After yesterday's flat stage, the Geelong Tour reaches a stage which could prove decisive in the final GC. The hilly nature of the stage, along with a 3.5km ramp up to the finish line could and should form gaps among the GC contenders. There aren't any main favourites but the bookies have Cioban, Westra and Puusepp down as the main contenders.
Quickly the attacks start, with Mundle being the first today.
He remains alone, 35” in front of the peloton as he reaches the first sprint point of the day.
The sprinters contest the second place, which is claimed by race leader Renshaw ahead of Papok. That strengthens his grip on the GC and Points classifications.
As the race calms back down, Olman decides to cross the gap. The two riders are finally let go and form the day’s breakaway.
Gazelle control the peloton behind, intent on controlling the gap. As the race moves out of the opening stages, it stands at a regulated 2’45”.
By the time the duo reaches the lone mountain sprint, it has already started to go down and stands at 2’05”. Olman proves the stronger of the two, beating Mundle to the top.
Mundle takes revenge though at the second sprint point, which he edges. Their advantage has now dropped below two minutes.
It comes down even further as an attack is launched by three riders, hoping to spring a surprise on the GC contenders. The riders are Coyot, Siskevicus and Lequatre, who force through a 45” gap.
Norwegian squad Risa – Ergon take up the chase behind, seeing the trio as a threat.
Back at the front, the two leaders go under the 20 kilometers to go banner. They still hold a lead of 30” back to the three attackers, and 1’15” over the peloton.
Briefly the two groups off the front join, before they refuse to co-operate and drift back into the peloton’s clutches. Desperate not to get caught just yet, Mundle puts in an attack, followed by Olman.
Into the final 10 kilometers, they look certain to be reeled in though by MTN and Risa. That would leave the race open for attacks though, so the catch must be timed well.
That doesn’t happen though, and as the junction is made Siskevicus jumps away, just like he did earlier!
Cadbury sense danger in his attack and close the gap, but the Lithuanian goes again with 5 kilometers left!
He is caught once more, but that doesn’t stop him from attacking again as the race moves onto the finishing climb. Can he make it stick this time?
Obviously not. Siskevicus is pulled back by Cadbury, who are proving defiant in their defense of Renshaw’s yellow jersey. They are pacing the race as the sprint begins, and occupy the top six places!
The same is true going under the flammage rouge, although many Gazelle riders are coming through from behind. Harrison is in the lead.
With 700m to go Shaekhov moves into the lead, with Daspuntsag on his wheel with some speed on a gradient of 10%!
But Jumabekov is coming, moving into the final 400…
Shaekhov holds on to take a surprise victory for Gazelle! Many expected his leader Westra to lead Gazelle, but the Uzbekistani rider was the strongest in the end.
Jumabekov will settle for second, after a fast finish. Daspuntsag rounds off the podium. It there a gap behind them though?
Westra, Kriek and Lalouette, all Gazelle riders finish at the front of the peloton, making it a 1-3-4-5-6 on the day for them! Even better for Gazelle, there is a gap of 13” given which means Shaekhov moves into the leader’s jersey!
Cruclially though, there is a 54-man peloton which survives the hills, including great time triallers like Flens and Goddaert, who should challenge for the GC when the TT arrives.
