Geelong Tour - Stage 2
FroomeDog99
i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Geelogn2_zps4ceb74f0.png

After yesterday's flat stage, the Geelong Tour reaches a stage which could prove decisive in the final GC. The hilly nature of the stage, along with a 3.5km ramp up to the finish line could and should form gaps among the GC contenders. There aren't any main favourites but the bookies have i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Cioban, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Westra and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Puusepp down as the main contenders.

Quickly the attacks start, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Mundle being the first today.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0657_zps3359a501.jpg

He remains alone, 35” in front of the peloton as he reaches the first sprint point of the day.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0666_zps8ca27f47.jpg

The sprinters contest the second place, which is claimed by race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Renshaw ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cre_zps8fb855ae.png Papok. That strengthens his grip on the GC and Points classifications.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0671_zps42cb1280.jpg

As the race calms back down, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Olman decides to cross the gap. The two riders are finally let go and form the day’s breakaway.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0679_zps06b5a287.jpg

Gazelle control the peloton behind, intent on controlling the gap. As the race moves out of the opening stages, it stands at a regulated 2’45”.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0685_zpsab3df7d6.jpg

By the time the duo reaches the lone mountain sprint, it has already started to go down and stands at 2’05”. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Olman proves the stronger of the two, beating i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Mundle to the top.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0689_zps5ef0ff60.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Mundle takes revenge though at the second sprint point, which he edges. Their advantage has now dropped below two minutes.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0696_zpsc35c64be.jpg

It comes down even further as an attack is launched by three riders, hoping to spring a surprise on the GC contenders. The riders are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/abc_zps288913e0.png Coyot, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Siskevicus and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Lequatre, who force through a 45” gap.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0698_zps3218fa7e.jpg

Norwegian squad Risa – Ergon take up the chase behind, seeing the trio as a threat.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0702_zps88c7f891.jpg

Back at the front, the two leaders go under the 20 kilometers to go banner. They still hold a lead of 30” back to the three attackers, and 1’15” over the peloton.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0705_zpsf7d16568.jpg

Briefly the two groups off the front join, before they refuse to co-operate and drift back into the peloton’s clutches. Desperate not to get caught just yet, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Mundle puts in an attack, followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Olman.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0710_zps206495bb.jpg

Into the final 10 kilometers, they look certain to be reeled in though by MTN and Risa. That would leave the race open for attacks though, so the catch must be timed well.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0713_zps0cafbb96.jpg

That doesn’t happen though, and as the junction is made i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Siskevicus jumps away, just like he did earlier!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0716_zpsc3f8ac37.jpg

Cadbury sense danger in his attack and close the gap, but the Lithuanian goes again with 5 kilometers left!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0718_zpsa7b841c3.jpg

He is caught once more, but that doesn’t stop him from attacking again as the race moves onto the finishing climb. Can he make it stick this time?

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0722_zpse4106695.jpg

Obviously not. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Siskevicus is pulled back by Cadbury, who are proving defiant in their defense of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Renshaw’s yellow jersey. They are pacing the race as the sprint begins, and occupy the top six places!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0733_zps92c237e0.jpg

The same is true going under the flammage rouge, although many Gazelle riders are coming through from behind. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Harrison is in the lead.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0737_zps9d546756.jpg

With 700m to go i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Shaekhov moves into the lead, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Daspuntsag on his wheel with some speed on a gradient of 10%!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0739_zps62b90ae1.jpg

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Jumabekov is coming, moving into the final 400…

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0743_zpsf11ccf7c.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Shaekhov holds on to take a surprise victory for Gazelle! Many expected his leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Westra to lead Gazelle, but the Uzbekistani rider was the strongest in the end.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0747_zps916c96ff.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Jumabekov will settle for second, after a fast finish. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Daspuntsag rounds off the podium. It there a gap behind them though?

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Westra, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Kriek and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Lalouette, all Gazelle riders finish at the front of the peloton, making it a 1-3-4-5-6 on the day for them! Even better for Gazelle, there is a gap of 13” given which means i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Shaekhov moves into the leader’s jersey!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0758_zps5d210e2d.jpg

Cruclially though, there is a 54-man peloton which survives the hills, including great time triallers like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Flens and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Goddaert, who should challenge for the GC when the TT arrives.
