We are ready here in Australia for another stage of the Geelong Tour, which moves onto it's fifth stage. The weather is great as always as the race starts on a day which the sprinters should claim victory, such is the profile. Peeters, Guillen and Abdallah are the men being tipped for victory today.
As always the attacks soon start. Today they are led by Delgerbayar, who is intent to get in the breakaway as well as grabbing the King of the Mountains points on offer near the startline.
He takes the King of the Mountain points, and over the top he is joined by three others; Oz teammate Olman, Vink and Lindau, who made the break during stage 1. Those four are then let go, with Vink being the closest overall (20th @ 1'18").
The first intermediate sprint is won by Vink, ahead of Olman. Those two are the only ones interested in points it seems.
Their gap continues to grow as Allianz set a relaxed pace at the front of the bunch. With over half the race to go it stands at 6'20".
By the time we reach the second King of the Mountains sprint though, it has started to come down. Vink and Lindau prove to be the strongest, distancing the Oz duo at the top. Vink takes it, leaving the provisional standings as follows:
1 VinkTeam Cadbury - Schweppes 11 2 OlmanOz Cycling Project 9 3 DelgerbayarOz Cycling Project 6
Then Lindau and Vink keep on going, opening a large gap back to Olman and Delgerbayar, who look to be in trouble.
A few kilometres later, the peloton has nearly swept them up with Die Berg moving forward to assist with the pacemaking. The gap to the front duo stands at 3'40" with 80 kilometres left.
The two Oz riders are then caught, leaving two men off the front. Lindau and Vink are both working well together, although it seems unlikely at this point that they will stay away.
JKCP are the next team to decide to raise the pace at the front of the bunch, as the race moves into the last 60 kilometres. At the front another sprint has passed, taken by Vink.
With roundabout 50 kilometres left, another King of the Mountain sprint is reached. Vink takes it, further extending his lead. However, when the pace slows at they crest the climb, Lindau sees an opportunity and attacks!
Unsurprisingly though, they are brought back together as the Swede fails to shake the Aussie. They start to work together again after the catch, keeping the gap at around 2'30". Into the last 30 kilometres Gazelle decide to start to bring it down further.
A sprint passes at the front, once more taken out by Vink, but something else has caught the cameras. The peloton has decided to sit up, and nobody knows why!
The break must think it is Christmas as their gap balloons back towards two minutes.
Soon enough, a chase is re-organised by Allianz and JKCP but it could prove to be too late, with the gap standing at 1'40" with 15 kilometres left.
Thanks to some good work though, it is brought back to just under a minute as we enter the final 10 kilometres of the stage. A short, steep hill is reached, which should test both the sprinters and breakaway.
A good tempo is set by Allianz up the hill, bringing back the break to within touching distance. Vink and Lindau's adventure seems to be finally finishing.
Unbelievably though, the peloton sits up once again under the five-kilometers-to-go banner! Race leader Westra is forced to move onto the front to set the pace, as no-one else will.
The reason this time seems to be that Allianz, who were setting the pace, have left the front to help their dropped sprinter Thorsen, who couldn't handle the hill. His chances of victory have gone.
Back with the break, Lindau and Vink have reached the final descent into the finish. The gap stands at 40" as BNCR desperately try to put together a sprint train behind.
They eventually manage to, with Firsanov starting the sprint with leader Guillen on his wheel. Abdallah, Giacoppo and Renshaw are also well placed.
The Russian is doing a sterling job moving into the final couple of kilometers, reducing the gap to 20". Vink and Lindau better start sprinting now, or it will be too late.
They wait too long, and still won't sprint as they are caught by Firsanov. After all that, the sprinters will fight out the win.
Under the flammage rouge Firsanov has pulled out a gap, after a brilliant leadout that even leaves team leader Guillen behind and struggling. Abdallah leads the chase behind.
He still holds the lead coming around the final corner, but is fading. Renshaw is coming through fast from behind!
Giacoppo then kicks! Can Renshaw hold onto his slim lead?
He can! Renshaw claims his second victory of the race, clearly he is the strongest sprinter here in Australia. Timing his sprint to perfection, he just held off Giacoppo, who finishes second.
Uwimana takes a great podium, after his team leader faded. Scully and Lequatre round off the top five.
Westra retains his yellow jersey and the overall lead, while Renshaw moves up to seventh on a great day for Cadburys. Vink also moves into polka-dots.
