Post Race thoughts - Final Sprint was a mess, put too much pressure on the attack on the climb.

Edited by rorzcp on 20-09-2013 09:01

My internet is eternally slow lately, so next stage will be a written stage.

rorzcp
Stage 1 of the Santos Tour Down Under is 113km venturing from Mt. Barker to Rostrevor. The stage profile sees a few hills with the last ~20km being downhill. The team today will have a hard task ahead of them.Sorensen will try his luck toward the last hill and if that fails, once again Cantwelll will be out leader for the sprints if he makes it through the hills okay. Cantwell isn't looking to be in the best form and is not the best sprinter in the peloton so if we want him to get the win today the leadout for him will have to be perfect.

i.imgur.com/5iMYAw8.jpg

There we have it, the race is under way with the Saxo boys keeping themselves to the front as you can see. (Kump, Sorensen and McCarthy all pictured)

i.imgur.com/Y4bAPpm.jpg

Not even 5km into the stage and some riders feel it's time to attack. Jay McCarthy feels he should attack too and sit on the back of the breakaway. (Minard [AG2R] starting the attack)
I did want to attack with Lund but he was too far back, so I attack with him once he makes it to the front.

i.imgur.com/3Qf0u6v.jpg

Lund tries to make a move off the front but the peloton doesn't like that thought, they pull in him fast aswell as the group he was trying to catch

i.imgur.com/bKhSGYQ.jpg

There he goes again, the man from Denmark will not lay down, he wants to be in the break today. Nobody wants to join him.

i.imgur.com/yG5z7sX.jpg

Finally some riders come to join him. Lund will not be the lone breakaway any longer

i.imgur.com/tAAQlFM.jpg

The breakaway is caught by the peloton and almost immediately another attack is launched by Ian Stannard(Sky), Anders Lund and others try to join the British Champion

i.imgur.com/Lf6P7Hf.jpg

The man from Denmark never gives up, just as the breakaway is about to be caught he attacks again.
(small) Why can't there just be a fucking breakaway. Why do they have to reel Lund in, he's like 3 mins behind in overall

i.imgur.com/to4Z7HF.jpg

Once again the Peloton catches the breakaway, and once again several people attack immediately. Anders Lund looks broken, physically he is fine, but mentally he has given up on his thoughts on the breakaway. (De Backer and Soupe in the break)

Forgot to get pictures but Cantwell got 1st and 2nd in the two intermediate sprints.

i.imgur.com/4OCFHYN.jpg

22km to go and Anders Lund decides he is going to try one final time. He puts everything he can into this attack.

i.imgur.com/QhgZ54Q.jpg

No matter how hard he pushes he can't get a huge lead over the peloton. The other man in the break doesn't want to do any work so Lund pushes out a huge tempo by himself.

i.imgur.com/ibWKDIs.png

Lund can't hold the pace of the breakaway after putting so much effort in earlier. The message gets passed to Sorensen that Lund isn't keeping up so Sorensen tries his own luck.

i.imgur.com/3hsLTO8.jpg

Sorensens attack is unsucessful but the group ahead of the peloton makes it over the top in the lead. Is there a chance they can win the stage?

i.imgur.com/2GWZGGk.jpg

All of the team has nothing left, Cantwell has noone to lead him out so he finds himself locked onto the wheel of Von Hoff.

i.imgur.com/HTp8Tna.jpg

In the final sprint for the line none of our riders have anything left. Cantwell and Kump do well considering how tired they were but this day was not the best for Saxo - Tinkoff.
