After a hard day in the hills yesterday, the race here in Brazil returns to the flat. The terrain isn't completely flat, with a big climb to tackle during the day, but a bunch sprint is still probable. The favourites today are Guillen, Andriato and Santos.
Soon enough the first attacks happen, with Tankink and Van Niekerk both getting away early in a repeat of stage 1.
Those two are pulled back after a while though, with the sprinters' teams making sure their men collect maximum points at the first intermediate sprint.
Chicchi takes it, ahead of Andriato and Guillen.
Hitting the climb though, the attention turns to the King of the Mountains battle, which will conclude today with no further sprints tomorrow. Competition leader Grau is the first to make a move, with Tankink on his wheel.
The first of two sprints is taken by Grau, who tightens his grip on the polka-dots.
The Spaniard also takes the other, confirming his victory in the competition. Tankink can only watch further behind.
After that a truce is reached between the two riders, who on the descent try to hold their advantage over the peloton which has grown to 2'30".
They move through the fourth sprint of the day which Tankink takes uncontested. Soon though they are back in the peloton, with Repsol doing a good job of chasing.
That means the sprinters contest the final sprint of the day. Guillen takes it this time, ahead of Andriato and Chicchi.
Then the sprinters teams take to the front once more to marshal the peloton ahead of the sprint, making sure no attacks are let go.
Soon enough the first trains are formed, by Boeing and Repsol for Andriato and Chicchi respectively.
BNCR also join in before the sprint opens up, for Guillen. The sprinters are laid out as follows:
Bucciero Morales Milayhov Cano Rodriguez Galindo Chicchi Guillen Machado Crespo Santos Andriato Damrow Lequatre Anton Martin
The Boeing effort is the first to fall apart, with Chicchi deciding to plump for the Repsol train instead. The two others remain locked in a battle to set up their leader the best.
Nearing the final kilometre, it is the BNCR train which has taken pole position, with Andriato forced to go early. Guillen and Santos look perfectly positioned to pounce.
With 800 metres to go, Lequatre has moved forward into the lead. Santos and Anton Martin are coming through either side of him, while Andriato is already fading. Guillen is just starting his sprint now.
Soon enough, Santos has moved into the lead! Can anyone stop him?
It doesn't look like it!
Santos takes his hattrick of stage wins here in Brazil, extending his overall lead. The man from Portugal seems invincible here at the moment.
Anton Martin secures second which moves him into the U25 competition lead and second overall, while Lequatre clings on to a good podium in third after making his move early. Crespo and Day round off the top five with late kicks.
With that victory Santos' lead has grown to 44", which means the GC is virtually his. People will have to gap him tomorrow on tomorrow's flat to overtake him.
