Tour do Rio - Stage 4
FroomeDog99
i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Rio4_zps2e753520.png

After a hard day in the hills yesterday, the race here in Brazil returns to the flat. The terrain isn't completely flat, with a big climb to tackle during the day, but a bunch sprint is still probable. The favourites today are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Guillen, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos.

Soon enough the first attacks happen, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Tankink and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Van Niekerk both getting away early in a repeat of stage 1.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0007_zpsfeac5aaa.jpg

Those two are pulled back after a while though, with the sprinters' teams making sure their men collect maximum points at the first intermediate sprint.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0011_zpse63a67ae.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi takes it, ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Guillen.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0014_zpsf6640fd5.jpg

Hitting the climb though, the attention turns to the King of the Mountains battle, which will conclude today with no further sprints tomorrow. Competition leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Grau is the first to make a move, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Tankink on his wheel.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0020_zps073968ae.jpg

The first of two sprints is taken by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Grau, who tightens his grip on the polka-dots.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0024_zps542790ea.jpg

The Spaniard also takes the other, confirming his victory in the competition. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Tankink can only watch further behind.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0029_zps96fb5631.jpg

After that a truce is reached between the two riders, who on the descent try to hold their advantage over the peloton which has grown to 2'30".

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0036_zps6958d392.jpg

They move through the fourth sprint of the day which i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Tankink takes uncontested. Soon though they are back in the peloton, with Repsol doing a good job of chasing.

That means the sprinters contest the final sprint of the day. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Guillen takes it this time, ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0041_zps929cae84.jpg

Then the sprinters teams take to the front once more to marshal the peloton ahead of the sprint, making sure no attacks are let go.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0043_zps0b79b965.jpg

Soon enough the first trains are formed, by Boeing and Repsol for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi respectively.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0048_zpsea320ad6.jpg

BNCR also join in before the sprint opens up, for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Guillen. The sprinters are laid out as follows:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Bucciero
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Moralesi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Milayhov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Canoi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Rodriguez Galindoi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Guilleni439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Machadoi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/vtf_zps1d97281a.png Crespo

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0052_zps49674fc4.jpg

The Boeing effort is the first to fall apart, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi deciding to plump for the Repsol train instead. The two others remain locked in a battle to set up their leader the best.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0054_zps25d8f8fe.jpg

Nearing the final kilometre, it is the BNCR train which has taken pole position, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato forced to go early. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Guillen and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos look perfectly positioned to pounce.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0057_zps64d75a76.jpg

With 800 metres to go, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Lequatre has moved forward into the lead. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Anton Martin are coming through either side of him, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato is already fading. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Guillen is just starting his sprint now.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0060_zpsbbb43a46.jpg

Soon enough, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos has moved into the lead! Can anyone stop him?

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0063_zpsf38a647e.jpg

It doesn't look like it!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0066_zpsf2f6f7c0.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos takes his hattrick of stage wins here in Brazil, extending his overall lead. The man from Portugal seems invincible here at the moment.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0073_zpsacfdff75.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Anton Martin secures second which moves him into the U25 competition lead and second overall, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Lequatre clings on to a good podium in third after making his move early. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/vtf_zps1d97281a.png Crespo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Day round off the top five with late kicks.

With that victory i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos' lead has grown to 44", which means the GC is virtually his. People will have to gap him tomorrow on tomorrow's flat to overtake him.
