Now and again in a breakaway one of the other riders flicks his arm (as in real life) to get other riders to help work in the break.
My question is can I get one of my own riders to do the same thing, as I'm often in a break where another rider or riders aren't contributing and I don't see an option to do this?

I thought not and it's a bad flaw, breakaways would be more interesting if you could try and convince certain riders to work with you in the break. |

There is nothing wrong with the way the break aways work.
If the AI riders don't want to help your rider, they don't. Computers cannot be convinced.
You can use the effort of your rider to somewhat organise the break away. Lower the % so that the AI riders have to work. Or in the beginning of the break, you can raise the % if the peloton tries to catch the break.
But if your rider is a race or stage favorite, or way stronger than the other riders in the break, they will not help. |

not necessarily true
i had the perfect breakaway stage (a longish hill stage, 2 weeks into the Giro) and put LLS into it (dubbed a 1* favourite) and managed to get the AI to work (even if he sat at the back for the last 5kms of a mountain to win the points)
works if you've got a KOM contender (even though they ALL sprint for it) in the break with you |

Another big problem that I have in a breakaway especially on flat terrain, is winning from a small group of riders (say 4 to 6) even with the best sprinter it's hard work. Usually if I attack the others chase me down and I've used too much energy, if I try to follow who I think is the strongest in the group, each counter-attack tires my rider, especially if I try to respond to the others attacking. Sitting back and doing nothing is useless as well, as I miss all the attacks when the come.
Is there a tactic to increase the chances of winning a sprint in this situation? And what are the best ways to ride in a breakaway on flat terrain?

The best way to do that in my experience is to make the other riders work more at the start, and to then set a high pace (dot 80~85) to prevent attacks, makinng sure you don't lose energy yourself ofc.. Then take the wheel of the best sprinter and it should work.

You should try to conserve as much energy possible, and start the sprint as late as possible.
Following a rider or counter attacking rider uses a lot of energy.
But it really depends on your rider (how good he is) and on how good the rest of the breakaway is.
I usually just try to stay in the group for as long as possible and start the sprint late so I have the most energy left over for the sprint

Strangely enough I've never used the dot of 80-85 in this scenario, but always use it on the final climb on mountain stages, so I'll guess I'll try it here. |

I only use the dot on final climbs as well, in breakaways I just use "hold position" for as long as possible.
You should try different tactics, with dot or just just conserve as much energy as possible by using "hold position" and find out what works best for you.
What difficulty are you playing on?

As I first started playing the game at the beginning of the year I'm still playing on normal, keep thinking that I should go upto the next level, but can't see the point if I can't do some simple stuff like winning in a breakaway on normal level. |

Then you should just try to win with different situations on Normal.
Play out different tactics, and search the forum for tips and make sure to check out the Tips & Tricks section: https://pcmdaily.c...tricks.php
A lot of usefull detailed information you can find there

Have used most of them, but breakaways is probably about the only thing that I haven't really mastered. |

Breakaways (in my opinion) needs a lot of luck, but I find myself in a winning situation most of the time, by combining different tactics mentioned on this forum, experience, and just try things, take risks and see what happens
