40 degrees, 70km and two climbs make for a tough opening mountain stage! Welcome to Lesotho, Africa, where the Tasol to the Sun Tour will be kicked off today!
Top-favorite Arroyo needs to deliver, finally. He's challenged by several less stronger climbers like Larsson, Menchov, Martinez or Perez Sanchez.
Nothing happened in the first flat 25km! No one even tried to attack: seems like the riders are just waiting for the road ascending!
Still no attack, so the first news in this race are bad news:
Parra Bustamante crashes on a tricky sector, close to the first HC-mountain!
Horrible news for the team, of course. The Columbian was expected to be the team's leader. Any chance to come back? At least the pace is still low thanks to the peloton having no reason to chase any breakaway.
Finally, attacks! 27km to go and 2 riders try to break clear from the peloton:
Adamou
Morton
So two decent climbers made their moves, time for the real action to begin! In the meantime, Parra Bustamante made it back into the bunch.
The two escapees establish a 1'20"-gap quickly. It looks like they are allowed to go - for now..
And they cross the first HC-rated climb with the same gap, we've only 21km to go. Here's how this KoM-sprint (Top-5) ended:
Name Pts Adamou20 Morton14 Calzati12 De la Cruz10 Gonzalo8
So as you may notice, FC Barcelona took responsibility of the pursuit back in the bunch..
Oh my! That's shocking news for HTC here: young gun Morton crashes with only 9km to go!
We couldn't see how this fall happened, but there's no spectator involved, that's for sure. Anyway, giving up the leading position in a two-men-break like that.. well, blame it on his youth or simply very tough luck!
So Adamou remains in a solo-breakaway! No more attacks so far, now as we already reached the final 4km!
Adamou holds on to a 1'08"-lead, the chasing bunch - with Barcelona and also Die Berg leading - is down to 39 riders by now.
We're still waiting for the first big moves..
The flamme rouge is already within sight and the chasing bunch narrows the gap slowly..
Vattenfall joines the two mentioned teams for the pursuit and some bigger names move forward..
..and here they go, some may say "finally!":
Arroyo is the first top-favorite to jump behind solo-escapee Adamou and he's followed by Moreno immediately!
More riders try to follow:
Ndbri
Larsson
Menchov
try to hang on, while Adamou already entered the final km with the gap decreasing..
Arroyo looks in shape and he takes the leading position with 500 metres to go! He also created a small gap on the following favorites, let's have a look:
Arroyo
Adamou
Moreno at 0.13
Menchov
Larsson
Ndbri at 0.28
22 riders (including)
Nieve
Rodas, Niyonshuti
Naibo
Martinez
Colorado
Eduardo Silva, Roman
Kronborg Ebsen, Dahlberg at 1.03
Only a few metres to go and Arroyo holds on to his gap!
Escapee Adamou faces some tough competition in Moreno and Menchov, who looks like strongest of the 3-men-group behind!
Arroyo finally delivers! He takes out the opening stage of this tour and it looks like he also gained some seconds in addition to the bonus.
Yes, 14 seconds behind Arroyo, Moreno and Menchov complete today's podium!
Escapee Adamou finishes still great as 4th, losing only 26" on Arroyo today!
Larsson 5th (+ 0.42), Ndbri (+ 0.50) limit the losses, finishing ahead of Nieve and Ebsen (+ 1.00).
Niyonshuti and Silva complete the Top-10, leading a group of six riders, mostly domestiques of the best teams here.
The crash-victims Bustamante (30th, + 3.08) and especially late-victim Morton (34th, + 5.08) lost minutes eventually.. bad luck.
