Welcome to Stage 1 of the 2013 Geelong Tour, which gives the sprinters an early opportunity to grab the leaders jersey due to the flat profile. Expect the best sprinters to contest the victory, names like Guillen, Thorsen and Hochmann.
The first attack of the day is made by Lindau, who looks intent on getting some camera time today.
He is quickly joined by Delgerbayar, Petrovski and recent Tour de Korea victor Huntegobler. They are not faced by any problems and are left to build a gap.
As they reach the first of three sprint points, the gap is held at 3'20" by the peloton, not wanting it to get any bigger due to the short length of the stage. It is won by Delgerbayar ahead of Lindau and Huntegobler.
Gazelle start to up the pace behind as the race moves into the last 40 kilometers, in order to keep the race together ahead of the big GC battle tomorrow.
Their good work has brought the gap down to 1'50" as the second sprint point is reached. Once again Delgerbayar takes maximum points, with Lindau second and Huntegobler taking another third.
The race quickly moves towards its climax as Gazelle remaining the driving force in the bunch, bringing the attackers' advantage down to under a minute as the last 20 kilometers are entered.
The quartet still has enough of a gap to reach the last sprint of the day. Delgerbayar completes his hattrick, with Petrovski second this time ahead of Lindau.
They are soon swept up though as the sprinters' teams finally move to the front. Into the final 10 kilometers a massed sprint looks ensured.
That remains the most likely outcome moving into the final 5000m. Sprint trains are starting to be formed, with Allianz on the left and JKCP on the right.
Thorsten and Peeters are in pole position ahead of the final dash, with Renshaw, Abakoumov, Abdallah and Awang also up in the first few positions.
As the sprint begins, a big push by Uugunbayar puts the Allianz train into difficulty.
Thorsen is forced to fend for himself as his leadout gives up, and tries to follow Cano who has distanced his leader Guillen. Peeters remains the best positioned as his leadout continues.
Into the final kilometer the Dutchman still doesn't start his sprint as others do around him, with Renshaw, Abakoumov and Abdallah coming through.
Around the final bend, the main sprinters are four abreast! Peeters still hasn't gone which could cost him as others fly past him.
With 300m to go Renshaw has moved into a slim lead, and is so close to taking a surprise home victory. Peeters is coming though!
Renshaw holds on! The Australian takes a great home victory, after beating all of the top sprinters by timing his sprint perfectly.
Peeters deserves his 2nd after such a great leadout, with Guillen finishing third after also finishing strongly. Abakoumov and Thorsen round out the top five.
So after that great sprint Renshaw takes the race lead going into tomorrow's hilly stage. He is unlikely to be able to hold on but can celebrate his yellow jersey for now.
