Continental Cobblers normally have to go to Africa for their end of season tough man fix. However given the leeway organisers of the Tour of Northern Europe have got with the fabled Northern France sections of cobblestones, a one day classic finishing in the town of Arenburg has been organised.
There has been some limit then to the amount of cobbled sectors that have been able to be squeezed in, we do have four quite lengthy sections in the last 30 klicks which you would expect most of the action to take place.
As you may expect the lovers of the cobbled stuff have all gathered for this one with the two headline acts Baugnies (HTC) and Vanspreybrouck (Bpost) leading their teams against the usual suspects. Results have been shared around one again this year, so it is a case of who knows what may happen.

Boom and Vantomme hopefully can hang on here to finish strong. A top10 would be nice.
I think I had to fill their race days in the end and due to my Europe Tour goal this race suited the most.
It might also be the only race for my stagiare Grand I think. He might nevertheless become a bigger part of my squad next season as he has some potential.
If my leaders don`t hang on I am afraid of the rankings afterwards when Bpost is scoring big times here. |

It has been a long time since the Northern Classics end, unfortunately so did AMEX's consistency. A return to the cobbles and some solid results should help the American Squad avoid relegation.
Bernhard Eisel support by Matti Breschel will lokk to be in the final finishing group where they can use their sprinting skills to advantage.
This is the first race in a long time that the media think we have any chance at all. Bpost and HTC look to be the bookie favs but AMEX has always been in the mix on the cobbled races. We hope this will not be the exception.

Okay make or break time here. Anything less than a podium and several riders in the top 20 would be a huge failure. I'm counting on this and Faso to put me over the line.

This could be decisive for the promotion battle. The pressure to perform should be on Bpost's side this time.
As for my team, a top10 would already be a terrific result, but it's probably too much to ask.

This will probably not go well for Boeing. They boys seem off the boil now and we couldn't win when the odds were in our favor... Thomas obviously for us and hopefully Grashev can give him nice support
As usual Bpost and HTC to fight for the win. Hard to call between them, but it will take something unique to beat the two teams on home roads

Oh dear...
Welcome PCT 2014. Good luck in the PT, Count.
Congrats to Amex obviously. Huge way to score for staying in PCT. |

Thought Amex was safe for some time, but this confirms it. UPC me thinks too.
Since it ended in sprint as expected really, good scoring by BPost as well, although I wouldn't say roturn it definitely make sures of their promotion at all. Faso will be key.
As for my team, nice effort, didn't really need points so preety happy.

It's unfortunate that the cobbles weren't as selective as one could have expected. Although with Vantomme in the front group I was expecting to see a better result for Rothaus. With Bpost not failing to deliver, the future looks darker for roturn.
Congratulations to Mhaley. His team must be the bluntest example of dichotomy in the history of the Man-Game. Outstanding in the cobblestones, terrible in everything else. You make sure you keep both Eisel and Breschel for next season mate.
Also thanks Smowz. Despite the lack of a Prio - Porto victory your reports maintain their standards

It`s actually quite funny that I expected my team have the strongest time in the 2nd season half.
But after being top2 for most of the season I might lost the top5 in that 2nd half.
So in the end my early high pointers, that weren`t always expected like Geschke`s stage wins or Vantomme`s high scoring in comparison to last years and some unlucky low pointers like here or in especially in the Tour of Britain might finish my team somewhere in the expected area.
So I cannot really be too unhappy and with hopefully 4/5 team goals acchieved and improved talents I hope for an even stronger next season then.
Bellis, Boom, Vantomme, Geschke might stay with some more scoring backups. |

Getting much better at predicting Boeings results, shame that our results are constantly below where they should be... 2014 cannot get here fast enough!

While I didn't get the podium I hoped for 4th and 5th result in more points so I'll take it. Several other scorers as well certainly helps. I wouldn't say it was as decisive as some people are making it out to be, however.
Congrats to AMEX. As said above, make sure you keep those two for next year. Certainly if I promote someone has to fight against HTC.

What a Great day for AMEX. Rookie Robert Bush gets in the breakaway so AMEX does not have to work, leaving legs for the sprint. Eisel and Breschel both look strong and with perfect timing and pull off a ONE-TWO finish.
AMEX also had two other riders finish in the points so this was a HUGE day (Too bad it was not a Goal Race).
Without the cobbles AMEX would be headed back to the CT. We have a great deal of work to do in the offseason. Sprinting was a major failure and the future will have to be seriously calculated. We definitely need more points on the uphill days.
WOW!

A bit mixed feelings. 3rd on its own is pretty decent. But in such a small field we should have had additional pointscorers. And Veelers was getting pretty close to that elusive win. Only at the end will we be able to tell if it is enough.
Congrats to AMEX, big way to score.
