The stage is mostly flat, but a tricky hill towards the end pf the stage will shake things up and has earnt the stage a hilly rating.
Just the 2 breakaway riders today, Tiralongo and Rodrigues.
This meant that the sprinters could battle for 3rd in all of the 3 intermediate sprints, it will be interesting since both Freire and Bennati are tied on 130 points - so why Napolitano does the intermediate sprints for Flogas, I have no idea.
In the first battle for 3rd, Forero led out until he faded and was passed by Haedo. But then Haedo too faded and was passed by McEwen in the last few metres. The 2nd battle for 3rd was straightforward for Bennati, who now takes the lead in the points classification. The 3rd and final battle for 3rd looked to be an easy 'win' for Allan Davis, until Napolitano pipped him on the line.
The 2-man break was caught as the peleton approached the toughest section of the day.
And Vinokourov attacks first!
The Kazakh is well doped up today and is able to attack for an aazing 4.5km, by which time the damage is done and despite there being counter attacks, he has a 90 second lead over the next riders.
Gutierrez Catalana, Arroyo, Kloden, Fothen and Sanchez Gonzalez make up the first chase group. They are pursued by Dekker and Bruseghin, who themselves are being chased by Gesink and Mancebo.
Vinokourov takes the KoM points and is away for another win. The group behind him is led down the descent by Markus Fothen. He is looking to extend his lead over Dekker as the best young rider (Despite the fact that fothen is too old, Cya-logic allows him to battle for the jersey) and also take Mancebo's podium spot.
Its yet another victory for Vinokourov
Sanchez Gonzalez is a comfortable 2nd ahead of Gutierrez Cataluna, but he stopped sprinting meaning that he did not get a gap. Dekker catches the group in the sprint but Mancebo loses over a minute on them.
Danniele Bennati extends his new lead on the points jersey as he managed to keep in the peleton and lead them home in 11th. His rival Oscar Freire crashed in the descent in a crash that also took down sprinters Allan Davis and Edgardo Simon. Raivis Belohvosciks was forced to abandon, in the stage right before the first time trial, which is the Latvian's specialty.
