The third stage of the Geelong Tour is flat, like the first. The GC contenders that battled yesterday should get a rest after yesterday's hilly stage, as the sprinters look for a win. The main favourites are all big sprinters: Guillen, Peeters and Thorsen.
The attacks begin quickly as usual, lead by Huntegobler who also got into the break during stage 1. More surprising though is his fellow attacker, Cioban, who sits in eighth overall pre-stage.
As they try to establish a gap, Eskpla's main sprinter Meenhorst takes a tumble. He looks Ok though and can continue, as he moves back into the pack.
Back at the front, the leading duo has been joined by Koretzky. Strangely, he is another rider in the top ten overall, 33" back on on the race lead like Cioban. They are allowed to build a gap regardless, as Allianz set a relaxed pace on the front of the bunch.
As the gap reaches 3'30" though the pace is raised by the German Squad, aided by a few other sprinter's teams. with 40 kilometers left to race, it is brought down to below three minutes.
The breakaway's advantage is slowly shortened, thanks to some good work from the peloton. With two more laps to go of the 11 kilometer circuit around Portarlington, it is 1'25".
It comes down further to below a minute a few kilometers later, with Allianz remaining the main driving force on the front of the bunch.
Onto the final lap, the trio has nearly been caught. Just 30" separates them from the bunch, and a sprinter taking victory looks assured.
On the last climb though, the pace slows on the front of the bunch with the teams not wanting to hurt their sprinters' chances. This gives an opportunity to the attackers, who attack away as the gradient goes over 3%.
Cioban proves to be the strongest, and is alone with a 40" advantage as he crests the top of the climb. With just 6 kilometers remaining, he could take this!
Behind, the peloton is in disarray, after seeing the break disappear out of their clutches. Kriek has to move onto the front to raise the pace, to try to protect Shaekhov's GC lead.
Koretzky and Huntegobler remain in the gap, trying to rejoin the Romanian. They remain 20" behind him though, as the race enters the last 3000 metres.
JKCP move onto the front of the peloton to set up a leadout for Peeters, who came 2nd on stage 1. Scully sits on his wheel, with Abakoumov, Points leader Renshaw and Giacoppo all also well positioned.
There efforts could all be in vain though, as Cioban can see the flammage rouge!
As the sprint begins behind, Papok takes an early lead after passing Koretzky and Huntegobler, leaving Cioban alone off the front.
The Romanian rider is just metres away from taking a great solo win for Eskpla. The bunch is coming fast though, and he can't celebrate yet.
Into the final kilometer, Papok is already fading after he went very early. Giacoppo is coming through fast, and sets off in pursuit of victory.
The Australian is flying as he moves into the last 500 metres, taking bike lengths on his sprinting rivals. Is he too late though to take victory?
He is, just. Cioban takes a brilliant solo victory, holding off the peloton by only a few metres! Giacoppo takes a deserved 2nd, after clearly being the strongest sprinter today.
Renshaw rounds off the podium, taking 8 bonus seconds which move him to within 1" of Shaekhov in the GC. Uwimana and Scully both complete a very odd top five.
With that victory Cioban moves from 8th to 5th in the overall. He shouldn't stay there after tomorrow though, with an ITT on stage 4 likely to shake up the race overall. Shaekhov still holds the lead, and it will be interesting if he can hold it.
One rider failed to finish today: Othman, who finished outside the time limit.
