Tour de l'Avenir - Stage 1
roturn
img51.imageshack.us/img51/4052/ptck.jpg

We start with an pretty easy stage. Almost no climbing and a very flat ending. Anything but a sprint finish would be a surprise I guess.
Top favourites are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Bennett, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Matthews (riding for Oz) and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Zabel.

img692.imageshack.us/img692/9259/qchb.jpg

The first sprint is pretty early and despite several riders already tried to attack, the peloton is still together.
Surprisingly i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Amanuel takes it here as he opened a gap for some reason. Behind him a fight of the three top favourites with Matthews winning over Bennett and Zabel.

img14.imageshack.us/img14/4651/hev2.jpg

Right afterwards new attacks and in the end only 3 riders are successfully. Surely many teams don`t want to spend their energy due to the hard stages to come and low chances today.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png McCarthy, actually on of the best puncheurs in the whole peloton and so top favourite for stages 2 and 4 alongside two other decent puncheurs in
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Bazhkou and
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.png Boswell.

img46.imageshack.us/img46/8927/tc7f.jpg

Mainly Jaguar is doing the early pace but more teams like Oz Cycling, Wiggle-Tinkoff in their event-jersey and Volkswagen are doing the pace. So not a big surprise as the three topfavourites send their guys to the front plus Wiggle.Tinkoff with two options. Cattaneo as top favourite in the GC and Moser as decent sprinter. Showing strength early on probably is the main reason.

img820.imageshack.us/img820/4207/prj6.jpg

The KoM decision of the first stage is next on the program and McCarthy shows his advantage and will wear the KoM jersey tomorrow, when he enter his most suited stage including the Mur de Huy.
Behind him Bazhkou outsprints Boswell for 2nd.

img27.imageshack.us/img27/1230/bl4p.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Nielsen is the first rider to crash. He already had this feeling in Hellas recently actually. But there he also won a stage. So eventually a good sign.
But no problem for him to come back soon afterwards.

img703.imageshack.us/img703/5261/xcmt.jpg

Next sprint and the first for the breakaway.
Again McCarthy is the strongest ahead of Bazhkou and Boswell. So same order as on the KoM.

img4.imageshack.us/img4/553/ay6v.jpg

Next unlucky rider. But this time it`s only a puncture for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Shikai.
But all other 7 riders waiting for him immediately shows his position in the team. He is the clear leader and probably hopes to finish within the top5-10.

img513.imageshack.us/img513/8632/9qbn.jpg

86km left and Oz Cycling took over in the peloton as the gap is still at 7min. Time to higher the pace.

img826.imageshack.us/img826/5061/6duw.jpg

Next crash and it`s the Frenchman Le Gac riding for the Portuguese team here. This one really looked nasty but he is at least back on his bike.

Just a bit later we had another crash and it`s Moreno Moser, sprinter of the Wiggle-Tinkoff team. This is actually not ideal for the team, who is still helping doing the pace. So it`s Cattaneo, who has their priority already today.

But both of them come back, even though it took quite a lot of time.

img4.imageshack.us/img4/4862/1d8t.jpg

As said. Wiggle-Tinkoff are doing a high pace with ~35km to go and a gap of just 1'40. Moser though showing some strenght and is back in the first third of the peloton.

img843.imageshack.us/img843/6871/3fjn.jpg

Next sprint and again McCarty in first. But this time Boswell outsprints Bazhkou for 2nd.

img809.imageshack.us/img809/719/fp4i.jpg

But all the effort didn`t help them. With 14km to go they are caught and the sprinters line up.

img842.imageshack.us/img842/9256/pw0i.jpg

Quite a chaotic sprint preparation as no team really sets a train. Oz at least tries it and so Weiss is in the first position with Matthews following.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Weiss
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Matthews
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png Stallaert
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Edmondsoni439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Coquardi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.png Van der Lijke
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Havik
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Vesely
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Zabeli439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Bennett
Also Grosu, Petit, Demare, Van der Sande, Krieger or Kreder are somewhere in the mix. But not placed as good as they probably should.

img844.imageshack.us/img844/8161/07fg.jpg

This leadout did not work as ideal as possible. So Matthews has to start the sprint with 2km to go already as Weiss just couldn`t keep that high pace.

img834.imageshack.us/img834/2340/j9zc.jpg

This is of course good news for Stallaert and Van der Lijke as they got a perfect leadout until the Flamme Rouge, when they try to go around the Aussie.

img854.imageshack.us/img854/2461/r1fc.jpg

Matthews seems to be beaten by Stallaert at least but more riders are coming from behind.
Vesely on the left and Petit, Grosu on the right as closest but also Demare, Aregger and Zabel aren`t too far behind.

img692.imageshack.us/img692/5734/hqfr.jpg

Stallaert still has a small gap but Vesely and Petit are coming fast while Matthews is losing ground with every meter.

img22.imageshack.us/img22/6871/lxsd.jpg

And so the winner of stage 1 is not undeserved Joeri Stallaert for Bpost. This is actually a small surprise even though he belongs to the better outside favourites for a sprint win.
Petit as 2nd ahead of Vesely. No question that both of them will be named often in a few seasons as well as they have a bright future ahead.
Grosu with a surprising 4th ahead of future great Demare and Van der Lijke.
Matthews only finished 7th ahead of Aregger and Zabel.

Biggest disappointings today are probably Van der Sande (12.), Kreder (16.), Coquard (17.), Krieger (39.) or the biggest Bennett (47.).

To mention are Le Gac, who lost contact in the end and definitely looked injured. The young French finished a bit more than 5min behind and just ahead of Senechal, who suffered a puncture in the final.
