everyone is able to follow him, however, and the gap holds steady for the moment.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-7.jpg

But of course they are inevitably all brought back. With 7.5km remaining it is clear that we are going to get a bunch sprint. Two trains start to line up for this one. On the right we have:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Rodas
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Day
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Abdallah

On the left we have:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Gallego
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Anton Martin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Lay
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Polivoda

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-8.jpg

The early climb combined with the long chase clearly has taken its toll on some riders here as both of the trains are down to their final lead-out rider with 3km remaining to the line. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Salleh jumps on to the back of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Polivoda and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Jang gets on to the back of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Abdallah.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-9.jpg

But a disaster as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Abdallah loses the wheel of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Day. He is really struggling here!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-10.jpg

Now the sprint opens up! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Lay launches his bid for the line. Coming from behind there are a lot of other sprinters. With the collapse of the MTN train it is a real free-for-all. Moving up are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Sohrabi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Breen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Jang
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Salleh
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Avery
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Murray

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-11.jpg

With 800m to go i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Sohrabi hits the front with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Breen close to him. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Lay is struggling to come past his lead-out i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Anton Martin.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-12.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Sohrabi opens up a gap. He was 2nd on stage one – can he do better here? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Polivoda is struggling for space.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-13.jpg

Suddenly on the right hand side of the road there is a charge from both of the Cadbury sprinters, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Avery and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Murray. They are coming much faster than anyone else, can they do this?!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-14.jpg

Yes! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Clinton Avery pulls out an absolutely massive surprise by taking the bunch sprint!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel3-15.jpg

In second place is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Salleh, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Murray makes it two Cadbury riders on the podium – a huge result for that team. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Sohrabi can only manage fourth but that is enough for him to pull on the points jersey. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Porsev comes from nowhere to round out the top five. Climber i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Moreno clearly takes advantage of his strong day yesterday by managing sixth. Best young rider i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Alizadeh is in seventh. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Speirs, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Jang and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Breen round out the top ten.
