42,5km mainly flat time trial. This should mix the GC quite a bit as we have big differences in between the top placed riders.
Kennaugh is the better time trialist as Bennett or Kirsch. So we likely see a GC change today.
Puncheur wise Kelderman should be the best in comparison to Skujins and McCarthy. So also the fight for the top5 is wide open.
Cattaneo should be very frustrated with the race so far. So the big question is if he can come back with a strong time trial and tomorrows mountain top finish. He is definitely the best against the clock of all climbers. So there is a chance.
Also Shikai should be able to improve his GC position a bit as he belongs to the better time trialists.
Stage wise we have several contenders next to those mentioned.
Dumoulin, Durbridge, Viennet, Sütterlin, Yatsevich or Haugard to name just a few.
First a group of 3 very early starters.
Predatsch sets the best time at every point and so takes the first serious time in the finish.
Gonzalez Salas though beats him everywhere and is 9s faster in the finish. So next virtual lead.
Zmorka though does exactly the same and takes the next best time. And this one looks pretty serious and shows his ambitions to win todays time trial as he is 31s faster.
Next some more timetrialists starting a bit later.
Haugard obviously feels the mountains in his legs today as he can`t ride as fast as you would expect. Not taking the podium on the intermediates and also just the 6th in the finish.
Dumoulin makes it a bit better. He improves from section to section to take the first in the finish beating Zmorka`s time by 7s only.
Viennet though starts and beats every single time on the track. And actually quite a lot as he finishes 16s ahead of the Dutch in the finish.
Durbridge is the next and last of the pure time trialists. 7th, 5th, 3rd are his section positions. With pretty consistent 22', 23' and 22' behind. So a good ride and the provisional 3rd for the Aussie.
So let`s come to some GC riders, who couldn`t show their whole potential yet.
Shikai was expected to fight for the GC podium here but as 21st he is far off. Todays time trial should suit him but his times are not that good actually. 12th in the end 55s off. Still comparing him to other times of GC riders starting right ahead of him like Olivier he should improve quite a bit.
Cattaneo comes next. A topfavourite as 17th only? No way. And similar to Shikai he should improve a lot even though he is 1s slower than the previous rider. But gaining 2-3 min on some of the riders ahead is a good start before tomorrows mountain stage.
Let`s come to the fight for the top5.
Kelderman is the first of 3 puncheurs in top5 range. And definitely the best timetrialist of those. So his chances could be worse actually.
53rd provisional in the end being 2min down to Viennet. Could have been worse as he is gaining time on other riders for sure and the riders coming should eventually lose more time.
Skujins as next and one of 3 very strong Vesuvio riders in this race as Koep btw. showed a strong time trial an could even enter the top10 GC to make it 3 Vesuvio riders in there.
Well. Skujins. What to say about this performance? One of the weakest today and so he is almost 4min down, which means, Kelderman gains almost 2min.
Kennaugh was always there when other top favourites did lose time. So it`s not undeserved that he is still fighting for the win. And as best time trialist in the top10 he has good chances to take the lead today.
25th in the end 1'24 down but gaining quite some time on his opponents. But we will have to wait for Bennett first.
Kirsch is next on the clock. Decent time trial. Not more. 2'07 means he will stay ahead of Kelderman but is overtaken by Kennaugh. Still on podium course.
McCarthy as best placed of the puncheurs so far. But just like Skujins he hates time trials. He is even a bit weaker today and is 4'09 down. GC wise this means he will drop out of the top5 being overtakes by Kelderman and Skujins who still are inside the top5.
Bennett as last starter in the leader jersey. He needs a perfect ride to keep Kennaugh behind him.
In the end this wasn`t possible as he finishes 2'50 behind stage winner Viennet and so loses his lead but he will be 2nd after today just 6s ahead of Kirsch and 16s ahead of Kelderman. Close until tomorrow for the podium.
Then the first bigger gap but with Morton in 7th, Cattaneo up to 8th and Shikai in 9th now there are 3 more riders who will try to enter the top5 at least tomorrow when the climbers will get another chance to drop the remaining puncheurs.
Koretzky also stays inside the top10 but is under pressure by Koep who is just 1s down as also Barguil, Grmay and Reis being close behind.
