The 2nd stage is pretty flat but with a length of 201km not the shortest. 2 intermediate sprints might make it interesting as several sprinters need every second to improve their position. The finish alone can`t help all of them.
Early on a group of 4 did create a 2'50 gap and seem to be allowed to go. This obviously will give those riders the intermediate seconds.
Lampaert
Portela
Rodriguez Oliver
Bush
Behind we see a mix of Die Berg Komt Er, MTN and Credexbank. So no sign of the best sprinter duo so far with Guillén/Steegmans.
The first sprint is reached and Portela takes it in a very close fight ahead of Bush and Rodriguez Oliver.
The sprinter teams completely stopped their effort and so it`s Die Berg Komt Er alone for race leader Flens. Plus they have great options for a possible sprint as well with Duque and Chavanel. Both did pretty well yesterday and could deliver good results here.
125km to go and the gap is up to 7min.
We make a bigger jump now as nothing really happened in between.
40km left, 12 until the 2nd sprint. And the peloton is just 1'24 behind, so it`s even possible that some of the sprinters will make it before the intermediate to gain some more time.
But actually the breakaway was stronger and even extended their lead to 1'45 at the sprint.
Rodriguez Oliver takes the 6s ahead of Portela and Lampaert.
The sprinters know, that they have to work more and so they send some helpers to the front.
Next to 3 red guys from the Credexbank squad we have one MTN helper. Still no work by Banco Nacional de Costa Rica.
But all effort was useless. With 9km to go Rodriguez is caught as last rider and the sprinter teams continue to prepare.
3 trains are forming and finally a sign of the top sprinters.
Siedler Slagter Uwimana Clarke Kopp Ben Youcef Kankovský Guillén Abdallah Dekkers Duque Gavazzi Giacoppo Lasca
We see most top sprinters here but where is Steegmans or Keough? Both aren`t in a good position even though they did so well yesterday.
Uwimana with a huge effort still leading under the 2km banner, while the other trains already lost their first rider. They are clearly the strongest train here and almost destroy the field.
1,6km and Abdallah still in a great position now behind Ben Youcef.
But the other sprinters have found their way back to the front.
And good for Steegmans, that he came out of nowwhere sitting behind Dekkers now. So does Chavanel in ~15th position.
But Ben Youcef is still going strong leading out Abdallah with less than 1k to go. Duque had a great position behind him, while Gavazzi is going as first on the right side.
500m to go and now Abdallah in the front.
Guillén went a bit late but is still ahead of Kankovský. On the right we have Duque, Gavazzi, a stron coming Steegmans and Chavanel.
Also to mention is Lasca, who had a good sprint so far.
Abdallah takes it. The Egypt had a perfect leadout and finished it. So he gained 20s back from his 39s loss yesterday.
A bit surprising Duque as 2nd, who makes a big jump into the top5 GC now. Even more surprising Hans Dekkers as 3rd. He was always behind Guillén (4th) and Kankovský (9th), but somehow found a way around them on the last meters.
Chavanel (5th) makes it a great team result as Flens also takes the overall lead.
Giacoppo (6th), Steegmans (7th), Lequatre (8th) and Lasca (10th) to complete the top10.
Biggest disappointments today are surely the two top sprinters Guillén and Kankovský who neither were able to podium today nor making any GC steps . Also Keough as 22nd was surely disappointing here.
Our 4 breakaway riders btw all lost 2'22 in the end, so their time gain at the intermediates did not help them GC wise.
