Totally depends on person.
I prefer Continental Tour, then Pro Continental.
I like to build up smaller teams and make it a strong WT team after a few seasons

Personally I hate. Pro conti.
I plan my season in January and it completely throws your season off track if you don't get a wildcard, as you then have to build up fitness. Some people like this uncertainty though, it certainly spices things up.

Well, you always have to have a ''backup'' season-goal around your wildcard. If you are aiming for a WT wildcard, have a race on the same time they can peak for as well.
F.e. If you don't get the Giro, you can always shine in California.
I'd rather peak for 2.HC races anyway, they will give you more points(assuming you won't dominate WT races, you can dominate 2.HC races).
Also, if you aren't one of the 5 strongest PCT teams, you should only plan WT races of your own nationality, you'll be pretty certain to get them, but it'll be hard to get others.

I was playing pcm12 with Spidertech and couldn't even get Canadian Classics, in fact I got 0 wildcards so it would literally be better to just be conti. Dunno if this has changed.

There used to be some races where you could never get a wildcard, like Tirreno Adratico, where they only gave one out and it always went to Farnese Vini, but especially in the classics, its quite easy to get wildcards, as they allow like 6 or 7 pro conti teams to enter
