5th stage in total and the 3rd sprint stage already. The sprinters won`t get a lot of chances in the 2nd half, so today is very important for those before we head towards the real GC battle.
Stallaert and Zabel were the two sprint winners so far. Bennett and Matthews are still waiting for their first Avenir win.
Will someone of those win today or will we have someone completely different?
Only 3 riders in todays breakaway. Obviously the other teams don`t see a chance as they expect the sprinter teams to be too dominant.
Paulus
Manfredi
Craddock.
Last mentioned with +7'55 is by far the best placed of those. So not a real danger. But it`s good to see that Bpost is taking the pressure from Stallaert, who showed a poor sprint on the 3rd stage after winning the first.
First and only KoM. But as it is a Cat.3 the riders look interested.
Manfredi closely takes it ahead of Craddock with Paulus being 3rd. But as none of them has points so far, they are far from the jersey.
Jaguar and Volkswagen take the work from Puma, who actually have pretty easy days to defend the leader jersey.
80km and a 6min gap. Nothing impossible as the pace gets higher now.
No interest in the sprint at all. Manfredi, Paulus, Craddock the order here.
66km and the gap is down to 5min.
Not a surprise realy that the group had no chance. With 8,3km to go they are caught and as the stage wasn`t very hard we have all 200 riders within the peloton.
Let`s hope now that we won`t see any GC rider struggle on the last meters.
Only 2 sprint trains today as Volkswagen either struggled to come to the front or didn`t plan to do one.
Tewelde Weiss Cisse Matthews Bennett Petit Grosu Zabel Krieger Stallaert Aregger Kreder Coquard Demare
2km to go and Weiss is doing a tremendous leadout as he outsprints the Jaguar train.
Out of nowhere though yesterdays stage winner Lutsenko obviously wants to make it another one and goes past the trains.
This mixes up the sprint preparations quite a lot as we see the Oz train being surprised by that a lot.
So we have Petit, Zabel, Holst Enger, Kreder, Stallaert and Demare all going past them, while Bennett also struggles a bit to find a gap.
While Mattews still struggles, Bennett found a gap and comes fast now to challenge Petit, Holst Enger and Kreder in the lead.
Jaguar also played it very smart as Cisse is nicely blocking the riders behind him, in especially Krieger and Van der Sande.
In the end nobody was able to match Bennett`s speed and so he takes also his first win here.
Rick Zabel takes a good 2nd ahead of Demare with his best placement so far.
The French this way wins the battle of the punchuer sprinters as Kreder (4th) and Grosu (5th) were right behind.
Petit, Aregger, Matthews, Stallaert and Van der Sande complete the top10 with Holst Enger losing a lot of ground in the end to come in 11th only. Still a very consistent performance by him here.
So let`s take away the flatter stages and let`s expect a great first mountain stage tomorrow. It`s probably this race`s queen stage with 6 tough climbs starting from the very beginning. All those riders fighting for the win today, will need to fight even harder tomorrow to stay in the race.
