Jelajah Malaysia - Stage 2
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-1.jpg

After a late course change in this somewhat cursed race, we are ready to get going with stage 2. The course takes in two separate climbs. The first is a short category 2, giving out 10 mountian points to the winner. The second climb is a HC rated monster which gives out 20 to the first over the top. Following this there is a long descent to the finish. Our favourites for today are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Moreno, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Menchov and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Alizadeh.

Here is the profile of the main climb today:

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-2.jpg

Three riders attack at the start of the day and those are teh three who get away to form teh break. They are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Aleksei Saramotins
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Giacomo Scarponi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Will Routley

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-3.jpg

Before we even reach the first sprint point the gap reaches its maximum of only 4’30”. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png PrivatBank seem absolutely intent on controlling this, probably for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Mestre though remember that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Polivoda is in yellow so they are also obliged to do some of this work.

The sprint comes around with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Saramotins winning ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Routley and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Scarponi. The gap is now down to 3’25” with the first climb still nowhere even close.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-4.jpg

Indeed before the first climb the catch is made. There are still 88km to ride, with plenty of that uphill. Hopefully with no one out front the road will be clear for the leaders to make this really interesting!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-5.jpg

The bunch is happy to just ride up the first climb at a fairly sedate pace and with 2km to go it looks like no one wants to do anything here. Thankfully though there is an attack. The three riders are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Bakhin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Sarmiento
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Masuda

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-6.jpg

The attack doesn’t get far, however, and it is reeled back in. However, others decide that this is a good opportunity to strike for the mountain points on offer so the next round of attackers are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Seo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Kastrantas (3 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Bakhin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Vink (5 mountain points)

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-7.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Vink is looking to defend his jersey here. The 10 points would certainly take some of the pressure off him and would mean he would only need a decent finish over the HC climb rather than winning it.

Unfortunately for him he isn’t the best climber so it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Bakhin who comes over ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Kastrantas and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Seo. This puts i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Kastrantas in the provisional lead in that competition with 11 points. However, the next climb offers 20 points to the leader so there is still a lot to fight for.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-8.jpg

All of the riders sit up over the top here but in fact i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Vink is so naturally good downhill that he speeds ahead of everyone without even trying and pulls out a decent gap. A gentle drag follows this which leads to the main part of the following climb.

It is on this drag that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Sarmiento goes solo.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-9.jpg

Behind him there are attacks from several riders, but they can’t bridge up to him:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Meintjes
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Rusli
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Seo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Bakhin

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Sarmiento catches up to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Vink and they start to work together. They have 40” on the 4 chasers and another 20” on the bunch.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Jel2-24.jpg

Once again, however, the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png PrivatBank boys put in a huge effort and succeed in bringing the attack back. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Polivoda is still sitting comfortably around the front. The bunch is thinning down slightly, with only 78 riders remaining there.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-10.jpg

Just before the main part of the big climb of the day starts we get four more riders attacking, this time all together:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Sarmiento
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Eibegger
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Masuda
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Rusli

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-11.jpg

The four riders work together well and their gap grows to 45”. Seeing this we get a Spanish alliance forming as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Iberia and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Barcelona both send their strongest domestiques forward to control this attack. This starts to shred yet more riders from the bunch.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-12.jpg

With 7.5km to the summit the gap has in fact grown to 1’10” and this attack is looking really serious. Clearly, however, this is not because the peloton isn’t chasing hard – the bunch is now down to 51 riders.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-13.jpg

Up front i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Rusli and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Sarmient ride away from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Eibegger and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Masuda. With 3km to go these two are looking incredibly tough.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-14.jpg

All the work from the two Spanish teams is clearly worth something as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Polivoda cracks! The guys in the bunch now have even more to fight for. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Mestre is now the only rider from his team in the bunch.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-15.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Eibegger and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Masuda are now caught not far from the summit. The gap to the two leaders is at 1’06” and while it hasn’t increased, it isn’t coming down quickly.

There is now an attack from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Bakhin, who is after the mountain points given that he took the 10 on the previous climb.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-16.jpg

His attack is caught, however, and the tough pace combined with the two attackers still out the front means that none of the favourites really want to give it a go. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Rusli goes over the top first without a fight, and so he will take the mountain jersey tonight. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Sarmiento is in second place.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-19.jpg

Their gap has come down though and is now at only 31 seconds! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Yeung sneaks up to take the 12 mountain points and then the next rider over was i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Moreno, who was up doing the pacing to bring the gap back. A 26km descent is ahead of them, can they bring the attackers back?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-17.jpg

Yes they can! It only takes a few kilometres to bring the two attackers back and, just as they are about to re-enter the bunch, there is an attack! The attacker is a real surprise name - i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Esquivel. He is one of BNCR’s leaders and, most importantly, a fabulous descender!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-18.jpg

With 15km remaining the gap is out to 36”. The bunch is down to 24 riders and no team really seems to have enough firepower to hunt the lone leader.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-20.jpg

The gap starts to stretch, and with 10km to go it is at 51”. With only 1km remaining the gap has extended to almost a minute! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Deiber Esquivel looks certain to take this now.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-21.jpg

And indeed he does!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-22.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Moreno wins the bunch sprint and will wish that his domestiques were better descenders. One of the other favourites i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Alizadeh rounds out the podium.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/Jel2-23.jpg
