The race here in Brazil hits stage 2, with the Continental peloton facing another flat day which will most likely conclude in a bunch sprint. Your favourites are Guillen, Santos and Chicchi.
The first attack of the day comes after 5 kilometres, with Grau being the first to go on the offensive today. He lost some time yesterday so he will be hoping that the peloton gives him some leniency today.
That happens, and with no-one else interested in a breakaway, the Spanish rider forms a solo breakaway. He sweeps all the sprints over the day.
Sprint 1 2 3 Intermediate 1 Grau Andriato SantosMountain 1 Grau Gottfried NascimentoIntermediate 2 Grau Chicchi SantosMountain 2 Grau Gottfried Silva
Over the top of the last King of the Mountains climb, Grau has just under 2 minutes advantage over the peloton, with 25 kilometres remaining. He will have to do something special to stay away now.
Behind, the main sprinters' teams set a high tempo and are in control of the gap, slowly bringing it down.
Under the 10 kilometres to go banner, Grau is finally caught after his long solo venture off the front. BNCR move onto the front, determined to get an advantage ahead of the forthcoming bunch sprint.
Five kilometres later though, it is Repsol who are the first to get a train sorted. They look to be giving Andriato the perfect leadout on home turf.
Prio also manage to scramble together a train before the sprint starts. On the road the situation is like this:
Rodriguez Galindo Machado Pires Andriato Carvalho Lequatre Crespo Santos Tianen Haddi Anton Martin Milayhov Chicchi
As the sprint begins, it remains very tight at the front between the Repsol and Prio trains. Around the final corner with just 2000 metres to go, the South American squad have a slight advantage.
Onto the finishing straight though, a big push from Machado like yesterday puts the Prio train in difficulty. Santos is forced to hop onto Crespo's wheel, who has been lucky in finding Andriato's slipstream.
Under the flammage rouge, Andriato has stared his sprint. Crespo has moved into the lead, while Santos is coming with great speed from behind!
With 800 metres left, the three riders are three abreast! Santos has edged into the lead, but Andriato is matching him for speed.
There is nothing to separate them moving into the final few metres! Behind them Lequatre moves into the top three.
Further back Day, Milayhov and Tianen are all moving in the closing stages. All eyes remain on the front two though!
Santos finds a couple of metres out of nowhere to take the stage, over the very last part of the sprint! It's the second stage for the Prio rider, who extends his overall lead courtisey of bonus seconds.
Andriato once again can't capitalize on a perfect leadout, finishing a close second today after yesterday's third. Lequatre is third, with Anton Martin and Day edging into the top five.
That leaves Santos with a 46" advantage over the over all contenders going into the hilly stage. It'll be interesting to see whether he can keep the race lead tomorrow.
