Welcome to Brazil for the start of the 2013 Tour do Rio. The race begins with a flat stage, meaning the sprinters will most likely contest the stage. The favourites are Guillen, Santos and Andriato who will want to get their race off to a good start.
Soon enough, a breakaway is established. It consists of two men; Van Niekerk and Tankink both want to get their teams some camera time.
The first mountain sprint is won by Tankink ahead of the South African, a pattern which is seen throughout the day. All four sprints were taken by the Dutchman.
Sprint 1 2 3 Mountain 1 Tankink Van Niekerk GottfriedIntermediate 1 Tankink Van Niekerk SantosIntermediate 2 Tankink Van Niekerk GuillenMountain 2 Tankink Van Niekerk Chaves
Approaching the final few kilometres the break is slowly reeled in by the sprinters' teams. With 14 kilometres left Tankink is caught, but the same can't be said for Van Niekerk yet. His energy conserved from the sprints looks to be paying off as he attacks away from the peloton once more.
He doesn't get far though, and is brought back by the time the bunch reaches the final 10 kilometres, controlled by Prio, BNCR and Repsol. The sprinters will battle out the stage.
Prio are the first team to set up a train which is for Santos, and at the 5 kilometres to go mark he is in pole position out o the sprinters.
The Portuguese team storms into the lead soon after, leaving the rest of the peloton behind. Chicchi is the only rider to have found the right wheel, with the rest lagging further behind.
BNCR and Repsol trains both manage to make their way back to the front however, for Guillen and Andriato respectively. As the sprint begins on the left of the road, the trains look like this:
Pires Carvalho Santos Morales Machado Chicchi Cano Andriato Veilleux Guillen Tianen Day Mihaylov
Machado puts Repsol on the front foot in the early stages, with a great kick moving him ahead of the other trains.
Andriato is forced to go early from 1500 metres out though, after Machado starts to fade. Surely he can't last that long on the front?
Under the kite, Tianen has moved out of the Brazilian's slipstream and is trying to move past him. Behind them, everyone seems to have started their sprint with Guillen leading the chase.
Andriato is still in the lead with 700 metres to go, with Tianen unable to pass him! Santos is coming fast from behind, with Chicchi on his wheel.
Santos moves into the lead with just a couple hundred metres left and must be the favourite from here, past a fading Andriato. Chicchi is just coming out of his wheel, and could also have a chance.
Santos doesn't look like he is fading though...
Santos takes the stage here in Portugal! The Prio rider takes a deserved win, after a great sprint. Chicchi was the only rider to get close to him, but even he had to use Santos' slipstream for most of the final kilometre.
The podium is completed by Andriato, who held off the field well after a long sprint. Tianen and Guillen round off the top five, after a good day here in Rio.
