Tour do Rio - Stage 1

Welcome to Brazil for the start of the 2013 Tour do Rio. The race begins with a flat stage, meaning the sprinters will most likely contest the stage. The favourites are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Guillen, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato who will want to get their race off to a good start.

Soon enough, a breakaway is established. It consists of two men; i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Van Niekerk and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Tankink both want to get their teams some camera time.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0006_zps2d1ed39a.jpg

The first mountain sprint is won by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Tankink ahead of the South African, a pattern which is seen throughout the day. All four sprints were taken by the Dutchman.

Approaching the final few kilometres the break is slowly reeled in by the sprinters' teams. With 14 kilometres left i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Tankink is caught, but the same can't be said for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Van Niekerk yet. His energy conserved from the sprints looks to be paying off as he attacks away from the peloton once more.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0014_zps8cd84065.jpg

He doesn't get far though, and is brought back by the time the bunch reaches the final 10 kilometres, controlled by Prio, BNCR and Repsol. The sprinters will battle out the stage.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0022_zps4e8d9edf.jpg

Prio are the first team to set up a train which is for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos, and at the 5 kilometres to go mark he is in pole position out o the sprinters.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0025_zpsc47e4fbf.jpg

The Portuguese team storms into the lead soon after, leaving the rest of the peloton behind. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi is the only rider to have found the right wheel, with the rest lagging further behind.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0027_zpsee96cc0f.jpg

BNCR and Repsol trains both manage to make their way back to the front however, for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Guillen and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato respectively. As the sprint begins on the left of the road, the trains look like this:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Pires

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Machado puts Repsol on the front foot in the early stages, with a great kick moving him ahead of the other trains.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0036_zpsba1fbf30.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato is forced to go early from 1500 metres out though, after i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Machado starts to fade. Surely he can't last that long on the front?

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0039_zpsdc90bee4.jpg

Under the kite, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/vtf_zps1d97281a.png Tianen has moved out of the Brazilian's slipstream and is trying to move past him. Behind them, everyone seems to have started their sprint with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Guillen leading the chase.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0042_zpsd82c08ad.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato is still in the lead with 700 metres to go, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/vtf_zps1d97281a.png Tianen unable to pass him! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos is coming fast from behind, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi on his wheel.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0048_zps420994bc.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos moves into the lead with just a couple hundred metres left and must be the favourite from here, past a fading i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi is just coming out of his wheel, and could also have a chance.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0052_zpsd1ccacf4.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos doesn't look like he is fading though...

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0056_zps1c75ba49.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos takes the stage here in Portugal! The Prio rider takes a deserved win, after a great sprint. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi was the only rider to get close to him, but even he had to use Santos' slipstream for most of the final kilometre.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0063_zps07fb611a.jpg

The podium is completed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato, who held off the field well after a long sprint. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/vtf_zps1d97281a.png Tianen and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Guillen round off the top five, after a good day here in Rio.
