Geelong Tour - Stage 6
FroomeDog99
i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Geelogn6_zpse97a3972.png

The final stage of the race is a short 60km criterium around Geelong. The sprinters will all want a bunch sprint to decide the victory, so their teams should ensure any attacks do not stay away. The pre-stage favourites are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Guillen, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Peeters and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/abc_zps288913e0.png Thorsen. Surprisingly there is no mention of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Renshaw, who has won both flat stages so far.

The race starts off at a fast pace, with no attacks being let go. The sprinters' teams even go as far as to set up leadouts for their fast men ahead of the first couple of intermediate sprints.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Guillen takes the first comfortably, before i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Peeters wins the second.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1056_zps9e91f67a.jpg

After those though, a purposeful attack is finally made, by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Mundle. He isn't a threat at all in the overall, but has been in a break before during stage 2.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1068_zps74dedaf6.jpg

By the time he reaches the third sprint of the day, 25km from the finish, he has an advantage of 1'30". He collects full point, as the minor placings are swept up by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Peeters and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Guillen.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1075_zpsa883011a.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Mundle holds that gap into the final 20km, where the chase should really accelerate.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1072_zps9cebdd9b.jpg

It does, as JKCP set a high tempo on the front of the peloton which brings the gap down closer to a minute. There is still the complication of a final intermediate sprint, which could disrupt the chase.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1077_zpsf573b563.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Mundle wins the final sprint 15km from the finish, where his gap passes under a minute for the first time. This is partly due to the fast sprinters though, who through i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Peeters and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cre_zps8fb855ae.png Papok take the minor placings.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1069_zps45e95949.jpg

The sprint doesn't disrupt the chase much, with JKCP still dominating the chase moving towards the final few kilometres.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1078_zps74a4ebd9.jpg

Into the last 10km, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Mundle only holds a gap of 35". He could stay away, but that looks unlikely.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1081_zps69e62f98.jpg

Meanwhile, Allianz have moved to the front of the peloton in order to set up a sprint train for their fastman i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/abc_zps288913e0.png Thorsen. They further close the gap to below 30".

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1084_zpsc45ed3a1.jpg

Nearing the 5km to go mark, the Liechtenstinian has nearly been caught. Allianz look in pole position for the sprint, with JKCP trying to set up a train among others.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1086_zpsff7854d9.jpg

The catch is finally made, with the JKCP train pulling into the lead with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Peeters on the back. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Lequatre and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Giacoppo are also well placed..

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1090_zps6ec866db.jpg

The Allianz train powers into the lead as the sprint starts, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/abc_zps288913e0.png Havik doing a great job for his team.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1091_zpsb8a76af2.jpg

Under the kite i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/abc_zps288913e0.png Havik still holds the lead, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/abc_zps288913e0.png Thorsen starting his sprint in his wheel. The rest of the sprinters have all kicked for home, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Uugunbayar, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Lequatre and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Giacoppo all well positioned..

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1095_zpsd618ef62.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Giacoppo holds a slim lead with 800m to go, as the sprinters fan out across the road.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1099_zpsb4ef8c0a.jpg

As a small rise in the road starts, the Risa rider kicks again! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Lequatre and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Hochmann move into second and third, with some weaker riders starting to fade.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1103_zps9cfc5eb5.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Giacoppo takes the stage, after he lead for the most of the last kilometre. He was certainly the strongest of the sprinters today.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM1106_zps4e1919d7.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Lequatre finishes in a solid second, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Hochmann rounding off the podium. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Scully and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Shaekhov both get top five's, with the latter pulling off another surprise.

That finishes the race, which confirms winners in all the competitions. After a quiet day in the peloton, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Westra clinches the overall here in Australia. Cadbury duo i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Renshaw and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Vink take the points and mountain classifications while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Howson wins the white jersey. Gazelle win the teams competition in what was another successful race for them.
